Establishing the minimal important difference of the visual analog scale for assessing exercise-induced fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced fatigue is a physiological state characterized by performance decline. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) is one of the most commonly used subjective methods for evaluating exercise-induced fatigue. However, there is a limited interpretation of how much a change in this method indicates a fatigue status that matters to the exercise performance due to the lack of a well-established minimal important difference (MID). METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of data from three trials. We analyzed individual participant data before and after exercise-induced fatigue. A

Clinically significant differences in the visual analog pain scale in acute vasoocclusive sickle cell crisis.

This study sought to determine the minimum clinically significant change in the visual analog scale (VAS) during the Emergency Department (ED) treatment of adult vasoocclusive sickle cell crisis (VOC). Sickle cell anemia patients presenting to the ED with their typical VOC pain had a 100 mm VAS administered prior to each of up to three standard analgesic injections administered as part of a treatment protocol. At each assessment, subjects were asked to describe their pain as "much better," a "little better," "the same," "a little worse," or "much worse." The change in the VAS (DeltaVAS) betwee

The reliability and validity of a visual analog scale for rating the single leg squat test.

BACKGROUND: The single leg squat test (SLST) is commonly used for visual movement assessment in subjects with lower extremity injuries. While current methods utilize ordinal rating categorization, adopting a visual analog scale (VAS) may offer potential advantages. The study aims to determine the intra-rater, inter-rater reliability, and validity of a visual analog scale (VAS) for rating the single leg squat test (SLST) in subjects with lower extremity injuries. METHODS: 58 subjects with lower extremity injuries participated. Intra-rater reliability was assessed by a physical therapist at 1-w

Modified facelift incision for partial parotidectomy versus bayonet-shaped incision: a comparison using visual analog scale.

The aim of this study is to show differences between a modified facelift incision (MFI) for partial parotidectomy versus a bayonet-shaped incision (BSI). 24 patients presenting with a parotid tumor were surgically treated with a partial parotidectomy using a MFI. We generated a "matched pair control group" regarding age, tumor size and gender, who received a BSI. A questionnaire was sent to all patients and relevant data reviewed. The cosmetic satisfaction on a VAS with a MFI was 9.74 (±0.47) compared to BSI with 7.63 (±2.44, p = 0.004). The scoring in the two subgroups "visible scar" and "peo

Effect of a distal weight-bearing implant on visual analog scale scores in 23 transfemoral amputees.

The objective of this interrupted time series clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of a distal weight-bearing implant on well-being in patients with transfemoral amputations using the visual analog scale (VAS). A total of 29 patients from five hospitals with previous transfemoral amputations were surgically implanted with an osseoanchored implant with a distal spacer that allows a direct load on the residuum over the distal surface of the socket. Patients were followed for a 14-month period and assessed presurgically and postsurgically using the VAS. The Wilcoxon test was used to evaluate

Assessment of the bronchodilation test by visual analog scale in the selection of patients with rhinitis for screening spirometry.

BACKGROUND: The nose and bronchi are closely linked, and rhinitis often precedes the onset of asthma. Bronchial obstruction is a characteristic of asthma, and demonstration of its reversibility is a key element in diagnosis. However, reversibility testing requires a spirometer, which is rarely available in the doctor's office. Visual analog scales (VAS) are frequently used in daily practice. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the suitability of a VAS for assessing bronchodilation in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis as a means of selecting candidates for screening spirometry. METHODS:

Validation of an Electronic Visual Analog Scale mHealth Tool for Acute Pain Assessment: Prospective Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of pain is required to improve its management and in research. The visual analog scale (VAS) on paper format has been shown to be an accurate, valid, reliable, and reproducible way to measure pain intensity. However, some limitations should be considered, some of which can be implemented with the introduction of an electronic VAS version, suitable to be used both in a tablet and a smartphone. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate a new method of recording pain level by comparing the traditional paper VAS with the pain level module on the newly designed Inter

Validation of a revised visual analog scale for premenstrual mood symptoms: results from prospective and retrospective trials.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have demonstrated that visual analog scales (VASs) are valid and reliable instruments for measuring the severity of premenstrual symptoms. Most of these studies, though, predate the introduction of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Our objective was to assess the reliability and validity of VASs that were revised to better reflect the DSM-IV definition of PMDD. METHODS: Concurrent information from the well-validated Premenstrual Tension Syndrome-Observer (PMTS-O) rating scale was used to evaluate the revised VASs. Data from 4 ra
