Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR2025eng
PURPOSE: The main aim of the systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of language interventions for school-aged children who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). We focused on studies targeting meaning-based aspects of language, such as vocabulary, grammar, and narrative skills. We included randomized controlled trials and quasi-experiments with a control group and a pre-post design. A secondary aim was to describe the characteristics of effective interventions identified in the systematic review.
METHOD: The review was preregistered in PROSPERO (ID CRD4202123608

General cognitive ability is still a factor in current definitions of dyslexia despite two decades of research showing little or no relevance to the nature of dyslexia. This article suggests one reason why this may be so. The suggestion is based on a distinction between dyslexia as a disability (poor ability)-as it is viewed and explained by psycholinguistic and neuropsychological research-and dyslexia seen as a handicap (the consequences of a poor ability) in the educational world. While general knowledge and ability may be irrelevant to the nature of dyslexia as a disability, general knowled

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disability (ID) have significantly delayed morphological and syntactic development. This study aimed to establish the link between vocabulary and syntactic development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Down syndrome (DS) compared with children with typical development (TD), controlling for mental age (MA) as defined by the Tanaka-Binet Intelligence Scale V.
METHODS: Participants comprised children with ID (N = 33), including 14 with ASD and 19 with DS; chronological age (CA) ranged from 9 to 17 years, with an MA of over 4 years. Childre

Background/Objectives: Receptive vocabulary is essential for children's language, academic, and cognitive development. While cochlear implants (CIs) help children with severe to profound hearing loss develop spoken language, their vocabulary skills often fall behind their typical hearing (TH) peers, although early implantation and auditory-verbal therapy (AVT) can help narrow this gap. Children with CIs and other developmental difficulties face additional challenges, but can still progress, with outcomes depending on the disabilities' type and severity. Limited research exists on Arabic-speaki

This 2-year longitudinal study sought to identify a developmental pattern of Chinese and English reading skills in children with and without dyslexia from 6 to 8years of age. Three groups of 15 children each-those with dyslexia, age-matched (AM) controls, and reading-matched (RM) controls-participated. Dyslexia was diagnosed at 8years of age. All children were tested on phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming (RAN), morphological awareness, word reading, and vocabulary knowledge in both Chinese and English and also speed of processing skill. AM controls outperformed the group with dys

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Emotional expression (i.e., identifying and labeling emotion using specific words), is theorized to reduce negative emotion and facilitate emotion regulation. However, it remains unclear how individuals with borderline personality disorder express emotion, and whether this influences their emotion regulation. This study examined whether: 1) emotional expression in borderline personality disorder differed from healthy controls based on word valence, emotionality, and vocabulary; and 2) whether such characteristics predict emotion regulation effectiveness across self-r

Williams syndrome (WS), a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, is of special interest to developmental psycholinguists because of its uneven linguistico-cognitive profile of abilities and deficits. One proficiency manifest in WS adolescents and adults is an unusually large vocabulary despite serious deficits in other domains. In this paper, rather than focus on vocabulary size, we explore the processes underlying vocabulary acquisition, i.e. how new words are learned. A WS group was compared to groups of normal MA-matched controls in the range 3-9 years in four different experiments testing for c

OBJECTIVES: To examine intelligence, language, and academic achievement through 18 years of age among children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection identified through hospital-based newborn screening who were asymptomatic at birth compared with uninfected infants.
METHODS: We used growth curve modeling to analyze trends in IQ (full-scale, verbal, and nonverbal intelligence), receptive and expressive vocabulary, and academic achievement in math and reading. Separate models were fit for each outcome, modeling the change in overall scores with increasing age for patients with normal hearing

A formal comparison of physician notes on HIV patients with MEDCIN was carried out. Terms from patient charts were divided into five groups: History, Physical Examination, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Doctor's Orders. Four types of matches were determined: Exact, Lexical, Semantic and No-Match. Across the five groups, exact matches ranged from 12 to 44 percent, lexical matches from 2 to 11 percent, semantic matches from 9 to 21 percent, and no-matches from 29 to 74 percent.

We examined how generalized and mathematics-specific language skills predicted the word-problem performance of students with mathematics difficulty. Participants were 325 third-grade students in the southwestern United States who performed at or below the 25th percentile on a word-problem measure. We assessed generalized language skills in word reading, passage comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. In addition, we measured mathematics-specific vocabulary knowledge. To explore variation within the mathematics-difficulty population, we utilized unconditional quantile regression to determine h

This study aimed to compare the development of pronunciation in South Korean preschoolers with unilateral cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) to that of age-matched preschoolers with normal hearing, a topic that has not been explored previously. In a retrospective analysis, 25 preschoolers with unilateral CND who had undergone a speech evaluation battery, including a pronunciation and vocabulary test, were enrolled. Utilizing the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonation and customized language ability tests, pronunciation and vocabulary were assessed. The subjects' speech evaluation scores were c

Purpose Learning spoken words can be challenging for children with hearing loss who communicate orally and who are known to have weaker oral vocabulary skills than age-matched children who hear. Since vocabulary skills play a crucial role in reading and literacy acquisition, and academic success, it is important to identify effective vocabulary acquisition strategies for children with hearing loss. The aim of this study was to examine whether the incidental presence of orthography can facilitate oral vocabulary learning in children with hearing loss and whether the benefits are greater than th

With the growing interest in integrating technology into language teaching, Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing learning experiences. However, there is limited research examining its impact on Chinese English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners' vocabulary learning and academic enjoyment. The study aims to explore how innovative teaching approaches, such as AR game-based learning, can enhance Chinese EFL learners' vocabulary acquisition and overall academic enjoyment. Two intact classes of 80 learners each from a large university in China were randomly assigne

OBJECTIVE: In the past, it was believed that unilateral hearing loss has a minimal impact on the speech and language development in children. However, several studies have suggested that some school-age children with unilateral hearing loss have learning impairments in language. In the present study, we first examined whether preschool-age children with unilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss (UHL) have delays in the development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence. In the follow-up study, we tested the children again after school admission. The objective of the present study was

Deaf children who acquire a signed language at home and at school prior to learning to read are a unique group of developing bilinguals. They are first-language users of a signed language (e.g., American Sign Language; ASL) and second-language users of the written form of the ambient spoken language (e.g., English). Because signed languages do not possess orthographies that are widely used, deaf readers typically read in their second language. This profile stands in contrast to hearing bilingual readers, who read in their first language and, sometimes, their second language. In studies of chil

BACKGROUND: In typical development, early reading is underpinned by language skills, like vocabulary and phonological awareness (PA), as well as taught skills like letter knowledge. Less is understood about how early reading develops in children with neurodevelopmental disorders who display specific profiles of linguistic strengths and weaknesses, such as Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS).
METHODS: Early reading, letter knowledge, rhyme matching, phoneme matching and receptive vocabulary were assessed in 26 children with DS and 26 children with WS between 4 and 8 years, as well as

This study aimed to analyze one of the critical components of inhibitory control-the ability to suppress interference-in deaf and hearing children and to investigate the mediating role of language skills in this central component of executive functions. To this end, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 40 deaf children with and without cochlear implants (CIs) and 21 hearing children age 7-10 years. The ability to suppress interference was assessed with the children's version of the Attentional Network Test (child-ANT), and language skills were assessed with a computerized version of th

The current deliberations on increasing access to English and the democratization of English in post-war Sri Lanka must extend to students with disabilities. Research evidence from speech and language therapy promotes the use of multi-sensory stimuli to advance the development of communication and language skills in children with intellectual disabilities. In this preliminary study, 3 local children's stories, together with relevant story-making activities, were offered to 7 children with intellectual disabilities in one special school across 12 lessons. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Throughout typical development, children prioritize different perceptual, social, and linguistic cues to learn words. The earliest acquired words are often those that are perceptually salient and highly imageable. Imageability, the ease in which a word evokes a mental image, is a strong predictor for word age of acquisition in typically developing (TD) children, independent of other lexicosemantic features such as word frequency. However, little is known about the effects of imageability in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who tend to have differences in linguis
