Voice disorders in mucosal leishmaniasis.

INTRODUCTION: Leishmaniasis is considered as one of the six most important infectious diseases because of its high detection coefficient and ability to produce deformities. In most cases, mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) occurs as a consequence of cutaneous leishmaniasis. If left untreated, mucosal lesions can leave sequelae, interfering in the swallowing, breathing, voice and speech processes and requiring rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical characteristics and voice quality of ML patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive transversal study was conducted in a cohort of ML pa

Voice disorders in the elderly.

A review of the literature clearly shows that connective tissue degeneration in the larynx, particularly of elastic and collagen fibers, is more prevalent in males than in females. Reinke's edema or polypoidal degeneration of vocal cords may or may not be more common in females. Whether or not the above statements are true, tissue atrophy causes a problem in males because the voice becomes higher pitched, weak or reedy, less masculine, whereas polypoidal change in the older female larynx results in a lower pitch, husky voice that would be acceptable in a male but makes the female voice more ma

Comparison of subjective assessment of voice disorders and objective voice measurement.

BACKGROUND: Apart from perceptual and acoustic parameters of a voice disorder, the patient's individual concerns are important because dysphonia can lead to relevant mental and physical stress. The purpose of our study was to analyze the relationship between patients' self-assessed concerns over different voice disorders and objective acoustic parameters of their voice. METHODS: The Voice Handicap Index 12 (VHI-12) and the Göttingen Hoarseness Diagram (GHD) were evaluated in 226 patients with voice disorders. Individual VHI-12 items were correlated with the parameters of acoustic sound analys

Voice disorders in teachers. A review.

INTRODUCTION: Voice disorders are very prevalent among teachers and consequences are serious. Although the literature is extensive, there are differences in the concepts and methodology related to voice problems; most studies are restricted to analyzing the responses of teachers to questionnaires and only a few studies include vocal assessments and videolaryngoscopic examinations to obtain a definitive diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To review demographic studies related to vocal disorders in teachers to analyze the diverse methodologies, the prevalence rates pointed out by the authors, the main risk f

[Psychological classification of functional voice disorders].

In an explorative study the classification of a collective of patients with different voice disorders by discriminant and cluster analysis was tried. 21 variables, obtained from 128 patients with various diagnoses of voice disorders, were used. A first discriminant analysis on the basis of diagnoses-groups permitted no differentiation. A subsequent hierarchical cluster analysis indicated a four-cluster-solution. The clusters showed only little association with the phoniatric diagnoses. Cluster 1 is characterized by patients with non-organic voice disorders. Cluster 2 is marked by emotional uns

The pharmacological treatment of voice disorders.

The increasing diversity of purpose-built, synthetic and biogenetically engineered pharmaceuticals has led to a revival of interest in the pharmacological possibilities for the treatment of voice disorders. Where dysphonias arise as a part of a pathophysiological process, the pharmacological treatment of either the pathology or its associated symptoms may improve dysphonic voicing patterns. The treatment of symptoms such as cough and vocal fatigue are discussed together with treatment of allergic and other causes of inflammation or stiffening of the vocal tract. The pharmacological logical tre

Voice Disorders in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder. Case reports and small-scale survey studies report varied laryngeal deficits in patients with EDS, including arytenoid prolapse and vocal fold hypermobility. However, data on specific voice-related symptomology as well as social and functional voice-related limitations in EDS are lacking. Our study delineated specific voice symptomology of EDS and the impact of dysphonia on quality of life. METHOD: Participants with a diagnosis of EDS, between the ages of 18 and 89 years, completed an online questionnaire that collected de

Occupational risk factors and voice disorders.

From the point of view of occupational health, the field of voice disorders is very poorly developed as compared, for instance, to the prevention and diagnostics of occupational hearing disorders. In fact, voice disorders have not even been recognized in the field of occupational medicine. Hence, it is obviously very rare in most countries that the voice disorder of a professional voice user, e.g. a teacher, a singer or an actor, is accepted as an occupational disease by insurance companies. However, occupational voice problems do not lack significance from the point of view of the patient. We

Can Resident Auditory-Perceptual Voice Assessments Predict Medical Urgency of Voice Disorders?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Growing reliance on telemedicine has created new triaging challenges. This study investigated how effectively otolaryngology resident auditory-perceptual voice assessments performed via telemedicine determined the need for urgent in-person clinic visits. METHODS: Twelve otolaryngology resident physicians (PGY1-PGY5) performed auditory-perceptual assessments on 25 voice samples recorded during initial voice evaluations. Voice samples were balanced in severity and taken in equal numbers from patients with the following diagnoses: benign laryngeal lesions, laryngeal cancer
