Influence of the Voice Sample Length in Perceptual and Acoustic Voice Quality Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the variations that different voice sample length (VSL) has on the perceived degree of voice quality deviation and on the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) accuracy. METHODS: Voices of 71 subjects (53 dysphonic; 18 vocally health) were recorded: numbers 1-20 (42 syllables) + vowel/a/. Three different VSL were edited: VSL_long, 1-20 + 3 seconds vowel/a/; VSL_cust, customized length, were voiced-segments of the continuous speech had the same length of the vowel (mean = 18.73 syllables corresponding to 3 seconds of only-voiced segments) + 3 seconds vowel/a/; VSL_short, 1-

Interactive Augmentation of Voice Quality and Reduction of Breath Airflow in the Soprano Voice.

In 1985, at a conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, Martin Rothenberg first described a form of nonlinear source-tract acoustic interaction mechanism by which some sopranos, singing in their high range, can use to reduce the total airflow, to allow holding the note longer, and simultaneously enrich the quality of the voice, without straining the voice. (M. Rothenberg, "Source-Tract Acoustic Interaction in the Soprano Voice and Implications for Vocal Efficiency," Fourth International Conference on Vocal Fold Physiology, New Haven, Connecticut, June 3-6, 1985.) Aerodynamics, voice quality, and laryngeal image analysis of normal and pathologic voices.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe examinations of phonatory function and their relation to image analysis of the unilaterally immobile larynx. Special emphasis was placed on image analysis using three-dimensional endoscopic images produced from CT scans. RECENT FINDINGS: Developments in modern image processing technique have led to the quantification of various aspects of vocal fold vibration. Stroboscopic images of the vocal fold were digitized and, subsequently, the glottal gap area, amplitude, and degree of bowing were analyzed quantitatively in relation to phona

[The Evaluation of Voice Quality via Signal Typing in Voice using Narrowband Spectrograms].

OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, voice quality is evaluated by auditory-perceptual judgment but objective-acoustic analyses are also valid tools. Spectrography is a part of objective-acoustic analyses and is used since around 50 years. Recently, Sprecher et al. (2010) designed a new classification scheme for signal typing in voice using narrowband spectrograms. The present study aimed to explore the external validation between these 2 methods in a larger dataset. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total 300 voice samples were used based on the vowel [a:], in which n=270 had various degrees of dysphonia and n

Voice handicap index and voice-related quality of life in small laryngeal carcinoma.

Laryngeal cancer can affect the patients' voice. For assessment of the patients' self-perception of their voice, several tools were introduced into clinical routine. The voice handicap index questionnaire (VHI) is regarded as the "gold standard". However, in benign laryngeal pathologies and in functional dysphonia, the shorter voice-related quality of life questionnaire (V-RQOL) proved to be equivalent. This study examines the correlation of both questionnaires in patients who had been treated for small (T1 and T2) laryngeal cancer. It was performed during regular outclinic examinations. In to

The Acoustic Voice Quality Index: toward improved treatment outcomes assessment in voice disorders.

UNLABELLED: Voice practitioners require an objective index of dysphonia severity as a means to reliably track treatment outcomes. To ensure ecological validity however, such a measure should survey both sustained vowels and continuous speech. In an earlier study, a multivariate acoustic model referred to as the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), consisting of a weighted combination of 6 time-, frequency- and quefrency-domain metrics, was developed to measure dysphonia severity in both speaking tasks. In the current investigation, the generalizability and clinical utility of the AVQI are eval

Screening Voice Disorders: Acoustic Voice Quality Index, Cepstral Peak Prominence, and Machine Learning.

INTRODUCTION: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and Smoothed Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPPs) have been reported to effectively support the assessment of voice quality in persons seeking voice care across many languages. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of these two measures in detecting voice disorders in American English speakers, comparing their performance to machine learning (ML) models. METHODS: This retrospective study included a cohort of 187 participants: 138 patients with clinically diagnosed voice disorders and 49 vocally healthy individuals. Each participa

The relationship between ratings of voice quality and quality of life measures.

In the past several years, a number of scales have been developed that elicit a patient's self-assessment of the severity of his or her voice problem. The Voice Related Quality of Life Measure (V-RQOL) assesses a patient's perception of the impact of the voice problem on quality of life. Although this tool assesses the patient's perception of the voice disorder, it may not reflect the severity of dysphonia as perceived by a clinician. The GRBAS is an auditory-perceptual scale developed in Japan and used by clinicians to categorize the voice using five descriptive perceptual parameters: overall

Effects on Voice Quality of Thyroidectomy: A Qualitative and Quantitative Study Using Voice Maps.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the effects of thyroidectomy-a surgical intervention involving the removal of the thyroid gland-on voice quality, as represented by acoustic and electroglottographic measures. Given the thyroid gland's proximity to the inferior and superior laryngeal nerves, thyroidectomy carries a potential risk of affecting vocal function. While earlier studies have documented effects on the voice range, few studies have looked at voice quality after thyroidectomy. Since voice quality effects could manifest in many ways, that a priori are unknown, we wish to apply an ex

The Minimal Important Difference of Acoustic Voice Quality Index in the Treatment of Voice Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The acoustic voice quality index (AVQI) is a reliable tool that objectively assesses dysphonia levels using six acoustic parameters. Despite its high criterion-related concurrent validity, diagnostic accuracy, and minimal detectable change derived from test-retest reliability, the minimal important difference (MID) of the AVQI has not been tested before. This study aimed to estimate the MIDs of AVQI for improvement audibly perceived by clinicians and self-reported improvement by patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 110 patients who received treatment for voice

The Acoustic Voice Quality Index, Version 03.01, in French and the Voice Handicap Index.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), version 03.01, is a tool for quantitative assessment of the overall severity of dysphonia. Its computation includes six acoustic parameters, which are all analyzed with Praat freeware. It is based on recordings of a sustained vowel and part of a text read aloud. The psychometric qualities of this tool in various languages, including French, have been confirmed by numerous publications. However, studies investigating the correlation between tools for objective vocal assessment and voice-related quality of life show inconsistent results. Hence

Identifying a comparison for matching rough voice quality.

PURPOSE: Perceptual estimates of voice quality obtained using rating scales are subject to contextual biases that influence how individuals assign numbers to estimate the magnitude of vocal quality. Because rating scales are commonly used in clinical settings, assessments of voice quality are also subject to the limitations of these scales. Instead, a matching task can be used to obtain objective measures of voice quality, thereby facilitating model development and tools for clinical use. METHOD: Twenty-seven individuals participated in a rating task or at least 1 of 3 matching tests (named a
