Understanding the mechanisms of familiar voice-identity recognition in the human brain.

Humans have a remarkable skill for voice-identity recognition: most of us can remember many voices that surround us as 'unique'. In this review, we explore the computational and neural mechanisms which may support our ability to represent and recognise a unique voice-identity. We examine the functional architecture of voice-sensitive regions in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus, and bring together findings on how these regions may interact with each other, and additional face-sensitive regions, to support voice-identity processing. We also contrast findings from studies on neurotypicals and c

Pattern recognition in muscle misuse voice disorders: how I do it.

The diagnosis of the patient with a muscle misuse voice disorder can be a complex process. The dysphonia is usually caused by problems stemming from a number of interacting factors that may include habitual vocal technique and postural use, vocal behavior, emotion, manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux, neuromuscular abnormalities, and associated organic mucosal disease. Sorting out the relative importance of the various factors is the first step towards planning an effective treatment program. This article addresses the difficulties caused by trying to classify dysphonia too rigidly, and

[A case suspected of Alzheimer type dementia showing multimodal (face and voice) person recognition disorder from face and voice].

A 90-year-old woman presented with a multimodal (face and voice) person recognition disorder. Although she had moderate general cognitive impairment, her visual cognitive capacity, other than face recognition, was well preserved. She could identify the faces and voices of family members but could not recall the names and voices of relatives whom she met infrequently, famous individuals, or the medical staff. She could remember the first names and some information about prominent individuals when supplied with their surnames. Therefore, we thought that her person-specific semantic memory was in

Project planning, training, measurement and sustainment: the successful implementation of voice recognition.

Computerized voice recognition systems (VR) can reduce costs and enhance service. The capital outlay required for conversion to a VR system is significant; therefore, it is incumbent on radiology departments to provide cost and service justifications to administrators. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston implemented VR over a two-year period and achieved annual savings of $530,000 and a 50% decrease in report throughput. Those accomplishments required solid planning and implementation strategies, training and sustainment programs. This article walks through the process, step by step

A vision-based sign language recognition & voice conversion system for inclusive communication.

Major communication barriers are often encountered among deaf and/or speech-impaired people, which is particularly serious during emergencies. This study proposes a novel vision-based sign-to-voice conversion that recognizes hand gestures through a convolutional neural network incorporated with advanced preprocessing and transformer-based classification. A custom gesture dataset was created by capturing labeled images and video frames under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, and hand orientations for proper training. Skin filtering, background subtraction, noise removal, and extractio

Visual mechanisms for voice-identity recognition flexibly adjust to auditory noise level.

Recognising the identity of voices is a key ingredient of communication. Visual mechanisms support this ability: recognition is better for voices previously learned with their corresponding face (compared to a control condition). This so-called 'face-benefit' is supported by the fusiform face area (FFA), a region sensitive to facial form and identity. Behavioural findings indicate that the face-benefit increases in noisy listening conditions. The neural mechanisms for this increase are unknown. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined responses in face-sensitive regions w

The Right Temporal Lobe and the Enhancement of Voice Recognition in Congenitally Blind Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Experimental investigations and clinical observations have shown that not only faces but also voices are predominantly processed by the right hemisphere. Moreover, right brain-damaged patients show more difficulties with voice than with face recognition. Finally, healthy subjects undergoing right temporal anodal stimulation improve their voice but not their face recognition. This asymmetry between face and voice recognition in the right hemisphere could be due to the greater complexity of voice processing. METHODS: To further investigate this issue, we tested voice and name recogn

Activation in the angular gyrus and in the pSTS is modulated by face primes during voice recognition.

The aim of the present study was to better understand the interaction of face and voice processing when identifying people. In a S1-S2 crossmodal priming fMRI experiment, the target (S2) was a disyllabic voice stimulus, whereas the modality of the prime (S1) was manipulated blockwise and consisted of the silent video of a speaking face in the crossmodal condition or of a voice stimulus in the unimodal condition. Primes and targets were from the same speaker (person-congruent) or from two different speakers (person-incongruent). Participants had to classify the S2 as either an old or a young pe

Voice Analysis for Neurological Disorder Recognition-A Systematic Review and Perspective on Emerging Trends.

Quantifying neurological disorders from voice is a rapidly growing field of research and holds promise for unobtrusive and large-scale disorder monitoring. The data recording setup and data analysis pipelines are both crucial aspects to effectively obtain relevant information from participants. Therefore, we performed a systematic review to provide a high-level overview of practices across various neurological disorders and highlight emerging trends. PRISMA-based literature searches were conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore to identify publications in which original (i.e.,

What the study of voice recognition in normal subjects and brain-damaged patients tells us about models of familiar people recognition.

In recent years it has been shown that a disorder in recognizing familiar people can be observed in patients with lesions affecting the anterior parts of the temporal lobes and that these disorders can be multi-modal, simultaneously affecting the visual, auditory and linguistic channels that allow person identification. Several authors have also shown that patients with right anterior temporal atrophy are more impaired in assessing familiarity and in retrieving person-specific semantic information from faces than from names, whereas the opposite pattern of performance can be observed in patien

Deep Learning Application for Vocal Fold Disease Prediction Through Voice Recognition: Preliminary Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphonia influences the quality of life by interfering with communication. However, a laryngoscopic examination is expensive and not readily accessible in primary care units. Experienced laryngologists are required to achieve an accurate diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to detect various vocal fold diseases through pathological voice recognition using artificial intelligence. METHODS: We collected 189 normal voice samples and 552 samples of individuals with voice disorders, including vocal atrophy (n=224), unilateral vocal paralysis (n=50), organic vocal fold lesions (n=2

Using voice-recognition technology to eliminate cardiac cycle segmentation in automated heart sound diagnosis.

Advanced digital signal processing has the potential to revolutionize the stethoscope through the use of mathematical algorithms to interpret heart sound acoustic information. In this study, a novel classification algorithm that does not require cardiac cycle segmentation was used for identifying differences between normal and diseased heart sounds. The heart sound signals were not separated into systole and diastole. A recordable electronic stethoscope was used to record the heart sounds of 163 echocardiogram patients. Mel-cepstrum and Principal Components Analysis were applied to the 60 reco

Acoustic recognition of voice disorders: a comparative study of running speech versus sustained vowels.

The signals of running speech and sustained vowels of normals and subjects suffering from dysphonia were analyzed statistically with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The distribution of the SNR measured in multiple overlapping frames in the speech signal was described by a linear combination of the distribution frequencies for SNR = 0 dB, 0 dB less than SNR less than 15 dB, and SNR greater than or equal to 15 dB. The values of the linear combination, the SNR of the vowels, and clinical assignment of the voices to normal and pathologic populations based on laryngoscopic and strobosco

Improved hand prostheses control for transradial amputees based on hybrid of voice recognition and electromyography.

The control of prostheses and their complexities is one of the greatest challenges limiting wide amputees' use of upper limb prostheses. The main challenges include the difficulty of extracting signals for controlling the prostheses, limited number of degrees of freedom (DoF), and cost-prohibitive for complex controlling systems. In this study, a real-time hybrid control system, based on electromyography (EMG) and voice commands (VC) is designed to render the prosthesis more dexterous with the ability to accomplish amputee's daily activities proficiently. The voice and EMG systems were combine

Surface Potential Tuned Single Active Material Comprised Triboelectric Nanogenerator for a High Performance Voice Recognition Sensor.

To fabricate a high-performance and ultrasensitive triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), choice of a combination of different materials of triboelectric series is one of the prime challenging tasks. An effective way to fabricate a TENG with a single material (abbreviated as S-TENG) is proposed, comprising electrospun nylon nanofibers. The surface potential of the nanofibers are tuned by changing the voltage polarity in the electrospinning setup, employed between the needle and collector. The difference in surface potential leads to a different work function that is the key to design S-TENG with

Defective recognition and naming of famous people from voice in patients with unilateral temporal lobe tumours.

Twenty-nine patients who underwent surgery for a temporal glioma, either in the left (16 patients) or right (13 patients) hemisphere, were administered standardized tests of unknown voice discrimination (UVD) and of famous voice recognition (VO-REC), which included tasks of familiarity evaluation, semantic identification and naming of famous voices. The UVD consisted of twenty stimuli, in which two audio files were consecutively presented; the subject was requested to judge whether the voices belonged to the same or different persons. In the VO-REC, patients were requested to recognize the voi

Recognition disorders for famous faces and voices: a review of the literature and normative data of a new test battery.

Several anatomo-clinical investigations have shown that familiar face recognition disorders not due to high level perceptual defects are often observed in patients with lesions of the right anterior temporal lobe (ATL). The meaning of these findings is, however, controversial, because some authors claim that these patients show pure instances of modality-specific 'associative prosopagnosia', whereas other authors maintain that in these patients voice recognition is also impaired and that these patients have a 'multimodal person recognition disorder'. To solve the problem of the nature of famou

The Cambridge Mindreading (CAM) Face-Voice Battery: Testing complex emotion recognition in adults with and without Asperger syndrome.

Adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) can recognise simple emotions and pass basic theory of mind tasks, but have difficulties recognising more complex emotions and mental states. This study describes a new battery of tasks, testing recognition of 20 complex emotions and mental states from faces and voices. The battery was given to males and females with AS and matched controls. Results showed the AS group performed worse than controls overall, on emotion recognition from faces and voices and on 12/20 specific emotions. Females recognised faces better than males regardless of diagnosis, and males

Which components of famous people recognition are lateralized? A study of face, voice and name recognition disorders in patients with neoplastic or degenerative damage of the right or left anterior temporal lobes.

We administered to large groups of patients with neoplastic or degenerative damage affecting the right or left ATL, the 'Famous People Recognition Battery' (FPRB), in which subjects are required to recognize the same 40 famous people through their faces, voices and names, to clarify which components of famous people recognition are lateralized. At the familiarity level, we found, as expected, a dissociation between a greater impairment of patients with right ATL lesions on the non-verbal (face and voice) recognition modalities and of those with left ATL lesions on name familiarity.
