INTRODUCTION: Morbid obesity is associated with alterations in the ability to walk, however, the behavior of the 6-minute walk test in subjects with increases in body mass index is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the behavior of the 6-minute walk test in subjects with normal body mass index to morbid obesity.
METHODS: Through an analytical cross-sectional design, subjects of both genders from 18 to 60 years old with body mass index were studied: Normal (BMI:18.5-24.9); overweight (BMI:25-29.9); obesity (BMI:30-39.9); morbid obesity (BMI:>40) kg/m2. A 6-minute walk test was performed, demogra

The 6-min walk test (6MWT) is a commonly used test for the objective assessment of functional exercise capacity for the management of patients with moderate-to-severe pulmonary disease. Unlike pulmonary function testing, the 6MWT captures the often coexisting extrapulmonary manifestations of chronic respiratory disease, including cardiovascular disease, frailty, sarcopenia, and cancer. In contrast with cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing, this test does not require complex equipment or technical expertise. In this low complexity, safe test, the patient is asked to walk as far as possible a

OBJECTIVE: Two walking tests including the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) are widely used to evaluate functional ability in individuals with disease conditions. However, it remains unclear whether these walking tests effectively manifest clinical impairment in individuals with asymptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD). We aimed (i) to compare the walking performance of individuals with and without asymptomatic PAD using the 6MWT and ISWT, and (ii) to investigate the correlation between ankle-brachial index and toe-brachial index (ABI-TBI) and the wa

Two hundred and fifteen patients were diagnosed and treated for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the horizontal canal (BPPV-HC). All patients were tested with conventional positional nystagmus tests lying supine and rotating head for geotropic nystagmus, registered with Frenzels glasses, and in 109 cases with ENG. The walk-rotate-walk (WRW) test, developed by one of us (T.R.) and described in the text, was applied to all patients. The immediate good treatment results with Lempert's maneuver verify the correct diagnosis of BPPV-HC. The WRW test is a more sensitive test for BPPV-HC than e

AIM: To determine the baseline pediatric reference values of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) distance (6MWD) across spina bifida functional lesion levels, the associations between the 6MWD and the distances of the 1-minute and 2-minute walk tests, and assess the impact of social determinants on the 6MWD.
METHOD: This prospective cohort study collected the 6MWD of 145 ambulatory children (72 male, 73 female; mean age = 11 years 2 months [range: 6 years 0 months-17 years 11 months]) with mid-lumbar-level (n = 59), low-lumbar-level (n = 28), and sacral-level (n = 58) myelomeningocele at a pediatri

This investigation evaluated the reliability and validity of the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) in patients with pediatric hypophosphatasia (HPP). Children (aged 6 to 12 years; n = 11), adolescents (13 to 17 years; n = 4), and adults (18 to 65 years; n = 9) completed the 6MWT at screening and baseline in two clinical studies of asfotase alfa. Test-retest reliability of the 6MWT, evaluated with Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) for screening versus baseline, was high for children (r = 0.95; p < 0.0001), adolescents (r = 0.81; p = 0.125), and adults (r = 0.94; p = 0.0001). The most conservative

BACKGROUND: In spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), weakness, decreased endurance, and fatigue limit mobility. Scales have been developed to measure function across the wide spectrum of disease severity. However, these scales typically are observer dependent, and scores are based on sums across Likert-scaled items. The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is an objective, easily administered, and standardized evaluation of functional exercise capacity that has been proven reliable in other neurologic disorders and in children.
METHODS: To study the performance of the 6MWT in SMA, 18 ambulatory participants

The maximum distance achieved on a modified 12 min walk test (12MWT) is a well-established measure in McArdle disease glycogen storage disease type V (GSDV). Age, height, body mass and gender are known predictors of walking distance in other patient groups. Reference values to correct for these predictors are necessary for comparisons between individuals. To date, there has not been a systematic investigation of these predictors in the 12MWT in GSDV. This study explores the contribution of these predictors on distance achieved in GSDV. Data, included maximum distance walked, age, gender, heigh

INTRODUCTION: Exercise capacity is impaired in patients with bronchiectasis. Incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) stresses cardiorespiratory system physiologically to symptom-limited maximal exercise capacity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical determinants of ISWT in adults with non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis.
METHODS: Forty-one clinically stable bronchiectasis patients aged 18-72 years (27 females, 14 males) participated in the study. Subjects' demographics and physical characteristics were recorded. Bronchiectasis Severity Index was used to identify disease

In many pacemaker patients bicycle and treadmill ergometry are not practicable. As an alternative, we performed a 6-minute walk on a 20-m corridor in 97 pacemaker patients, who were asked to walk as far as possible determining their speed by themselves. Results were compared with those of bicycle ergometry in 42 of these patients and with treadmill exercise of a group of 92 other pacemaker patients. In the 6-minute walk, performance and maximal heart rate were slightly lower (49 +/- 18 W; 96 +/- 23 beats/min) than in bicycle (57 +/- 16 W; 110 +/- 26 beats/min) and treadmill ergometry (50 +/- 3

BACKGROUND: Assessing and interpreting walking capacity in persons with Multiple sclerosis (PwMS) is essential in clinical practice and research - and thus for PwMS themselves - yet research evaluating cut-points is limited. The present study aims to establish cut-points for 6-min walk test (6MWT), six spot step test (SSST), and timed 25-foot walk test (T25FWT) in PwMS.
METHODS: Classification of PwMS having walking impairments and PwMS having limited or no walking impairments was based on distinct benchmarks for each walking test, as derived from the 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale

BACKGROUND: Acquiring 6-min walk test (6MWT) data from patients undergoing noninvasive mechanical ventilation due to chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure is limited. We aimed to assess whether the actual 6-min walk distance (6MWD) or the percent predicted 6MWD is a better reflection of the respiratory function of patients using home noninvasive ventilation (NIV) due to chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional observational study. The 6MWT was performed in subjects using home NIV. Diagnoses were grouped as COPD, obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), kyp

Although correlated to peak oxygen uptake (VO2), the six-minute walk test (6MWT) alone cannot provide precise physiological insight regarding the specific cause(s) of exercise limitations. We aimed to analyze whether 6MWT is able to properly detect differences in the cardiorespiratory responses between patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) and those with ischemic cardiomyopathy (IC) and determine whether the degree of abnormality in ejection fraction is related with impaired submaximal exercise capacity. Twenty-two subjects with SCAD and 19 subjects with IC underwent a 6MWT while

INTRODUCTION: The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is a well-established clinical assessment of functional endurance, validated as a measure of walking ability in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The current availability of disease-modifying therapies for SMA indicates a growing need for normative reference data to compare SMA patients with healthy controls.
METHODS: The literature was searched in two scientific databases. Studies were evaluated and selected based on adherence to American Thoracic Society guidelines for administering the 6MWT. Reference equations from the selected studies were applied
