Baby walker injuries.

BACKGROUND: Baby walkers (BWs) are still commonly used. The resultant injuries are largely preventable. Understanding the reasons for their use and the circumstances leading to these accidents might lead to prevention. OBJECTIVES: To study the reasons for using BWs, how accidents occur, types of injury and their management. METHODS: Mothers of 100 children were interviewed while admitted or in the emergency room. The questionnaire included reasons for BW use, predisposing circumstances and types of injury sustained. RESULTS: BWs were used by 83% of the children (44% girls, 39% boys), starti

Walker-Warburg syndrome.

The Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by lissencephaly, cerebellar and retinal malformations, and congenital muscular dystrophy. We report a new case of WWS identified with the aid of cranial MR and briefly review the radiologic findings of this lethal syndrome.

[Dandy-Walker syndrome].

Two cases of this syndrome occurring in children aged 1.5 and 3 years are reported. In one case, no other abnormalities were present, and the deformity did not manifest itself clinically before the child had fallen from a height. In the other, a cyst of the fourth ventricle coexisted with other abnormalities in the brain which were responsible for neurologic symptoms from the very birth and also, probably, for the atresia of draining orifices.

Emergent population dynamics of random walkers with cooperative reproduction and spatial selection.

We extend the N branching Brownian motions model of population invasion to higher-order asexual reproduction. Increasing reproduction order leads to qualitative changes: Invasion fronts generically cease to exist beyond binary reproduction, and in the binary case itself, their speed becomes diffusion independent. Ternary reproduction shows critical behavior, with collapse into a strongly localized "invasion bullet" in the supercritical regime, diffusive spreading in the subcritical regime, and a continuous family of fronts at criticality. These results suggest that the dominance of division an

Sensing interfaces for human-robot interaction: a scoping review for robotic walkers.

Purpose: This scoping review examines sensing interfaces for human-robot interaction in robotic walkers in response to the growing demand for advanced assistive technologies. Although research on robotic walkers has expanded significantly, existing reviews often position these systems within broader categories of walking-assist robots or emphasise mechanical and control aspects, providing limited synthesis on how sensing interfaces mediate interaction between the user, the robot and the environment. Materials and Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-

Reimagining Assistive Walkers: An Exploration of Challenges and Preferences in Older Adults.

The well-being of older adults relies significantly on maintaining balance and mobility. As physical ability declines, older adults often accept the need for assistive devices. However, existing walkers frequently fail to consider user preferences, leading to perceptions of imposition and reduced acceptance. This research explores the challenges faced by older adults, caregivers, and healthcare professionals when using walkers, assesses their perceptions, and identifies their needs and preferences. A holistic approach was employed, using tailored perception questionnaires for older adults (24

The sonographic diagnosis of Dandy-Walker and Dandy-Walker variant: associated findings and outcomes.

Outcomes of pregnancies with sonographically diagnosed Dandy-Walker (DW) or Dandy-Walker variant (DWV) syndromes vary widely. We examined our own experience with these diagnoses in an effort to identify those sonographic features that best predicted neonatal outcome. We identified 50 fetuses with DW and 49 with DWV diagnosed sonographically. Eighty-six per cent of fetuses with DW and 85% of fetuses with DWV had other sonographically identifiable anomalies, the most common being ventriculomegaly (DW: 32%; DWV: 27%) and cardiac defects (DW:38%; DWV: 41%). Forty-six per cent and 36% of available

Analysis of lower limb work-energy patterns in world-class race walkers.

The aim of this study was to analyse lower limb work patterns in world-class race walkers. Seventeen male and female athletes race walked at competitive pace. Ground reaction forces (1000 Hz) and high-speed videos (100 Hz) were recorded and normalised joint moments, work and power, stride length, stride frequency and speed estimated. The hip flexors and extensors were the main generators of energy (24.5 J (±6.9) and 40.3 J (±8.3), respectively), with the ankle plantarflexors (16.3 J (±4.3)) contributing to the energy generated during late stance. The knee generated little energy but performed

Safety in numbers in Australia: more walkers and bicyclists, safer walking and bicycling.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Overseas research shows that fatality and injury risks per cyclist and pedestrian are lower when there are more cyclists and pedestrians. Do Australian data follow the same exponential 'growth rule' where (Injuries)/(Amount of cycling) is proportional to ((Amount of cycling)-0.6)? METHOD: Fatality and injury risks were compared using three datasets: 1) fatalities and amounts of cycling in Australian States in the 1980s; 2) fatality and injury rates over time in Western Australia as cycling levels increased; and 3) deaths, serious head injuries and other serious injuries to cy

Cortical regions for judgments of emotions and personality traits from point-light walkers.

Humans are able to use nonverbal behavior to make fast, reliable judgments of both emotional states and personality traits. Whereas a sizeable body of research has identified neural structures critical for emotion recognition, the neural substrates of personality trait attribution have not been explored in detail. In the present study, we investigated the neural systems involved in emotion and personality trait judgments. We used a type of visual stimulus that is known to convey both emotion and personality information, namely, point-light walkers. We compared the emotion and personality trait

Surgical treatment for idiopathic toe walkers gives good biomechanical and patient satisfaction outcomes.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of bilateral surgical calf lengthening in patients with idiopathic toe walking (ITW) and calf contracture, including those with an autism diagnosis. METHODS: Clinical assessment included passive range of motion and 3D gait analysis to capture kinematic and kinetic data. Temporal spatial parameters were measured. Gait Profile Scores (GPS) were calculated to evaluate gait normalcy, and Gait Variable Scores (GVS) identified the components of any change. Ankle push-off power was analysed. Patient satisfaction was assessed via questionnaires. Statistical analysis incl

No Influence of Mechatronic Poles on the Movement Pattern of Professional Nordic Walkers.

This study compared selected temporal and kinematic parameters of normal gait and Nordic Walking (NW) performed with classic and mechatronic poles (classic poles equipped with sensors). It was assumed that equipping NW poles with sensors for biomechanical gait analysis would not impair the NW walking technique. Six professional NW instructors and athletes, including three women, participated in the study. The MyoMotion MR3 motion analysis system was used to collect gait kinematic variables. The subject's task was to cover a 100-m distance with three types of gait: a gait without poles, a gait

New walkers with Down syndrome use cautious but effective strategies for crossing obstacles.

Perception of affordances research in children with developmental disabilities has only examined well practiced skills. Ten toddlers with Down syndrome and 10 with typical development walked across a GAITRite mat, with and without an obstacle. We coded the toddlers' behaviors after 1 and 3 months of walking experience when they encountered the obstacle (avoid, crawl, error and walk successfully) and calculated gait parameters (step length, width, and velocity). Both groups actively explored their affordances. Despite similar decreases in step length and velocity when approaching the obstacle,

Retinoblastoma in Dandy-Walker Syndrome.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS), also referred to as Dandy-Walker malformation, is a rare congenital developmental anomaly characterized by enlargement of the posterior fossa, dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and cerebellar hypoplasia with upward rotation. Retinoblastoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in children and typically presents in the pediatric age group, with leukocoria and strabismus being common early signs. Although DWS and retinoblastoma are individually rare, their simultaneous occurrence is exceptionally uncommon. The etiologies of both disorders have been link

A walker used as a lifting device.

PURPOSE: To develop assistive technology that would help an older person to arise from a kneeling position to a standing one. METHODS: Developing a prototype, based on an inclusive design and then testing the prototype to verify the approach. The prototype was subsequently tested by a panel of 20 elderly users. These tests were observed and filmed. Participants' experiences of being lifted with the elevation seat were registered with the VIDAR ergonomic assessment system. RESULT: None of the 20 participants used a walker at that time. In response to a question of whether, assuming they might

Hydrocephalus in Dandy-Walker malformation.

INTRODUCTION: Even if the first description of Dandy-Walker dates back 1887, difficulty in the establishment of correct diagnosis, especially concerning differential diagnosis with other types of posterior fossa CSF collection, still persists. Further confusion is added by the inclusion, in some classification, of different malformations with different prognosis and therapeutic strategy under the same label of "Dandy-Walker". METHODS: An extensive literature review concerning embryologic, etiologic, pathogenetic, clinical and neuroradiological aspects has been performed. Therapeutic options,

[Focus on Dandy-Walker malformation].

The aim of this review is to summarize our knowledge about Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) and introduce recent notions about its prognosis. DWM is a malformation associating hypoplasia of the vermis, pseudocystic fourth ventricle, upward displacement of the tentorium, torcular and lateral sinuses and anterio-posterior enlargement of the posterior fossa. It is frequently associated with genetic anomalies, brain malformations (anomalies of gyration, grey matter heterotopias, meningoceles, corpus callosum agenesis...) or systemic malformations (heart, orthopedic, intestinal, urogenital and facia
