Relationship Between Affective Valence of Mind Wandering and Mood: The Role of Resting-State Functional Connectivity.

Mind wandering frequently entails affective content, and the affective valence of such thoughts is closely related to individuals' mood. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Using an individual differences approach, the present study examined whether the affective valence of mind wandering is associated with resting-state functional connectivity among brain regions commonly implicated in mind wandering, and whether it mediates the relationship between such connectivity and mood. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were acqui

Left superior parietal lobe mediates the link between spontaneous mind-wandering tendency and task-switching performance.

While increasing studies have documented the link between mind wandering and task switching, less is known about which brain regions mediate this relationship. Using the MPI-Leipzig Mind-Brain-Body dataset (N = 173), we investigated the association between trait-level tendencies of mind wandering, task-switching performance, structural connectivity, and resting-state functional connectivity. At the behavioral level, we found that higher spontaneous mind-wandering trait scores were associated with shorter reaction times on both repeat and switch trials. The whole brain cortical thickness analys

The cost of being absent: Is meta-awareness of mind-wandering related to depression symptom severity, rumination tendencies and trauma intrusions?

BACKGROUND: Deng, Li and Tang (2014) reported that depression symptom severity is negatively associated with dispositional mindfulness and importantly, positively associated with zone-outs (mind-wandering without meta-awareness). We replicated and extended their study by exploring possible explanations for these relationships, and by also investigating whether mind-wandering is related to (1) trait rumination subtype-brooding, depressive or reflective, and (2) trauma intrusions-a hallmark PTSD symptom, since both rumination and trauma intrusions strongly correlate with depression. We also expl

Sluggish cognitive tempo and ADHD symptoms in relation to task-unrelated thought: Examining unique links with mind-wandering and rumination.

Recent theoretical and empirical evidence highlights associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and task-unrelated thought, including mind-wandering and rumination. However, it has been hypothesized that sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT), characterized by daydreaming and staring behaviors, may uniquely relate to task-unrelated thought. The purpose of the present study was to test whether SCT symptoms are associated with greater mind-wandering and rumination, and whether this association remains when controlling for ADHD and internalizing symptoms. Participants (

Resident behavior and staff distress in the nursing home.

Newly enacted Federal regulations have focused increasing attention on the use of psychoactive drugs and on the treatment of disruptive behavior in the nursing home. To study the interaction between resident behavior and staff distress in nursing homes, we measured the frequency of seven types of behavior problems among 346 residents of intermediate care facilities who were receiving some form of psychoactive medication. Nurses were interviewed on two shifts to determine their perception of the frequency and severity of each behavior in each patient as well as the level of distress it caused a

Poriomania.

Three patients with complex partial seizures experienced prolonged episodes of aimless wandering followed by retrograde amnesia for the experience, a phenomenon called poriomania. Our experience and the literature suggest that this behavior is a prolonged postictal automatism and is not psychogenic. Adjustments of anticonvulsant therapy eliminated this behavior in all three of our patients.

Patterns and associates of hyperphagia in patients with dementia.

This study examined patterns and associates of excessive eating (hyperphagia) in a community-based registry of patients with dementia. From patients enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Patient Registry (n = 439), 39 were identified with excessive eating reported on the Behavior Symptom Checklist at some time during their illness. They were matched for age, gender, duration of disease, and Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) score to "normal eaters." Annualized weight change was determined based on weight from the 6 months before the evaluation to weight 6 months after the evaluation.

Mind wandering during attention performance: Effects of ADHD-inattention symptomatology, negative mood, ruminative response style and working memory capacity.

OBJECTIVE: In adulthood, depressive mood is often comorbid with ADHD, but its role in ADHD-inattentiveness and especially relations with mind wandering remains to be elucidated. This study investigated the effects of laboratory-induced dysphoric mood on task-unrelated mind wandering and its consequences on cognitive task performance in college students with high (n = 46) or low (n = 44) ADHD-Inattention symptomatology and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity symptoms in the normal range. METHODS: These non-clinical high/low ADHD-Inattention symptom groups underwent negative or positive mood induction af

Beyond V40.31: Narrative Phenomenology of Wandering in Autism and Dementia.

Research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and on Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other types of dementia describes a behaviour called 'wandering', a term that denotes movement through space lacking intention or exact destination, as when a person is disoriented or not self-aware. In the U.S., 'wandering' in both ASD and AD has been examined mostly from a management and prevention perspective. It prioritizes safety while primarily overlooking personal experiences of those who 'wander' and their families, thus limiting the range of potentially effective strategies to address this issue. Sexual dimorphism in venom chemistry in Tetragnatha spiders is not easily explained by adult niche differences.

Spider venom composition typically differs between sexes. This pattern is anecdotally thought to reflect differences in adult feeding biology. We used a phylogenetic approach to compare intersexual venom dimorphism between species that differ in adult niche dimorphism. Male and female venoms were compared within and between related species of Hawaiian Tetragnatha, a mainland congener, and outgroups. In some species of Hawaiian Tetragnatha adult females spin orb-webs and adult males capture prey while wandering, while in other species both males and females capture prey by wandering. We predict

EEG Frequency Changes Prior to Making Errors in an Easy Stroop Task.

Background: Mind-wandering is a form of off-task attention that has been associated with negative affect and rumination. The goal of this study was to assess potential electroencephalographic markers of task-unrelated thought, or mind-wandering state, as related to error rates during a specialized cognitive task. We used EEG to record frontal frequency band activity while participants completed a Stroop task that was modified to induce boredom, task-unrelated thought, and therefore mind-wandering. Methods: A convenience sample of 27 older adults (50-80 years) completed a computerized Stroop ma

Goal Commitments and the content of thoughts and dreams: basic principles.

A few empirically supported principles can account for much of the thematic content of waking thought, including rumination, and dreams. (1) An individual's commitments to particular goals sensitize the individual to respond to cues associated with those goals. The cues may be external or internal in the person's own mental activity. The responses may take the form of noticing the cues, storing them in memory, having thoughts or dream segments related to them, and/or taking action. Noticing may be conscious or not. Goals may be any desired endpoint of a behavioral sequence, including finding o

[Care for patients with Pick's disease--by using their preserved procedural memory].

Pick's disease are more often complicated than Alzheimer's disease by behavioral disturbances such as social misconduct and stereotypy, that are troublesome and clinically difficult to manage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of improvement in care for patients with Pick's disease by using their presumably preserved procedural memory. Four inpatients and two outpatients with Pick's disease were studied. Case 1: A 54-year-old right-handed retired clerk presented with a 3-year history of increasing restlessness, word-finding difficulty and impaired comprehension of no

Narratives of care providers concerning picking behavior among institutionalized dementia sufferers.

To illuminate the meaning of picking behavior in institutionalized people with dementia, the narratives of 15 care providers were interpreted using a method inspired by Ricoeur's phenomenologic hermeneutics. The care providers saw the behavior as a form of meaningful communication. The behavior was described as occurring in combination with wandering and in connection with restlessness and stress related to fatigue, difficulty communicating, and lack of occupation. The behavior also was seen as an attempt to engage in meaningful activities. Some care providers reported that the picking behavio

Dimensions of inattention: Cognitive, behavioral, and affective consequences.

Inattention to one's on-going task leads to well-documented cognitive, behavioral, and physiological consequences. At the same time, the reliable association between mind-wandering and negative mood has suggested that there are affective consequences to task inattention as well. We examined this potential relationship between inattention and mood in the following study. Six hundred and fifty-five participants completed self-report questionnaires related to inattentive thinking (i.e., attentional lapses, daydreaming, mindfulness, rumination, reflection, worry, postevent processing, inattentiven

Risk factor and behavioral differences between vascular and Alzheimer's dementias: the pathway to end-stage disease.

Differences between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's dementia may be present in both risk factors and in behavioral manifestations. Behavioral distinctions may be apparent only at particular stages of the disease process, but comparisons at different stages require a large number of subjects. The California Alzheimer Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Center Program has collected data on a large number of subjects with dementia. We examined differences in risk factors and in behaviors in 502 subjects with vascular dementia and 810 subjects with probable Alzheimer's dementia. With respect to ris

Prevalence and Correlates of Elopement in a Nationally Representative Sample of Children with Developmental Disabilities in the United States.

Despite increased awareness and concern about children with developmental disabilities wandering away from adult supervision, there is a paucity of research about elopement. This is the first study to examine and report the prevalence and correlates of elopement in a nationally representative sample of school-age children in the United States with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or cognitive impairment. Data were obtained from the CDC's "Pathways" Survey, a follow-up telephone survey of the parents of 4,032 children with a developmental condition. 3,518 children that had ASD, intellectua
