War and crisis pose serious threats to the mental health of young adults, a group already navigating complex developmental transitions. For those considered at risk, the psychological toll may be even greater due to preexisting vulnerabilities and limited access to support. In this study, we examined the association between war exposure and mental health of Israeli at-risk young adults following the October 7, 2023, attacks and subsequent war. Specifically, drawing on conservation of resources theory, we tested a theoretically informed mediation model in which resource loss was hypothesized to

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to traumatic events is associated with increased risk for negative physical health outcomes, but more work is needed to advance understanding of the mechanisms underlying this relationship. As military deployments frequently involve trauma exposure, this issue has clear implications for veteran populations. This longitudinal study examined the role of mental health symptomatology (i.e., PTSD, depression, and anxiety) in the association between war zone stress and postdeployment physical health in Gulf War veterans.
METHOD: Data were collected in three waves over 7 years fr

Complementary and integrative health (CIH) approaches have gained empirical support and are increasingly being utilized among veterans to treat a myriad of conditions. A cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms including fatigue, headaches, joint pain, indigestion, insomnia, dizziness, respiratory disorders, and memory problems, often referred to as Gulf War Illness (GWI) prominently affect US Gulf War era (GWE) veterans, yet little is known about CIH use within this population. Using data collected as part of a larger study (n = 1153), we examined the influence of demographic charact

This study focused on the effects of exposure to terrorist missile attacks on the physical and mental well being of chronic pain patients. In this prospective and longitudinal design, 55 chronic pain patients treated at a specialty pain clinic completed self-report questionnaires regarding their pain, depression and anxiety pre- and post a three week missile attack on the southern region of Israel. In addition, levels of direct and indirect exposure to the attacks were measured. Results of regression analyses showed that exposure to the attacks through the media predicted an increase in pain i

Veterans of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield - the 1991 Gulf War (GW) - are a unique population who returned from theater with multiple health complaints and disorders. Studies in the U.S. and elsewhere have consistently concluded that approximately 25-32% of this population suffers from a disorder characterized by symptoms that vary somewhat among individuals and include fatigue, headaches, cognitive dysfunction, musculoskeletal pain, and respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic complaints. Gulf War illness (GWI) is the term used to describe this disorder. In addition, brain cancer

INTRODUCTION: We examined associations of early life adversity (ELA) and war exposures with late-life cognition of participants in the Vietnamese Insights into Cognitive Aging Program (VIP).
METHODS: Participants completed psychosocial and neuropsychological assessments, the latter including measures of global cognition, executive function, semantic memory, episodic memory, and visuospatial skills. Principal component analysis identified four war exposure components (harsh conditions and witnessing death, personal life threat/endangerment, family endangerment, and displacement) that were incl

In war zones, the explosion of bombs, bullets, and other ammunition releases multiple neurotoxicants into the environment. The Middle East is currently the site of heavy environmental disruption by massive bombardments. A very large number of US military bases, which release highly toxic environmental contaminants, have also been erected since 2003. Current knowledge supports the hypothesis that war-created pollution is a major cause of rising birth defects and cancers in Iraq. We created elemental bio-imaging of trace elements in deciduous teeth of children with birth defects from Iraq. Healt

To investigate complaints of Gulf War veterans, epidemiologic, case-control and animal modeling studies were performed. Looking for OPIDP variants, our epidemiologic project studied 249 Naval Reserve construction battalion (CB24) men. Extensive surveys were drawn for symptoms and exposures. An existing test (PAI) was used for neuropsychologic. Using FACTOR, LOGISTIC and FREQ in 6.07 SAS, symptom clusters were sought with high eigenvalues from orthogonally rotated two-stage factor analysis. After factor loadings and Kaiser measure for sampling adequacy (0.82), three major and three minor sympto

Chemical and pharmaceutical exposures have been associated with the development of Gulf War Illness (GWI), but how these factors interact with the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains an area of study that has received little attention thus far. We studied the effects of pyridostigmine bromide (an anti-nerve agent) and permethrin (a pesticide) exposure in a mouse model of repetitive mild TBI (r-mTBI), with 5 impacts over a 9-day period, followed by Gulf War (GW) toxicant exposure for 10 days beginning 30 days after the last head injury. We then assessed the chronic behaviora

During their deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), many Veterans were exposed to a wide array of toxic substances and psychologic stressors, most notably airborne/environmental pollutants from open burn pits. Service members do not deploy whilst unhealthy, but often they return with a multitude of acute and chronic symptoms, some of which only begin to manifest years after their deployment. Our findings, while preliminary in nature, suggest that Iraq War Veterans who participated in our survey reported a decrease in overall physical fitness and increased respiratory c

PURPOSE: To examine associations between war experiences, mental health, and gender in a sample of male and female Sierra Leonean former child soldiers.
METHODS: A total of 273 former child soldiers (29% females) were assessed for depression and anxiety by using the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist, and for hostility, confidence, and prosocial attitudes by using an instrument developed for use with Sierra Leonean child soldiers.
RESULTS: The former child soldiers had witnessed and perpetrated violence at largely comparable rates, although females experienced higher rates of rape (p < .0001). More

Gulf War illness (GWI) is a currently untreatable multi-symptom disorder experienced by 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War (GW) veterans. The characteristic hallmarks of GWI include cognitive dysfunction, tremors, migraine, and psychological disturbances such as depression and anxiety. Meta-analyses of epidemiological studies have consistently linked these symptomatic profiles to the combined exposure of GW agents such as organophosphate-based and pyrethroid-based pesticides (e.g. chlorpyrifos (CPF) and permethrin (PER) respectively) and the prophylactic use of pyridostigmine bromide (PB) as a treatme

OBJECTIVE: Indirect exposure to traumatic events through media has increasingly been linked to trauma-related symptoms, yet little is known about how these effects unfold dynamically during prolonged crises. This 6-week longitudinal study examined the temporal and bidirectional associations between war-related media exposure, subjective media appraisal, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms during the 2025 Israel-Hamas hostage deal.
METHOD: A sample of 389 Israeli adults completed weekly assessments of PTSD symptoms, use of traditional and social media for war-related content, and

OBJECTIVE: While early-life adverse experiences have been linked to late-life cognitive decline, few studies have explored war exposure. Paradoxically, one study even indicated a late-life cognitive advantage of early-childhood war exposure. In the present study, we explored these associations.
METHODS: We examined older adults exposed to World War II (1940-1944; n = 1179) and the subsequent Civil war (1946-1949; n = 962) in Greece during early and middle childhood with a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and for ApoE-ε allele status, including demographic information and medical hi

Altered secretion of cortisol, the primary effector of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, has been proposed as a means by which traumatic experiences compromise later mental health. However, despite the popularity of cortisol as a potential biomarker for stress and adversity, findings are inconsistent, and little is known about the impact of war-related trauma on stress physiology of children and adolescents. Here we aimed to evaluate the relationships between war exposure, current living conditions, hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in

Chronic pain is a component of the multisymptom disease known as Gulf War Illness (GWI). There is evidence that pain symptoms could have been a consequence of prolonged and/or excessive exposure to anticholinesterases and other GW chemicals. We previously reported that rats exposed, for 8 weeks, to a mixture of anticholinesterases (pyridostigmine bromide, chlorpyrifos) and a Nav (voltage activated Na(+) channel) deactivation-inhibiting pyrethroid, permethrin, exhibited a behavior pattern that was consistent with a delayed myalgia. This myalgia-like behavior was accompanied by persistent change

BACKGROUND: The Sudanese armed conflict has severely harmed the health system, causing infectious disease outbreaks. Paederus ocular dermatitis, induced by the toxins (paederin) of Paederus beetles, exhibits a clinical presentation that closely resembles several other conditions. This study aims to assess the potential effects of paederin on the ocular region during the Paederus outbreak in the Sudan War of 2025.
METHODS: This is a hospital-based cross-sectional study. All patients with paederin contact with the eye who presented to the Ophthalmology Clinic of the first author in El-Obeid Cit

BACKGROUND: The Holocaust was a uniquely traumatic historical event marked by prolonged periods of starvation, extreme physical and psychological stress, and deprivation of basic human rights. While previous research has explored the general health consequences of Holocaust exposure, the long-term effects on oral health have received limited attention. Oral health is an essential component of overall well-being, with edentulism (complete tooth loss) recognized as a marker of severe oral disease and functional impairment in older adults. This purpose of this study was to assess the long-term im

OBJECTIVE: The chronic impact of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and other toxicants on Gulf War (GW) veterans' health symptoms is unclear.
METHODS: Building on reports of adverse neuropsychological outcomes in GW pesticide applicators exposed to pesticides and pyridostigmine bromide, we now report on health symptoms in this group.
RESULTS: In adjusted analyses, applicators with high exposures/impact to pesticides reported significantly more symptoms (18/34 symptoms) than applicators with lower exposures/impact and were more likely to meet modified Kansas and CDC Gulf War Illness criteria. T
