[The impact of war and armed conflict on maternal, neonatal, and healthcare utilization outcomes].

Armed conflict imposes profound psychological stress and disrupts healthcare systems, placing pregnant women and newborns at particular risk. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the impact of war on maternal and neonatal outcomes, as well as healthcare utilization. Published national cohort studies demonstrate associations between war exposure and increased rates of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, postpartum hemorrhage, and gestational diabetes. Patterns of healthcare utilization shift markedly during wartime, manifesting as redu

The impact of conflicts on patients with chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with kidney disease, especially patients with kidney failure, are disproportionately affected in settings of active conflict, as they rely on near constant medical care for survival. Recent increases in violent conflicts are endangering increasing numbers of patients, requiring immediate attention, a revision of current knowledge and constructive actions. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent violent conflicts have revealed the profound vulnerability of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In war-torn regions such as Ethiopia, Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, availability of ess

Vector-borne diseases and the Syrian conflict: A systematic review of literature from Syria and neighbouring, refugee-hosting countries.

OBJECTIVES: Syria's conflict has forced more than half its populations from their homes, decimated its health system and water and sanitation infrastructure, leading to an increase in communicable diseases, particularly vector-borne diseases (VBDs.) This systematic review explores the epidemiological burden and geographical distribution of VBDs in Syria and neighbouring, refugee-hosting countries following the onset of the Syrian uprisings. METHODS: Four databases were searched using appropriate MeSH terms. Included studies reported on data collected between March 2011 and May 2024 on VBD-aff

Pain in an era of armed conflicts: Prevention and treatment for warfighters and civilian casualties.

Chronic pain is a common squealae of military- and terror-related injuries. While its pathophysiology has not yet been fully elucidated, it may be potentially related to premorbid neuropsychobiological status, as well as to the type of injury and to the neural alterations that it may evoke. Accordingly, optimized approaches for wounded individuals should integrate primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in the form of thorough evaluation of risk factors along with specific interventions to contravene and mitigate the ensuing chronicity. Thus, Premorbid Events phase may encompass assessments

Violence Is a Public Health and Healthcare Issue.

Violence is a global issue that destroys the quality of life in communities and societies. Violence includes intentional and unintentional injury found in individuals who seek health care after acts of family violence, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault, trafficking, youth-on-youth violence, gang warfare, terror, war, disaster, and violence in schools, workplaces and prisons. The nature of violence is evolving. Death as a result of crime victimization now exceeds that of armed conflict. It is the position of the International Association of Forensic Nurses that

Mothers on the Frontline: The Crisis of Maternal Health in Conflict-Torn Sudan.

The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has had devastating effects on maternal health services across the country. More than 1.1 million pregnant women are now in urgent need of medical care as health care infrastructure crumbles under the strain of violence. Hospitals and health centers have been destroyed or rendered inaccessible, and shortages of medical supplies and the widespread loss of health care workers have left many women without access to essential maternal services, including antenatal care, safe delivery assistance, and postnatal care. Consequently, count

Sovereign Rules and Rearrangements: Banning Methadone in Occupied Crimea.

In 2014, Russian authorities in occupied Crimea shut down all medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs for patients with opioid use disorder. These closures dramatically enacted a new political order. As the sovereign occupiers in Crimea advanced new constellations of citizenship and statehood, so the very concept of "right to health" was re-tooled. Social imaginations of drug use helped single out MAT patients as a population whose "right to health," protected by the state, would be artificially restricted. Here, I argue that such acts of medical disenfranchisement should be understood as

Many of these advances when shown effective on the battlefield become incorporated into civilian health care. It is a laboratory where there is unfortunately much clinical material and presents opportunity for the creative, curious, and innovative. This article reviews the medical advances that resulted from the Korean War. There were notable advances in neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and plastic surgery. Tools from prior wars were rediscovered, du

Breastfeeding in the shadow of war: a qualitative study on the experiences of Palestinian women.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict and protracted humanitarian crises profoundly affect maternal and infant health, rendering breastfeeding practices particularly vulnerable. While the existing literature largely focuses on breastfeeding rates and nutritional outcomes in conflict settings, limited attention has been given to how women experience, sustain, and make sense of breastfeeding under such conditions of violence, deprivation and displacement. This study aimed to investigate mothers' breastfeeding experiences during the Gaza War (2023-2025) within the framework of the Infant and Young Child Fee

War-related eye trauma: a study of civilian and military cases from Ukraine's ongoing conflict.

Forecasts indicate a substantial increase in the occurrence of eye injuries in future armed conflicts. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, caused numerous eye injuries among civilians as well as military personnel, generating a serious epidemiological threat related to vision loss. The main goal of this study was to analyze different eye traumas in the Ukrainian population caused by hostilities, which could allow for a relative estimate of the occurrence of long-term consequences for the health care system, such as loss of vision in a large group of citizens. To assess

Impact of war and siege on the vaccine-preventable disease pertussis in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of the war and siege in Tigray on pertussis cases have not been previously assessed. METHOD: All children diagnosed with pertussis in Ayder Hospital two years before and during the war and siege of Tigray. Data were collected using ODK software and analysed with SPSS version 22. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to assess the impact of the war and siege. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Data from a total of 144 children were analysed, most of whom (78.5%, 113/144) had been

Leishmaniasis, conflict, and political terror: A spatio-temporal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis has been estimated to cause the ninth largest burden amongst global infectious diseases. Occurrence of the disease has been anecdotally associated with periods of conflict, leading to its referral as a disease of 'guerrilla warfare.' Despite this, there have been few studies that quantitatively investigate the extent to which leishmaniasis coincides with conflict or political terror. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a longitudinal approach to empirically test for an association between cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis incidence with occurrence of conflict and pol

Group-affirmation and trust in international relations: Evidence from Ukraine.

How can states with a history of recent armed conflict trust one another? Distrust between Ukraine and Russia aggravates security fears and limits hopes for a meaningful resolution of the bloodiest armed conflict in Europe since 1994. Hostility levels have risen dramatically between the populations of Ukraine and Russia after the events of 2013-2015. Political psychology offers two competing approaches to increase trust between the publics of different countries: appealing to an overarching, common identity above the national level vs. affirming a sense of national identity. This project asks
