[Wasp and bee stings].

Occasionally a dentist is confronted with a painful, red facial swelling which has suddenly appeared, with no signs of a dental cause. In addition to the other possible causes, one should consider the possibility of an insect bite, especially in the summer months. The consequences of an insect bite or sting are often underestimated. Hymenopterae (wasps and honeybees) stings are not generally serious in nature, but can result in severe systemic medical complications, such as an allergic reaction. Dentists who are confronted with a patient with an insect bite or sting must provide the patient wi

Venom proteins from endoparasitoid wasps and their role in host-parasite interactions.

Endoparasitoids introduce a variety of factors into their host during oviposition to ensure successful parasitism. These include ovarian and venom fluids that may be accompanied by viruses and virus-like particles. An overwhelming number of venom components are enzymes with similarities to insect metabolic enzymes, suggesting their recruitment for expression in venom glands with modified functions. Other components include protease inhibitors, paralytic factors, and constituents that facilitate/enhance entry and expression of genes from symbiotic viruses or virus-like particles. In addition, t

Orchids mimic green-leaf volatiles to attract prey-hunting wasps for pollination.

An outstanding feature of orchids is the diversity of their pollination systems [1]. Most remarkable are those species that employ chemical deceit for the attraction of pollinators [2]. The orchid Epipactis helleborine is a typical wasp flower, exhibiting physiological and morphological adaptations for the attraction of pollinating social wasps [3]. As noted by Darwin [1], this species is almost entirely overlooked by other potential pollinators, despite a large nectar reward. Therefore, the mechanism for the attraction of pollinating social wasps was something of a mystery. By using a combina

Aldolase sequesters WASP and affects WASP/Arp2/3-stimulated actin dynamics.

In addition to its roles in sugar metabolism, fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (aldolase) has been implicated in cellular functions independent from these roles, termed "moonlighting functions." These moonlighting functions likely involve the known aldolase-actin interaction, as many proteins with which aldolase interacts are involved in actin-dependent processes. Specifically, aldolase interacts both in vitro and in cells with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein (WASP), a protein involved in controlling actin dynamics, yet the function of this interaction remains unknown. Here, the effect of a

WASP and N-WASP in human platelets differ in sensitivity to protease calpain.

Mutations of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) underlie the severe thrombocytopenia and immunodeficiency of the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. WASP, a specific blood cell protein, and its close homologue, the broadly distributed N-WASP, function in dynamic actin polymerization processes. Here it is demonstrated that N-WASP is expressed along with WASP, albeit at low levels, in human blood cells. The presence of approximately 160 nmol/L rapidly acting N-WASP molecules may explain the normal capacity of WASP-negative patient platelets for early agonist-induced aggregation and filopodia formatio

Morphology and ultrastructure of the colleterial glands in Myzinum flower wasps (Tiphiidae, Hymenoptera).

The strategies used by females to ensure the survival of their offspring are one of the key elements in insect reproductive biology. Ectoparasitoid hymenopterans, such as tiphiid wasps, use their ovipositor to deliver a single egg on the host body, where the larva develops. Here we describe the colleterial glands in females of two species of Myzinum and discuss the homology with other glands among Hymenoptera. The glands appear as two large opaque round sac-like structures that are connected to the oviduct. Histological sections revealed a compound gland, with a single layer of class-1 epithel

A Short Review of the Venoms and Toxins of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae).

Parasitoid wasps represent the plurality of venomous animals, but have received extremely little research in proportion to this taxonomic diversity. The lion's share of investigation into insect venoms has focused on eusocial hymenopterans, but even this small sampling shows great promise for the development of new active substances. The family Pompilidae is known as the spider wasps because of their reproductive habits which include hunting for spiders, delivering a paralyzing sting, and entombing them in burrows with one of the wasp's eggs to serve as food for the developing larva. The large

A Mutualistic Poxvirus Exhibits Convergent Evolution with Other Heritable Viruses in Parasitoid Wasps.

For insects known as parasitoid wasps, successful development as a parasite results in the death of the host insect. As a result of this lethal interaction, wasps and their hosts have coevolved strategies to gain an advantage in this evolutionary arms race. Although normally considered to be strict pathogens, some viruses have established persistent infections within parasitoid wasp lineages and are beneficial to wasps during parasitism. Heritable associations between viruses and parasitoid wasps have evolved independently multiple times, but most of these systems remain largely understudied w

Plants attract parasitic wasps to defend themselves against insect pests by releasing hexenol.

BACKGROUND: Plant volatiles play an important role in defending plants against insect attacks by attracting their natural enemies. For example, green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and terpenoids emitted from herbivore-damaged plants were found to be important in the host location of parasitic wasps. However, evidence of the functional roles and mechanisms of these semio-chemicals from a system of multiple plants in prey location by the parasitoid is limited. Little is known about the potential evolutionary trends between herbivore-induced host plant volatiles and the host location of their parasitoids

Biochemical and functional significance of F-BAR domain proteins interaction with WASP/N-WASP.

The Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs (BAR) domain family of proteins includes groups which promote positive (classical BAR, N-BAR, and F-BAR) and negative (I-BAR) membrane deformation. Of these groups, the F-BAR subfamily is the most diverse in its biochemical properties. F-BAR domain proteins dimerize to form a tight scaffold about the membrane. The F-BAR domain provides a banana-shaped, alpha-helical structure that senses membrane curvature. Different types of F-BAR domain proteins contain tyrosine kinase or GTPase activities; some interact with phosphatases and RhoGTPases. Most possess an SH3 domain tha

Plant Developmental Reprogramming by Hymenopteran Gall Wasps: From Biochemical Signals to Molecular Mechanisms.

Gall induction by hymenopteran gall wasps is one of the most sophisticated forms of plant-insect interaction, in which insects manipulate plant development to produce specialized, nutrient-rich structures that support their growth and reproduction. Despite substantial advances, the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying gall formation remain incompletely understood. This review synthesizes current knowledge on gall induction, focusing insect-derived signals, phytohormonal regulation, host developmental reprogramming, nutrient manipulation, and defense modulation. Evidence from physiol

Odorant-Binding and Chemosensory Proteins in Fig Wasps: Evolutionary Insights From Comparative Studies.

Fig wasps (Agaonidae; Hymenoptera) are the only pollinating insects of fig trees (Ficus; Moraceae), forming the most closely and highly specific mutualism with the host. We used transcriptome sequences of 25 fig wasps from six genera to explore the evolution of key molecular components of fig wasp chemosensory genes: odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs). We identified a total 321 OBPs and 240 CSPs, with each species recording from 6 to 27 OBP genes and 6-19 CSP genes. 318 OBP genes are clustered into 17 orthologous groups and can be divided into two groups: PBP sens

Here are two cases of two male patients of 57 and 62 years of age, already known as allergic to stinging hymenoptera venom, who after a horsefly bite have presented a serious 3-4 degree-type Mueller classification systemic reaction. The diagnosis has been carried out clinically and after an accurate environmental anamnesis and along with prick tests and RAST, further specific entomological confirm. In literature the so called wasp-mosquito-syndrome has been indicated where hyaluronidase has been referred to as the cross allergen, between the hymenoptera venom and the mosquito saliva, which lik

Wasp sting anaphylaxis.

Profuse hemostatic defects were demonstrable 14 hr after wasp sting anaphylaxis. The patient's plasma contained an agent or agents that interfered with the action of thrombin, impeding the release of fibrinopeptide A from fibrinogen and the hydrolysis of the synthetic amide H-D-prolyl-L-phenylalanyl-L-arginine p-nitroanilide. This inhibitor could not be equated with known plasma inhibitors of thrombin nor with heparin. Additionally, the titers of nearly all other known clotting factors were reduced as compared to levels obtained after the patient's recovery. Of particular interest were profoun

The WASP and WAVE family proteins.

All eukaryotic cells need to reorganize their actin cytoskeleton to change shape, divide, move, and take up nutrients for survival. The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) and WASP-family verprolin-homologous protein (WAVE) family proteins are fundamental actin-cytoskeleton reorganizers found throughout the eukaryotes. The conserved function across species is to receive upstream signals from Rho-family small GTPases and send them to activate the Arp2/3 complex, leading to rapid actin polymerization, which is critical for cellular processes such as endocytosis and cell motility. Molecular a

Dispensable players: N-WASP and WASP are not crucial for homology-directed DNA repair.

N-WASP and WASP can induce actin polymerization via Arp2/3 and were reported to be crucial for homology-directed repair (HDR) of DNA double-strand breaks (DSB). The underlying mechanism was suggested to involve nuclear actin polymerization, but the mechanistic details were debated. Unexpectedly, we show now that neither WASP nor N-WASP is required for HDR during CRISPR-mediated genome editing. Using knock-out and overexpression of N-WASP and WASP in U2OS cells, we did not detect alterations in total gene editing, HDR, or the ratio of HDR to non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) as assessed by diff

Induction of filopodium formation by a WASP-related actin-depolymerizing protein N-WASP.

Cdc42 is a small GTPase of the Rho family which regulates the formation of actin filaments to generate filopodia. Although there are several proteins such as PAK, ACK and WASP (Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein) that bind Cdc42 directly, none of these can account for the filopodium formation induced by Cdc42. Here we demonstrate that before it can induce filopodium formation, Cdc42 must bind a WASP-related protein, N-WASP, that is richest in neural tissues but is expressed ubiquitously. N-WASP induces extremely long actin microspikes only when co-expressed with active Cdc42, whereas WASP, which

Bee and wasp stings of the eye. Retained intralenticular wasp sting: A case report.

Two different stages should be considered in the management of bee and wasp stings to the eye. The first is the acute stage of activity of the specific insect venom on the structures the eye. The reaction of the eye to the particular insult is considered here in regard to the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. The second stage is that of the retained intraocular foreign body, the inert sting. Little is known about the reaction of the eye to the presence of chitinous sting and its effect on the structures of the eye. We report a follow-up study of a sting retained for 28 years, and emp
