Waste management in disease prevention: A public health overview.

The rapid rise in urbanization and consumption has intensified global solid waste generation, creating pressing public health challenges. Improper waste disposal contributes to infectious diseases via vector proliferation, water and soil contamination and direct exposure to hazardous materials. This review synthesizes evidence on health risks from municipal, healthcare and electronic waste while evaluating interventions within the integrated solid waste management framework. Data shows the link between poor waste management and increased incidence of vector-borne, waterborne, respiratory and c

Making waste management public (or falling back to sleep).

Human-produced waste is a major environmental concern, with communities considering various waste management practices, such as increased recycling, landfilling, incineration, and waste-to-energy technologies. This article is concerned with how and why publics assemble around waste management issues. In particular, we explore Noortje Marres and Bruno Latour's theory that publics do not exist prior to issues but rather assemble around objects, and through these assemblages, objects become matters of concern that sometimes become political. The article addresses this theory of making things publ

Management of LVAD in Cerebral Salt-Wasting Syndrome.

The use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) is now commonplace in the management of nonischemic cardiomyopathy. LVADs are preload-dependent and afterload-sensitive, meaning rapid changes in a patient's volume status can significantly impact device function. Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS), a rare cause of hyponatremia, is characterized by an acute increase in urine output and low serum sodium. Here, we present the case of a 43-year-old man with end-stage heart failure supported by an LVAD, who experienced refractory low-flow alarms due to CSWS. The patient initially presented with

Governing waste and producing environmental subjects: a sociological analysis of decentralised solid waste management model in Kerala, India.

This study examines decentralized solid waste governance in Kerala through the institutional framework of the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS). While existing research on waste management primarily focuses on technical and policy implementation aspects, limited attention has been given to its sociological dimensions. Using qualitative document analysis of policy documents, institutional reports, and operational guidelines, the study analyzes how decentralized governance is structured and represented within official discourse. Drawing on governmentality, structuration theory, and social capital, the pa

Nitrogen management in the optimization of microbial plastic waste upcycling.

Bioprocesses grant us with broad opportunities to build a circular carbon economy. Using microbes allows us to replace non-renewable resources and change waste management strategies, including recycling and upcycling. However, research still lags on strategies to enable economic viability of these types of bioprocesses relative to the traditional production methods. Tuning the composition of the microbial growth medium is one way to address these issues. This allows us to gain insight into the interactions of nutrients and the focal organisms in order to formulate appropriate media recipes to

Smart technologies for urban cleanliness and waste management: an overview.

Urbanisation and population growth have significantly increased waste generation, intensifying the need for efficient urban cleaning and waste management. Despite technological progress in other sectors, waste collection and street cleaning practices remain largely reactive, resource-intensive, and insufficiently supported by live information. In this context, smart and data-driven technologies offer new opportunities to improve operational efficiency, environmental performance, and urban quality of life. This study presents a structured overview of emerging digital technologies applied to mun

Medication management: how medication review improves lives and reduces waste.

Ageing is associated with an increased risk of adverse drug reactions. This calls for great care and diligent follow up when prescribing medication to older patients. Yet, this is seldom the case and the proportion of older people taking five or more medications has quadrupled from 12% to 49% in the last 20 years. Certain medications are riskier than others. Those with anticholinergic effects are of particular concern. Adverse effects of anticholinergics include dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, urinary retention, blurred vision, tachycardia and neu

Healthcare waste: from incineration to pyrolysis: a comparative life cycle assessment of two different healthcare plastic waste management processes.

BACKGROUND: Plastic waste from healthcare is an increasing environmental challenge, particularly in resource-intensive clinical pathways such as dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) generates large quantities of single-use plastic materials, making its waste stream a priority for sustainable intervention. Conventional disposal through incineration contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and produces hazardous ash. Pyrolysis, a chemical recycling process that converts mixed plastic waste into usable outputs, has been proposed as a lower-carbon alternative. This study aimed to

Impact of waste segregation on leachate characteristics in semi-aerobic landfills: a pilot-scale evaluation for sustainable waste management.

This study evaluates the effects of different residual waste compositions, derived from simulated material recovery scenarios, on leachate quality and waste stabilization in pilot-scale semi-aerobic landfills. Unlike previous studies that examined semi-aerobic landfill performance using waste streams with fixed compositions, this study investigates how waste segregation-driven changes in residual waste composition affect leachate characteristics. Three bioreactors representing recovery levels of 0%, 25%, and 50% were operated using municipal solid waste from Lima, Peru, and monitored over an 1

Pharmacologic management of human immunodeficiency virus wasting syndrome.

Pharmacologic interventions for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) wasting have been studied since the 1990s, but the results of these interventions have been difficult to compare because the studies used different HIV wasting definitions and assessed various patient outcomes. Thus, we performed a systematic review of the current literature to identify studies that evaluated pharmacologic management of HIV wasting and to compare and contrast treatment options. Further, we provide a comprehensive review of these treatment options and describe the definition of HIV wasting used in each study, th

Challenges and opportunities in managing biodegradable plastic waste: A review.

Biodegradable plastics have certain challenges in a waste management perspective. The existing literature reviews fail to provide a consolidated overview of different process steps of biodegradable plastic waste management and to discuss the support provided by the existing legislation for the same. The present review provides a holistic overview of these process steps and a comprehensive relative summary of 13 existing European Union (EU) laws related to waste management and circular economy, and national legislations plus source separation guidelines of 13 countries, to ensure the optimal us
