Renal papillary necrosis in horses after phenylbutazone and water deprivation.

Acute renal papillary necrosis occurred in five horses given normal therapeutic doses of phenylbutazone and deprived of water for 36 to 48 hours prior to euthanasia. Five horses given phenylbutazone alone and four horses subjected to water deprivation alone did not develop papillary necrosis. Urinalyses were normal prior to water deprivation, and also after water deprivation in the horses that did not receive phenylbutazone, but the water-deprived, phenylbutazone-treated horses had many red blood cells, transitional epithelial cells, and large numbers of oxalate crystals in their urine. Ulcera

[Nanism caused by water deprivation, with transitory growth hormone deficiency].

Report of a case of a girl admitted for alcoholic poisoning then for a toxic syndrome with considerable hypernatremia. Clinical examination showed a dwarfism (-4 S.D.) with break of the growth curve and bone-age retardation. History revealed cruelty and thirsting since the age of 2 years. Isolated somatotropin insufficiency was found. Separation from the family and free drinking induced a spectacular recovery of growth and normalization of growth hormone level. The relative role and relationships between growth hormone deficiency and chronic dehydration due to water deprivation in the physiopa

Water-intake volume regulation in the rat: schedule-induced drinking compared with water-deprivation-induced drinking.

Hungry rats drink extremely large amounts of water when they are intermittently fed small amount of food (schedule-induced polydipsia). Are such animals motivated to drink for long durations, to ingest large amounts of fluid, or to do both? When drinking-tube apertures were decreased to slow the rate of water ingestion, each of eight rats spent more time drinking (M = 11.5 min) than when larger apertures were used (M = 7.8 min). The mean volumes ingested were not different. These equal volumes were generated by adjustment of each drink duration in accordance with ingestion rate even during the

Sex difference in urinary concentrating ability of rats with water deprivation.

Our previous demonstration of sexual dimorphism in the antidiuretic response to exogenous vasopressin prompted us to investigate the response to moderately high levels of endogenous vasopressin stimulated by water deprivation in conscious rats. After 24 h water deprivation, urine flow was significantly higher and urine osmolality lower in females than in males. Plasma concentrations of vasopressin were higher in females than in males after water deprivation, but plasma osmolality did not differ. Gonadectomy, which had no effect in dehydrated males, decreased urine flow and increased urine osmo

Induction of the renal stanniocalcin-1 gene in rodents by water deprivation.

Stanniocalcin-1 (STC-1) is made by kidney collecting duct cells for targeting of nephron mitochondria to promote respiratory uncoupling and calcium uniport activity. However, the purpose of these actions and how the renal gene is regulated are poorly understood. This study has addressed the latter issue by monitoring renal STC-1 gene expression in different models of kidney function. Unilateral nephrectomy and over-hydration had no bearing on renal gene activity in adult Wistar rats. Dehydration, on the other hand, had time-dependent stimulatory effects in male and female kidney cortex, where

Diagnostic value of the water deprivation test in the polyuria-polydipsia syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes insipidus (DI) and primary polydipsia (PP) are characterised by polyuria and polydipsia. It is crucial to differentiate between these two disorders since the treatment is different. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of the short and an extended variant of the water deprivation test (WDT) and of measuring urinary vasopressin (AVP) in patients with polyuria and polydipsia. DESIGN: A retrospective, single-centre study based on WDTs performed between 2004 and 2014 including 104 consecutive patients with the polyuria-polydipsia syndrome. During a strict

Operant performance patterns of normal and nervous water-deprived dogs.

Previous studies have shown that most food-deprived genetically nervous pointer dogs fail to learn a bar-pressing response for food reward and those which do learn are erratic in bar-pressing compared to genetically normal pointer dogs which usually learn rapidly and perform well. Benzodiazepine drugs facilitate learning and performance of the responses in nervous dogs. The present study aimed at finding whether a stronger drive producing state, such as water deprivation, would facilitate learning and performance in even severely nervous dogs. Eight normal line and 7 nervous line dogs successf

Integrated Physioecological Adaptation of Apodemus chevrieri to Water Deprivation: Synergistic Responses in Body Mass Regulation and Water Metabolism.

As global climate change intensifies, increasing drought in Southwest China may impose strong water stress on small mammals in the Hengduan Mountains. Apodemus chevrieri is endemic to this region, but its integrated responses to water restriction remain unclear. Here, we compared control and water-stressed individuals and quantified changes in body mass, food intake, body temperature (T b), metabolic traits, evaporative water loss (EWL), metabolic water production relative to EWL (MWP/EWL), and visceral and digestive-tract morphology. Water restriction reduced body mass, food intake, core T b,

Thermoregulation in complex situations: combined heat exposure, infectious fever and water deprivation.

Heat exposure, infectious fever and water deprivation are stressors that, individually, produce disturbances in more than one regulated system, calling for diverse compensatory responses. A potential conflict is created when these stimuli are combined and impose concurrent stressful loads on the body because the homeostatic defenses mobilized against one are also partly needed against the other stressors. To learn how the competing demands of combined stressors for shared regulatory systems are met, rabbits were exposed to 32 degrees C and 37 degrees C (heat), administered lipopolysaccharide (

Evaluation of a modified water-deprivation test for diagnosis of polyuric disorders in dogs.

A modified water-deprivation test was performed on 12 polyuric and 4 clinically normal dogs. Immediately after maximal urine osmolality had been achieved with water deprivation, antidiuretic hormone was injected to test further renal concentrating ability. The test provided accurate diagnosis of severe hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus in 3 dogs, partial diabetes insipidus in 2 dogs, and primary (psychogenic) polydipsia in 2 dogs. Five polyuric dogs with hyperadreno corticism had a response to the modified water-deprivation test similar to that of dogs with partial diabetes indi

Effects of water deprivation for 48 hours on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of furosemide in rats.

The effects of water deprivation for 48 h on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of furosemide were examined after intravenous, 8 mg/kg body weight, and oral administration, 16 mg/kg body weight, of furosemide to control and water deprived rats. After i.v. administration, the total body and nonrenal clearances decreased significantly in water-deprived rats. The urine output, urinary excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride based on grams of kidney weight, and the diuretic, natriuretic and chloruretic efficiencies decreased significantly in water-deprived rats after both intravenous an

Increased hexokinase activity in forebrain of water-deprived and diabetes insipidus rats.

Metabolic studies using the 2-[14C]deoxy-D-glucose and cytochrome oxidase techniques have demonstrated changes in the activity of central sites associated with the hypothalamoneurohypophysial system in water-deprived (WD) and diabetes insipidus (DI) rats. Another method that may be used as an index of metabolic activity in discrete regions of the central nervous system is the measurement of hexokinase (HK) activity. This study describes changes in metabolic activity, as measured by HK histochemistry, in regions of the forebrain of WD and DI rats. Significant increases in HK activity measured b

The response of plasma arginine vasopressin to 14 h water deprivation in the elderly.

The response of plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) to 14 h water deprivation was investigated in 30 healthy elderly individuals ranging in age from 63 to 87 years, with a mean age of 76.5 years. The mean AVP concentrations, both at normal hydration and after the water deprivation test, were significantly lower than those in the young. Moreover, the post-test mean value of Uosm/Posm in the elderly increased up to 1.55 +/- 0.52, which is lower than that in the young in whom the value was greater than 2. These results suggest that the aged are prone to incomplete diabetes insipidus. This pathologi

Effect of losartan on sodium appetite of hypothyroid rats subjected to water and sodium depletion and water, sodium and food deprivation.

The involvement of angiotensin AT1 receptors in sodium appetite was studied in hypothyroid rats treated with the angiotensin II antagonist losartan. Losartan was administered chronically by the oral route or acutely by the subcutaneous route after water and sodium depletion or water, sodium and food deprivation. Three days after addition of losartan to the food at the dose of 1.0 mg x g(-1), the rats significantly reduced (P < 0.02) their spontaneous intake of 1.8% NaCl. Increasing the dose of losartan to 2.0 and 4.0 mg x g(-1) did not reduce NaCl intake; in contrast, the intensity of the sodi

Serum osmolality and effects of water deprivation in captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

Serum from 21 healthy, captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) was evaluated by measured and calculated osmolality. Serum osmolality results for this population of Asian elephants had a median of 261 mOsm/kg and an interquartile interval of 258-269 mOsm/kg when measured by freezing point osmometry and a median of 264 mOsm/kg and an interquartile interval of 257-269 mOsm/kg when measured by vapor pressure osmometry. These values are significantly lower than values reported in other mammalian species and have important diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Calculated osmolality produced unr

Water intoxication and syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone in schizophrenic patients evaluated by water deprivation and load tests.

A study was conducted on 16 schizophrenic patients with compulsive water drinking (CWD) and 10 normal controls, and the relation between serum antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and serum osmolality measured under ordinary conditions of free water intake. A water deprivation test and a water load test were also carried out on 10 schizophrenics with CWD and 10 normal controls. A comparison between the patients and controls showed the following results: the patients showed a significantly high level of serum ADH for their serum osmolality level, and 3 of them were consistent with the syndrome of inappro
