Water insecurity is a pervasive problem in sub-Saharan Africa that co-occurs with other challenges like food insecurity and intimate partner violence (IPV), which may intersect to worsen HIV/AIDS outcomes. However, little is known about its association with IPV among women living with HIV (WLWH) who are vulnerable to both. We assessed the prevalence of IPV among WLWH in western Kenya and whether water insecurity was associated with a higher likelihood of IPV. We analyzed baseline data for WLWH enrolled in the Shamba Maisha cluster randomized controlled trial, a multisectoral intervention desig

Drinking water access and water and food insecurity have been linked to mental well-being, but few studies have comprehensively assessed potential pathways linking these associations. Understanding these mediation pathways is particularly important among pregnant women, as prenatal stress and poor mental well-being have been shown to negatively impact fetal development. In this study, we address this gap by analyzing the relationships between drinking water source and water and food insecurity with mental well-being amongst pregnant women living in low-income, urban neighborhoods of Beira, Moz

Although water insecurity has been discussed in general, its impacts on mothers' physical and mental health, and infants' and young children's feeding (IYCF), has largely been ignored. This study explores household water insecurity experiences and their association with optimal health and nutrition of women and children in the Rajanpur district of Punjab Province. Using focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informants (KIIs) interviews from an area with high maternal-child malnutrition prevalence, a qualitative study was conducted to describe local experiences of water acquirement and arrange

Despite progress in HIV management, resource insecurities continue to threaten the gains of antiretroviral therapy among people with HIV in resource-limited settings. Water insecurity, common in areas with high HIV burden, remains an underexplored barrier to optimal HIV care. This study assessed socioecological drivers and dimensions as determinants of water insecurity among 434 adults with HIV receiving care in public hospitals in a high HIV prevalence region of western Kenya. We used the 12-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences Scale and found a water insecurity prevalence of 64.3% amo

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity and inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) contribute to ill health. However, the interactions between household food insecurity, WASH and health have been rarely assessed concurrently. This study investigated compounded impacts of household food insecurity and WASH on self-reported physical and mental health of adults in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional survey interviewed 552 households in one northern and one southern province of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The survey incorporated previously validated

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a major public health concern globally, particularly among people living with HIV (PLHIV). While prior research has focused on individual and interpersonal factors, less attention has been given to structural determinants such as housing and water insecurity. This study examines associations between these insecurities and emotional, physical, and sexual abuse among PLHIV in Kenya. Data were drawn from a cross-sectional study (N = 1,132), with 515 participants aged ≥ 16 years completing IPV measures. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable generalized l

INTRODUCTION: This article examines the interconnected burdens of food and water insecurity among migrant and displaced populations in North America, highlighting critical gaps in current research and policy. While extensive scholarship demonstrates that these populations disproportionately experience food insecurity-defined as limited access to nutritionally sufficient and culturally acceptable food-water insecurity, or unreliable access to safe water for consumption and household needs, as experienced by these populations has received comparatively less attention. Emerging evidence shows tha

BACKGROUND: Inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are important drivers of the global burden of disease, and their impact is exacerbated during outbreaks. Directives to practice handwashing and physical distancing may be impractical for people that have limited access to WASH resources. In this study, which took place during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, we explore the relationship between control measures for global health crises and water, sanitation, and hygiene insecurity, with implications for other infectious diseases and future health emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing salinity of groundwater is a global environmental health threat that has been overlooked in human biology and may increase the risk of water insecurity, dehydration, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and hypertension in humans. However, no health standards exist for salinity levels in drinking water. This protocol paper describes the Daasanach Human Biology Project, which is testing how water salinity exposure and heat stress impact hydration, kidney disease, and blood pressure among Daasanach pastoralists in a hot-arid environment in northern Kenya.

In this essay, I foreground four interconnected, localocentric stories and case studies that critique the ideological underpinnings of global health benevolence and interventions in water insecure rural West Bengal. Through ethnographic fieldwork, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, field notes, reflexive journaling, artifact photograph narrative method (due to the inaccessibility of photovoice in this research context), and participant observation, I interrogate how marginalized communities navigate health amidst top-down developmental frameworks. Using the theoretical int

INTRODUCTION: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk of developing injection-related infections, including abscesses. Access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are key human rights and services; yet these services have been underexplored as predictors of abscesses among PWID.
METHODS: Longitudinal analysis was employed among a cohort of PWID to determine if WASH insecurity (lack of access) was associated with abscess incidence in the Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, United States metropolitan area during 24-months of follow-up survey data from 2020 to 2023. We calculated abscess

BACKGROUND: Greater social capital is associated with positive health outcomes and better HIV management. The ways by which social capital may influence household water insecurity (HHWI), a critical determinant of health among persons living with HIV, remain underexplored. Further, despite the importance of reliable water access and use for health and agricultural productivity, few studies have described the strategies smallholder farmers living with HIV use to manage water insecurity.
OBJECTIVE: We qualitatively explored how an agricultural intervention (provision of a treadle pump for irrig

Evidence for the co-occurrence of lacking food and clean drinking water is largely missing for high-income countries and has overlooked water's importance for food safety. Here we examined how lacking food and food safety covaried with lacking clean drinking water, using World Risk Poll data from 121 countries across country-income levels (N = 124,003). Lacking food for more than a day in the past year was associated with lacking clean drinking water for more than a day in the past year. Participants who lacked both food and clean water, or either alone (versus neither) were more likely to exp

This study examined access to water, food, and nutrition programs among marginalized communities in Southern Punjab, Pakistan, and their effects on nutrition. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used in this study. We held two focus group discussions (one with 10 males and one with 10 females) and conducted in-depth interviews with 15 key stakeholders, including 20 mothers and 10 healthcare providers. A survey of 235 households was carried out to evaluate water and food insecurity, with the data analyzed using Wilcoxon's rank-sum test, t-test, and Pearson's chi-square test. The results

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a contextual determinant of health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Climate-related stressors such as water scarcity and food insecurity may influence oral health indirectly by disrupting hygiene practices, dietary patterns, and access to care. However, epidemiological evidence examining these relationships remains limited, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to examine the association between selected climate-related exposures and oral health outcomes among adults residing in climate-vulnerable districts of Pakis

The ethics of providing health care in resource-poor environments is a complex topic. It implies two related questions: What can we do with the resources on hand? Of all the things we can do, which ones should we do? "Resource-poor" (i.e., resource-challenged, resource-constrained) environments are situations in which clinicians, organizations, or healthcare systems have the knowledge and skills, but not the means, to carry out highly effective and beneficial interventions. Determinants of a population's health often rely less on disease and injury management than on recognizing and meeting th

BACKGROUND: Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) access is critical to public health and human dignity. People who inject drugs (PWID) experience stigma and structural violence that may limit WASH access. Few studies have assessed WASH access, insecurity, and inequities among PWID. We describe WASH access, social and geographic inequalities, and factors associated with WASH insecurity among PWID in the Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan area.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional binational study, we interviewed PWID (age 18+) in 2020-2021 about WASH access and insecurity. City of residence (Tijuana/

Malnutrition and household food insecurity are major public health concerns among under-five children in Somaliland, often sharing overlapping risk factors. Using data from the 2020 Somaliland Health and Demographic Survey (n = 3961), this study assessed their prevalence, spatial distribution, and shared determinants through descriptive statistics, spatial autocorrelation, and a multivariate Bayesian spatial model. The prevalence of malnutrition and food insecurity was 42.7% and 26.7%, respectively, with higher risk of malnutrition among children in food-insecure households (OR = 1.17). Both o

Urban sanitation is essential for health and well-being, yet provision remains deeply unequal, particularly in informal settlements. This study compares lived sanitation experiences across Nairobi's informal and formal settlements and examines how water insecurity - too much, too little, too dirty water - intersects with sanitation. We combined eight focus group discussions (n = 65 participants) with household surveys (n = 545) to analyse disparities across Human Right to Sanitation (HRtS) normative content dimensions of availability, accessibility, quality, safety, affordability, and acceptab
