Stunning techniques and climatic influence in rainbow trout: Sensibility state, welfare and recovery ability.

This study evaluated the effects of climatic conditions and three stunning techniques on the stress response, sensibility state, and recovery ability of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Stunning methods included ice-water immersion (ICE) and two electric shock treatments combined with ice-water immersion (E200: 200 mA for 2 s; E400: 400 mA for 0.5 s followed by 200 mA for 1.5 s). Rainbow trout were exposed to these methods in winter and summer to assess the impact of seasonality. Under winter conditions, fish in the ICE group retained sensibility, whereas electrically stunned fish lost sen

Coefficient of friction: tribological studies in man - an overview.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Compared to other studies of skin, relatively few studies have focused on the friction of skin. This work reviews existing skin friction, emphasizing test apparatuses and parameters that have added to information regarding the friction coefficient. This review also outlines what factors are important to consider in future friction studies. METHODS: Past studies have utilized numerous designs for a test apparatus, including probe geometry and material, as well as various probe motions (rotational vs. linear). Most tests were performed in vivo; a few were performed in vitro

Restoring Skin Hydration and Barrier Function: Mechanistic Insights Into Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis.

Healthy skin is structured to maintain water balance by maximizing water retention and minimizing evaporative loss. The water-holding and barrier functions of the skin can be impaired by several factors that lead to xerosis cutis (dry skin); however, they can also be restored by basic emollients that act through the physicochemical properties of their constituents. This article aims to give a narrative review of the physiology of normal skin hydration, the key pathophysiological mechanisms implicated in dry skin, and the functional effects of basic emollients for managing xerosis cutis. Skin h

WASP: Wearable Analytical Skin Probe for Dynamic Monitoring of Transepidermal Water Loss.

Early diagnosis of skin barrier dysfunction helps provide timely preventive care against diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, food allergies, and other atopic skin disorders. Skin barrier function is commonly evaluated by measuring the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) through stratum corneum due to its noninvasive characteristics. However, existing commercial TEWL devices are significantly affected by many factors, such as ambient temperature, humidity, air flow, water accumulation, initial water contents on the skin surface, bulky sizes, high costs, and requirements for well-control

Analysis of clinical presentations, lip transepidermal water loss and associated dermatological conditions in patients with chronic cheilitis.

Chronic cheilitis (CC) is a spectrum of inflammatory changes of unknown etiology that affect the vermilion of the lips. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology, clinical presentations and risk factors of CC. Patients with CC were recruited from the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Disease of China. A convenience sample of inhabitants who live in the same geographical region were recruited as the control group. The lip skin transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and capacitance of CC patients were compared with that of age- and gender-matched controls. Our results demonstrated that of

"Normal" TEWL-how can it be defined? A systematic review.

Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), the total non-eccrine sweat water evaporating from a given area of epidermis over time, is a measurement of skin barrier integrity. Skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis and atopic dermatitis) often result in transient increases in TEWL, so, knowledge of "normal" TEWL values may be used to predict disease progression in dermatological settings. Variables such as age, race and anatomic location have been suggested to affect TEWL, but current regulatory agencies have failed to control for additional variables of interest. Thus, this review summarizes variables that ma

Water and heat--the priority for the newborn infant.

Maintaining fluid and heat balance is of vital importance to the newborn infant. At birth, the infant is exposed to a cold and dry environment, and preterm neonates in particular, are then at risk of dehydration and hypothermia. These conditions may have serious consequences and significantly influence mortality and morbidity. Preterm neonates have a high rate of water and heat loss mainly as a consequence of their immature skin. The care environment influences the magnitude of water and heat exchange and needs to be individually tailored on the basis of the infant's clinical status, maturity

Hypertension in severe pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis: case report and review of literature.

Dehydration from fluid loss secondary to glycosuria is the central pathogenesis of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Decreased oral intake and increased insensible water loss are also common in DKA. Severe dehydration should lead to hypovolemia and hypotension. We present a case of DKA with severe dehydration and hypertension in contrast to expected hypotension. The aim of this article was to increase awareness that pediatric DKA could present with hypertension, and this should be looked at and included in DKA management protocols.

[Etiology of hypertonic dehydration (author's transl)].

A revision of the ethiology in hypertonic dehydration of 80 infants admitted in the Clínica Infantil "La Paz", between 1972--1973 is made. The most important ethiological factors were: hyperconcentrated food (86% in neonates), vomiting, diarrhoea, increase of insensible water loss (respiratory, fever). The etiopathogenic and physiopathologic bases of hyperconcentrated diet in the development of hypertonic dehydration in accordance with "solute overload" to neonatal kidney are discussed. The autoperpetuation mechanisms of hypertonic dehydration are also discussed.

Behavioural evidence of a humidistat: a temperature-compensating mechanism of hydroregulation in spotted salamanders.

The ability to control hydration state is essential for terrestrial species, especially amphibians, which are highly susceptible to dehydration. Here, we examined how temperature (17°C versus 22°C) influenced behavioural hydroregulation in spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) using a laboratory humidity gradient. Salamanders defended a constant vapour pressure deficit (VPD) between temperatures by targeting higher relative humidity at 22°C than at 17°C, possibly to compensate for increased evaporative demand at warmer temperatures. Individuals selecting higher VPDs experienced greater eva

Aestivation motifs explain hypertension and muscle mass loss in mice with psoriatic skin barrier defect.

AIM: Recent evidence suggests that arterial hypertension could be alternatively explained as a physiological adaptation response to water shortage, termed aestivation, which relies on complex multi-organ metabolic adjustments to prevent dehydration. Here, we tested the hypothesis that chronic water loss across diseased skin leads to similar adaptive water conservation responses as observed in experimental renal failure or high salt diet. METHODS: We studied mice with keratinocyte-specific overexpression of IL-17A which develop severe psoriasis-like skin disease. We measured transepidermal wat

Stratum corneum dysfunction in dandruff.

Dandruff is characterized by a flaky, pruritic scalp and affects up to half the world's population post-puberty. The aetiology of dandruff is multifactorial, influenced by Malassezia, sebum production and individual susceptibility. The commensal yeast Malassezia is a strong contributory factor to dandruff formation, but the presence of Malassezia on healthy scalps indicates that Malassezia alone is not a sufficient cause. A healthy stratum corneum (SC) forms a protective barrier to prevent water loss and maintain hydration of the scalp. It also protects against external insults such as microor

Flexibility of cutaneous evaporative water loss in response to hydration in pregnant prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) and their neonates.

Viviparous snakes may be particularly vulnerable to predicted increases in drought because of the high hydric costs associated with embryonic development and gestation, and their reliance on limited free-standing bodies of water or rain events for hydration. Drought will have negative implications for viper populations if females become increasingly water stressed and resorb developing embryos to conserve bodily water. We conducted a study to investigate the importance of drinking water in late-term pregnancy and its effect on cutaneous evaporative water loss (CEWL). We measured hydration and

Water requirement of premature newborn infants.

Two groups of studies related to the water requirement of premature infants are reviewed. The first examined the effects of several environmental factors on insensible water loss (IWL) and oxygen consumption of 20 low-birth-weight infants. Incubator air temperature above the neutral zone increased IWL, as did the use of a radiant heat source instead of a conventional incubator. A plastic heat shield slightly reduced IWL of infants in incubators. The second group of studies examined the effects of excess water intake in premature infants. 170 infants were randomly assigned to receive "low" (ave

Fluid and electrolyte management in term and preterm neonates.

Disorders of fluid and electrolyte are common in neonates and a proper understanding of the physiological changes in body water and solute after birth is essential to ensure a smooth transition from the aquatic in-utero environment. The newborn kidney has a limited capacity to excrete excess water and sodium and overload of fluid or sodium in the first week may result in morbidities like necrotizing enterocolitis, patent ductus arteriosus and chronic lung disease. Simple measures like use of transparent plastic barriers, coconut oil application, caps and socks are effective in reducing insensi
