Wavelet analysis of intermittent dynamics in nocturnal electrocardiography and electroencephalography data.

This paper presents the results of a study of the characteristics of phase synchronization between electrocardiography(ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals during night sleep. Polysomnographic recordings of eight generally healthy subjects and eight patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were selected as experimental data. A feature of this study was the introduction of an instantaneous phase for EEG and ECG signals using a continuous wavelet transform at the heart rate frequency using the concept of time scale synchronization, which eliminated the emergence of asynchronous ar

Discrete wavelet transform for analysis of spike-wave discharges in rats.

In this paper, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) as a feature extraction method was used in representing the spike-wave discharges (SWD) records of WAG/Rij rats. The SWD records of WAG/Rij rats were decomposed into time-frequency representations using the DWT and the statistical features were calculated to depict their distribution. The obtained wavelet coefficients were used to identify characteristics of the signal that were not apparent from the original time domain signal. The present study demonstrates that the wavelet coefficients are useful in determining the dynamics in the time-fre

Analysis of time-varying signals using continuous wavelet and synchrosqueezed transforms.

The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has played a key role in the analysis of time-frequency information in many different fields of science and engineering. It builds on the classical short-time Fourier transform but allows for variable time-frequency resolution. Yet, interpretation of the resulting spectral decomposition is often hindered by smearing and leakage of individual frequency components. Computation of instantaneous frequencies, combined by frequency reassignment, may then be applied by highly localized techniques, such as the synchrosqueezing transform and ConceFT, in order to r

Inter-scale wavelet analysis for speckle reduction in thyroid ultrasound images.

A wavelet-based method for speckle suppression in ultrasound images of the thyroid gland is introduced. The classification of image pixels as speckle or part of important image structures is accomplished within the framework of back-propagation tracking and singularity detection of wavelet transform modulus maxima, derived from inter-scale analysis. A comparative study with other de-speckling techniques, employing quantitative indices, demonstrated that our method achieved superior speckle reduction performance and edge preservation properties. Moreover, a questionnaire regarding qualitative i

Microscopic Pollen Image Classification via Contour-Signal Representation, Wavelet Analysis, and CNN.

Accurate classification of pollen grains in microscopic images remains challenging because of noise, structural variability, background complexity, weak texture, and intra-class similarity. To address these issues, this study proposes a hybrid framework that integrates contour-signal modeling, spectral-wavelet analysis, and deep learning for robust microscopic pollen image recognition. In the proposed approach, microscopic pollen images are first converted into contour-based point-signal representations, allowing object boundaries to be analyzed as structured one-dimensional signals. Discrete Wavelet Transform Analysis of PERG Signal Energies for Differentiating Retinal Pathologies.

Pattern Electroretinography (PERG) can effectively assess both macular cone and retinal ganglion cell activity. However, heterogeneous disease presentations and its low signal-to-noise ratio has limited its application for diagnostic purposes. In this study, we perform the first exploratory analysis of PERG features outside typical time domain markers (P50, N95), and use time-frequency measures from Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in normal controls as well as a collection of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). For DWT analysis, the Haar wavelet was selected as the mother wavelet due to its ab

Quantitative feature analysis of continuous analytic wavelet transforms of electrocardiography and electromyography.

Theoretical and practical advances in time-frequency analysis, in general, and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT), in particular, have increased over the last two decades. Although the Morlet wavelet has been the default choice for wavelet analysis, a new family of analytic wavelets, known as generalized Morse wavelets, which subsume several other analytic wavelet families, have been increasingly employed due to their time and frequency localization benefits and their utility in isolating and extracting quantifiable features in the time-frequency domain. The current paper describes two pra

Wavelet coherence analysis of dynamic cerebral autoregulation in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Cerebral autoregulation represents the physiological mechanisms that keep brain perfusion relatively constant in the face of changes in blood pressure and thus plays an essential role in normal brain function. This study assessed cerebral autoregulation in nine newborns with moderate-to-severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). These neonates received hypothermic therapy during the first 72 h of life while mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cerebral tissue oxygenation saturation (SctO2) were continuously recorded. Wavelet coherence analysis, which is a time-frequency domain approach, was use

Spike detection in the preterm fetal sheep EEG using Haar wavelet analysis.

Perinatal hypoxia is a significant cause of brain injury in preterm infants. Neuroprotective treatments have proven beneficial when commenced within 6-8 hours post hypoxic-ischemic insult. However, as the exact time of injury is unknown, there are no current means to determine which infants are in the treatment phase of the evolving injury. Recent studies suggest epileptiform transients in the first 6-8 hours are predictive of outcome. To quantify this further an automated means of transient identification is required. In this paper we describe a method using Haar wavelets to detect spikes in

Time-frequency analysis of phonocardiogram signals using wavelet transform: a comparative study.

Analysis of phonocardiogram (PCG) signals provides a non-invasive means to determine the abnormalities caused by cardiovascular system pathology. In general, time-frequency representation (TFR) methods are used to study the PCG signal because it is one of the non-stationary bio-signals. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is especially suitable for the analysis of non-stationary signals and to obtain the TFR, due to its high resolution, both in time and in frequency and has recently become a favourite tool. It decomposes a signal in terms of elementary contributions called wavelets, which a

Nonlinear analysis of heart murmurs using wavelet-based higher-order spectral parameters.

The aim of this study was to reveal and analyze the nonlinear characteristics of heart sounds, reflected in the quadrature phase coupling of the contained frequencies, as they evolve over time. To achieve this, the continuous wavelet transform was combined with third-order statistics/spectra in order to analyze their non Gaussian character, taking into account their non-stationarity. Heart sounds from patients with several pathologies that exhibit murmurs were drawn from a heart sound database and analyzed in the time-bi-frequency domain. The analysis results justified the efficient performanc

Predicting sleep apnoea syndrome from heart period: a time-frequency wavelet analysis.

Heart rate fluctuations are a typical finding during obstructive sleep apnoea, characterised by bradycardia during the apnoeic phase and tachycardia at the restoration of ventilation. In this study, a time-frequency domain analysis of the nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated as the single diagnostic marker for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). The predictive accuracy of time-frequency HRV variables (wavelet (Wv) decomposition parameters from level 2 (Wv2) to level 256 (Wv256)) obtained from nocturnal electrocardiogram Holter monitoring were analysed in 147 consecutive p

Scaling behaviour of heartbeat intervals obtained by wavelet-based time-series analysis.

Biological time-series analysis is used to identify hidden dynamical patterns which could yield important insights into underlying physiological mechanisms. Such analysis is complicated by the fact that biological signals are typically both highly irregular and non-stationary, that is, their statistical character changes slowly or intermittently as a result of variations in background influences. Previous statistical analyses of heartbeat dynamics have identified long-range correlations and power-law scaling in the normal heartbeat, but not the phase interactions between the different frequenc

Cross-wavelet analysis allows obtaining high temporal and frequency resolution in heart rate synchrony analysis.

Interpersonal synchrony, the temporal correspondence of repeated behavioral, physiological, or neural measures between individuals, has been analyzed using a variety of different methods. However, the analysis method needs to be carefully chosen to ensure an adequate interpretation of the results. Here, we suggest using cross-wavelet power for interpersonal synchrony analysis due to several advantages. We demonstrate the proposed method using the example of heart rate synchrony. In cross-wavelet power analysis, synchrony is determined per frequency band and time point, allowing for both fine-g

Multiresolution wavelet analysis for efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals.

Increased inter-equipment connectivity coupled with advances in Web technology allows ever escalating amounts of physiological data to be produced, far too much to be displayed adequately on a single computer screen. The consequence is that large quantities of insignificant data will be transmitted and reviewed. This carries an increased risk of overlooking vitally important transients. This paper describes a technique to provide an integrated solution based on a single algorithm for the efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals with infrequent short

Time series analysis of malaria in pregnancy, using wavelet and SARIMAX models.

Malaria in pregnancy (MIP) remains a global health challenge, affecting approximately 40% of pregnant women. Despite malaria control efforts by the Nigerian Government and its partners, regional disparities in health outcomes and malaria incidence trends among pregnant women remain under-studied. This study objectives were to assess MIP variability compared to general malaria cases, and forecast short-term MIP incidence over two years. This was achieved by analyzing malaria in pregnancy (MIP) variability across Nigeria from January 2015 to January 2025, using wavelet coherence, patterns of tra

Analysis of Wavelet Coherence in Calf Agonist-Antagonist Muscles during Dynamic Fatigue.

Dynamic muscle fatigue during repetitive movements can lead to changes in communication between the central nervous system and peripheral muscles. This study investigated these changes by examining electromyogram (EMG) characteristics from agonist and antagonist muscles during a fatiguing task. Twenty-two healthy male university students (age: 22.92 ± 2.19 years) performed heel raises until fatigue. EMG signals from lateral gastrocnemius (GL) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles were processed using synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SST). Root mean square (RMS), mean frequency (MF), power acros
