Cuticular waxes from ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.): analysis of high-molecular-weight esters.

Soluble waxes were extracted from the cuticle of ivy (Hedera helix L.) leaves with dichloromethane in a yield of ca. 13%. The cuticular waxes were directly analysed by GC-MS, high-temperature GC-MS and ESI-MS/MS. The GC-MS analysis showed mostly n-alkanols (45.3%), monoacids (18.8%), triterpenes (9.7%), n-aldehydes (8.7%) and n-alkanes (7.7%). The high-temperature GC-MS and the ESI-MS/MS analyses showed the presence of ester waxes, namely alkyl alkanoates and alkyl coumarates. Alkyl alkanoates comprised esters of the hexadecanoic acid with n-alkanols ranging from C16 to C34. Alkyl coumarates i

Effect of leaf surface waxes on leaf colonization by Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis.

To evaluate the influence of leaf cuticular waxes on bacterial colonization of leaves, bacterial colonization patterns were examined on four glossy maize (Zea mays L.) mutants that were altered in their cuticular wax biosynthesis. Mutant gl3 was indistinguishable from the wild-type maize in its ability to foster colonization by the two bacterial species, Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis. In contrast, the other three mutants supported the development of populations that significantly differed in size from those on the wild type. Mutant gl5 gl20 supported sma

[Waxing and waning pulmonary nodules and cavities].

We reported a case of vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome presenting with recurrent pulmonary hemorrhage. A 22-year-old man was admitted for intermittent hemoptysis and chest pain during the past 18 months. Computed tomography of chest showed bilateral nodules and cavities with halo sign. Inflammatory markers, including erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C reactive protein and interleukin 6, were within normal range. The microbiological and pathological examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy failed to draw a diagnosis. The pulmonary lesions waxed and waned

An Unusual Complication of Bone Wax Utilization.

Bone wax is a commonly used hemostatic agent with minimal complications. Some of the known complications include inflammation, granuloma formation, infection, and impaired osteogenesis. Several clinical reports of bone wax migration have also been reported. In this paper, the authors present a rare patient of bone wax migration intracranially in a 6-year-old patient who initially underwent craniotomy for the evacuation of subdural hematoma and repair of depressed skull fracture. The patient then underwent craniotomy scalp scar revision several months later. Postoperatively he developed short-t

Ear drops for the removal of ear wax.

BACKGROUND: Ear wax (cerumen) is a normal bodily secretion that can become a problem when it obstructs the ear canal. Symptoms attributed to wax (such as deafness and pain) are among the commonest reasons for patients to present to primary care with ear trouble.Wax is part of the ear's self-cleaning mechanism and is usually naturally expelled from the ear canal without causing problems. When this mechanism fails, wax is retained in the canal and may become impacted; interventions to encourage its removal may then be needed. Application of ear drops is one of these methods. Liquids used to remo

Hearing loss due to wax impaction.

BACKGROUND: Deafness and hearing impairment are major causes of disability in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out that much deafness and hearing impairment is avoidable or remediable. A good proportion of patients presenting in the Ear, Nose, Throat, Head and Neck (E,N,T,H &N) Surgery Clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH),Benin City, have ear wax impaction causing hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: This study was therefore carried out to determine the prevalence of wax impaction among the aetiological factors for hearing loss, the type and seve

Severe complications of a "Brazilian" bikini wax.

A 20-year-old Australian woman with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes presented with life-threatening Streptococcus pyogenes and Herpes simplex infection of her external genitalia following a routine perineal "Brazilian" bikini wax. Extensive pubic hair removal is now common among young adults in Australia and elsewhere. However, the infectious risks of these practices, particularly among immunosuppressed individuals, are often underappreciated.

Ingestion and aspiration of hot candle wax.

We present a toddler pre-alerted to our emergency department following hot candle wax ingestion and potential aspiration. He was stable but had a new continuous cough, hoarse voice, erythema and blistering around the oral cavity. Given the limited guidance on Toxbase and literature on candle wax ingestion and the risk of hydrocarbon pneumonitis from paraffin, a multidisciplinary team discussion occurred, and the child was electively intubated with a plan for bronchoscopy and endoscopy. Endoscopy revealed superficial ulceration at the distal oesophagus with clumps of wax in the stomach adherent

The dripping candle wax sign of melorheostosis.

Melorheostosis is a rare benign bone disease including dysostosis and sclerosis. Dripping candle wax presence is a common and typical sign of melorheostosis. This sign appears as irregular hyperostosis of the cortical bone which is likened to melted wax flowing down one side of a candle. It can sometimes cause pain, stiffness joint, or limitation of motion in the affected areas implicitly but mostly has no symptoms. It is usually observed on plain radiography; its appearance is generally hyperplasia on one side of the bone. We report a 33-year-old male who has an incidental diagnosis of melorh

Post waxing folliculitis: a clinicopathological evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Epilation by waxing is one of the common methods of removing unwanted body hair, and follicular papules following this cosmetic procedure are not uncommon. However, this not so uncommon problem has not been clinically and histopathologically evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathological profile of folliculitis temporally developing after epilation by waxing. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Clinical and histopathological evaluation was done in 28 patients who developed follicular papules within a period of eight weeks following a history of epilation by waxing over the same area. Is Bone-wax an injectable urologic material?

OBJECTIVE: Injection of endoscopic material for reflux and incontinence therapies became popular in urology because of its simplicity and repeatability. Research is going on to develop an ideal injectable material. In this experimental study we investigated whether the bone wax used for osteotomy hemostasis in orthopedic and neurosurgical operations could be used as an injectable material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 rabbits were included in the study: 6 underwent a sham operation, and in the remaining 14 rabbits, 0.5 ml bone wax liquefied with n-butyl acetic acid was injected submuc

[Pulmonary damage caused by ski waxing].

It is well known that inhalation of pyrolysis products of perfluorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. Teflon) may result in polymer-fume fever and even pulmonary oedema. A new type of ski wax has recently been introduced, a powder consisting of low-molecular perfluorinated hydrocarbons. We report a case history of a man who developed an attack of polymer-fume fever and pulmonary oedema after smoking cigarettes contaminated with this ski wax. Inhalation of vapour from ski waxes melted at low temperatures may also be harmful to the lungs.

Temperature and Pollinators Drive Evolutionary and Plastic Variation in Leaf and Petal Epicuticular Waxes.

Plants rely on epicuticular waxes to withstand stress and mediate interactions with other organisms, yet floral waxes remain largely unexplored despite their potential key role in reproduction. We examined how temperature and pollinators shaped leaf and petal waxes in Brassica rapa after six generations of experimental evolution under hot and ambient conditions with bumblebees (Bombus terrestris), Pieris rapae butterflies, acting as "pollinating herbivores" and also involving larval herbivory, or hand-pollination as a control. Leaves contained more wax but shorter aliphatic chains than petals.

The Relationships between Waxes and Storage Quality Indexes of Fruits of Three Plum Cultivars.

In the present study, the cuticular wax morphology, composition and the relationship with storage quality in three plum cultivars of Prunus salicina 'Kongxin' (KXL), Prunus salicina 'Fengtang' (FTL) and Prunus salicina 'Cuihong' (CHL) were investigated during storage at room temperature of 25 ± 1 °C. The results illustrated that the highest cuticular wax concentration was discovered in KXL, followed by FTL and the lowest in CHL. The fruit wax composition of the three plum cultivars was similar and principally composed of alkanes, alcohols, fatty acids, ketones, aldehydes, esters, triterpenes a

Chemical profiles of cuticular waxes on various organs of Sorghum bicolor and their antifungal activities.

Sorghum bicolor is widely cultivated in arid and semi-arid areas. This paper reports the chemical profiles of cuticular waxes on adaxial and abaxial sides of common leaf, flag leaf, sheath and stem from six sorghum cultivars and the variations of leaf cuticular waxes at seedling, jointing and filling stages. Then, the bioassay of leaf and sheath wax were evaluated against Penicillium sp and Alternaria alternata. The six sorghum cultivars had similar wax profiles. In total, eight wax compounds were identified, including fatty acids, aldehydes, primary alcohols, alkanes, secondary alcohols, keto

Extracellular lipids of Camelina sativa: characterization of chloroform-extractable waxes from aerial and subterranean surfaces.

Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz is an emerging low input, stress tolerant crop with seed oil composition suitable for biofuel and bioproduct production. The chemical compositions and ultrastructural features of surface waxes from C. sativa aerial cuticles, seeds, and roots were analyzed using gas chromatography and microscopy. Alkanes, primary fatty alcohols, and free fatty acids were common components of all analyzed organs. A particular feature of leaf waxes was the presence of alkyl esters of long-chain fatty acids and very long-chain fatty alcohols, ranging from C38 to C50 and dominated by C42
