Natural gum-based electronic ink with water-proofing self-healing and easy-cleaning properties for directly on-skin electronics.

On-skin electronic systems, which can facilitate noninvasive continuous acquisition of low-artifact physiological signals, are a promising technique for future wearable devices in healthcare. Inspired by the nature of Arabic gum (AG), we developed a costless, easy-to-prepare, easy-to-use, and environment-friendly electronic ink (E-ink) that can be used to construct multiform on-skin electronic systems through simple painting or stamping. In addition to its competitive electrical properties, the E-ink has the following advantages: waterproof (0.5 m/s water flushing for 10 s), self-healing (1.5

Soft and Stretchable Liquid Metal-Elastomer Composite for Wearable Electronics.

Soft devices, especially capacitive stress (or strain) sensors, are important for applications, including wearable medical monitoring, electronic skin, and soft robotics. The incorporation of liquid metal particles (LMPs) into highly deformable elastomers as inclusions ameliorates the mechanical compliance caused by a rigid filler. The high dielectric constant and liquid feature of LMPs are suitable for soft sensors with high sensitivity and a large real-time dynamic detection range. Here, a class of LM-elastomer composites are introduced with elastic and high dielectric properties, making the

Pushing OECTs toward Wearable: Development of a Miniaturized Analytical Control Unit for Wireless Device Characterization.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have emerged as a next-generation biosensing technology because of their water-stability, cost-effectiveness, and ability to obtain high sensitivity at low operation voltage (mV). However, a miniaturized readout unit that can wirelessly characterize the overall performance of an OECT is still missing, which hinders the assembling of truly wearable OECT systems for continuous health-monitoring applications. In this work, we present a coin-sized analytical unit for remote and wireless OECT characterization, namely, a personalized electronic reader for

Notch-insensitive, tough and self-healing conductive bacterial cellulose nanocomposite hydrogel for flexible wearable strain sensor.

To date, conductive hydrogels as an alternative to traditional rigid metallic conductors have attracted much attention in the field of flexible wearable electronic devices due to their inherent characteristics. Herein, a conductive bacterial cellulose (BC) nanocomposite hydrophobic-association (HA) hydrogel with highly stretchable, strong, self-healing, and notch-insensitive was fabricated by introducing the hydrophobic association. The obtained BCNC HA hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties (∼ 2400 % of stress and ∼ 0.35 MPa of mechanical strength), superior notch-insensitive property

Evaluating the effectiveness of an active strap for wearable robot: A Mechanical and Physiological Study.

Straps are the most commonly used elements in the wearable robotic field, where it is employed as a physical human robot interface (pHRI) between the wearable robot and wearer's body. The main role of the strap is to transmit power from the robot to the wearer by pressing and attaching onto specific body parts to reduce the relative motion. To maximize the efficiency and performance using the appropriate function, a high stiffness and tension is required in the strap. However, the continuous force applied by the strap on the wearer's body is one of the main factors that reduces the wearing com

An ultrathin gas-permeable imperceptible electronic skin enables maxillofacial electrophysiological monitoring.

Maxillofacial electromyographic (EMG) signals serve as crucial indirect indicators of occlusal function, playing a significant role in clinical oral diagnosis. However, conventional gel electrodes with occlusive nature induce skin irritation and wearer discomfort, which limits long-term monitoring. Here, we developed an ultrathin, gas-permeable, and flexible electronic skin (e-skin) designed for imperceptible, long-term maxillofacial EMG monitoring. This e-skin comprises a stretchable substrate formed by core-shell elastic fibers fabricated via coaxial electrospinning, coated with PEDOT:PSS@MX

Kinetically Tuning the Structural Assembly of Silk Fibroin for Highly Piezoelectric Wearable Sensors.

To overcome the challenges of extended processing and filler dependency for performance enhancement in pure silk fibroin (SF) piezoelectric devices, this study introduces a regeneration-free, integrated dissolution-spinning-crystallization strategy. This approach effectively enhances the intrinsic piezoelectric potential of SF by controlling the conformational rearrangement of its molecular chains and promoting the formation of ordered β-sheet crystal structures. Uniform nanofibers were fabricated under optimized conditions (6 wt % CaCl2, 18 wt % SF, and 19 kV). A subsequent treatment with 90%

A lignin-based multifunctional elastomer via facile fabrication for wearable strain sensors.

Elastomer-based electronics have the potential to maintain both electrochemical conductivity and mechanical properties simultaneously, paving the way for the development of stretchable sensors. However, creating sensors that are extremely stretchable, wearable, and highly sensitive remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present a novel fully bio-based multifunctional polymer (FPL/PTA) designed using thioctic acid (TA) and formaldehyde-protected lignin (FPL). The FPL serves as both a cross-linking agent and a free radical quenching agent. The FPL/PTA features an adaptive polymer netw

Diabetic foot prevention, assessment, and management using innovative smart wearable technology: a systematic review.

The diabetic foot (DF) is a chief culprit behind significant preventable morbidity and mortality in type-2-diabetes patients and the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-extremity amputations. Despite the clinically well-understood pathways to ulceration, including neuropathy, ischemia, and infection, DF continues to impose a significant health and economic burden on patients and healthcare systems. Recent technological developments in sensing, smart miniaturized wearable technology, and artificial intelligence provide ample options for viable solutions. A continuous monitoring wearable system

An Analysis of Fluid Intake Assessment Approaches for Fluid Intake Monitoring System.

Monitoring fluid intake is essential to help people manage their individual fluid intake behaviors and achieve adequate hydration. Previous studies of fluid intake assessment approaches based on inertial sensors can be categorized into wrist-worn-based and smart-container-based approaches. This study aims to analyze wrist-worn-based and smart-container-based fluid intake assessment approaches using inertial sensors. The comparison of these two approaches should be analyzed according to gesture recognition and volume estimation. In addition, the influence of the fill level and sip size informat
