Cardiometabolic characteristics of weight cycling: results from a mid-South regional comprehensive health care system.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the unique clinical and cardiometabolic risk characteristics of weight-cyclers and identify differences between weight-cyclers and individuals with other weight-change trajectories. METHODS: A deidentified database of 1,428,204 Vanderbilt University Medical Center patients from 1997 to 2020 was included based on having ≥5 years of recorded weights. Patients with a history of malignant neoplasm, bariatric surgery, implausible BMI (e.g., <15 or >80 kg/m2), or missing documented height were excluded, yielding 83,261 participants categorized

Affective temperaments and obesity: Is there an association with binge eating episodes and multiple weight cycling?

BACKGROUND: affective temperaments have been so far understudied in the field of obesity. Therefore, we aimed to assess affective temperaments in outpatients with obesity reporting symptoms of binge eating (BE) and multiple weight cycling (MWC) and to investigate the likelihood of an association between affective temperaments and risk of both conditions. METHODS: A total of 300 individuals with obesity seeking treatment at the Obesity Unit of an academic hospital were asked to complete self-report measures of affective temperaments, BE, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and quality of life. The effects of weight cycling on serum leptin levels and lipogenic enzyme activities in adipose tissue.

Weight cycling is one of the widely used weight reduction strategies; however, the adverse effects of this method include regaining significant amounts of weight. The molecular mechanisms underlying weight gain following cycles of dietary deprivation and refeeding are still poorly understood. One of the possibilities is that repeated loss and gain of weight may promote fat deposition in adipose tissue. To test this hypothesis we investigated serum leptin levels and lipogenic enzyme activities in white adipose tissue (WAT) of male Wistar rats during 12 days of ad libitum feeding following multi

Association of Weight Cycling with MRI-based Thigh Muscle Quality and Knee-adjacent Obesity: Osteoarthritis Initiative Data.

Background Repeated episodes of weight loss and regain, termed "weight cycling," may be associated with sarcopenia. Purpose To compare 48-month changes in MRI-based thigh muscle volume, proportion of intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), and knee-adjacent subcutaneous adipose tissue (KaSAT) thickness between weight-stable weight cyclers and weight-stable noncyclers. Materials and Methods In this secondary analysis of Osteoarthritis Initiative data conducted from February 2004 to October 2015, participants with less than a 5% cumulative weight change from baseline to the 48-month follow-up were

Increased risk of diabetes development in individuals with weight cycling over 4 years: The Kangbuk Samsung Health study.

AIMS: Weight cycling is defined as cyclical loss and gain of weight and recent studies suggest deleterious effects of weight cycling on cardiometabolic health. We aimed to analyze the risk for diabetes development in association with weight cycling over 4 years of follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective study performed in 4,818 non-diabetic participants (mean age 43 years, 78.3% men) in a health screening program in whom serial health examinations were performed in 5 consecutive years from 2010 to 2014. Average successive variability of weight (ASVW) was defined by the amount of body weight chang

Intra-patient analysis of individual weight gain or loss between IVF cycles: cycle now and transfer later.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the impact of clinically significant weight change on outcomes related to IVF cycle performance? SUMMARY ANSWER: While individual weight loss did not significantly impact ovarian response to stimulation or other cycle outcome parameters in our study, some positive associations were found for individual weight gain. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The role of weight-change in patients undergoing IVF has been largely studied by comparing weight loss in different cohorts of patients stratified by a static BMI. Specifically, obesity has been extensively studied in relation to its

Psychological Determinants of the Weight Cycle: A Review of Perceived Stress and Self-Efficacy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Long-term weight maintenance remains a significant challenge in obesity management. Weight cycling, a common phenomenon in this process, is characterised not only by repeated weight loss and regain but also by an increased metabolic and psychological burden. Previous research has shown that perceived stress and self-efficacy may play a role in processes related to weight cycling, such as adherence to dietary patterns, behavioural regulation and long-term weight management. Therefore, this review aims to examine the potential roles of perceived stress and self-efficacy in the

Cardiac cycle weighted ΜQFR for the assessment of functional relevance of the myocardial bridge.

Myocardial bridging (MB) causes coronary artery compression in systole, potentially resulting in angina and arrhythmias. Stent implantation in patients with MB may offer short-term improvement of symptoms, but carries a high risk of restenosis. We present a symptomatic patient with MB who was assessed by a novel angiography-based functional index that incorporates both the diastolic and systolic phases of the heart cycle - termed "cardiac cycle weighted µQFR" (µQFRccw). In addition to the observed dynamic systolic narrowing of the left anterior descending artery (LAD), a fixed stenotic (athero

[Effects of body weight changes on menarche and menstrual cycles in a group of adolescents].

In Italian girls (7-17 years-old) the effects of body weight on the onset of menarche and on menstruation were studied on the basis of measurements performed in 86 normally developed healthy girls (group 1), in 5 girls affected by precocious puberty (group 2), and in 9 girls with delayed puberty (group 3). Height and weight were evaluated at menarche in all groups, as well as 2 years later in groups 2 and 3. The results were transferred on the graphs proposed by Frisch for the American girls: at menarche 20% of group 1 girls were out of range; in group 2 all girls were in range; 33% of group 3

TIME-RESTRICTED EATING IN MASLD: THE IMPERATIVE TO PRESERVE MUSCLE MASS AND PREVENT WEIGHT CYCLING FOR SUSTAINABLE CLINICAL BENEFIT.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Time-restricted eating (TRE) and calorie restriction (CR) are effective lifestyle interventions for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). However, sarcopenia and weight cycling remain underappreciated threats that may offset their long-term benefits. This short communication reviews current evidence and clinical implications of these challenges. METHODS: Sarcopenia, prevalent in MASLD, aggravates insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and fibrosis progression. Recent randomized controlled trials, including Oh et al., reported significa

Cycled light in the intensive care unit for preterm and low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm and low birth weight infants are at an early stage of development, and do not receive adequate maternal circadian signals. They are often cared for over prolonged periods of hospitalisation in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), where environmental circadian stimuli are lacking. Exposure to artificial light-dark cycles may stimulate the development of the circadian system and improve clinical outcomes. However, it remains uncertain whether cycled light (CL) is preferable to near darkness (ND) or continuous bright light (CBL) in fostering development and maturation, and re

Naltrexone treatment restores menstrual cycles in patients with weight loss-related amenorrhea.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the efficacy of naltrexone administration in patients with hypothalamic amenorrhea correlates to the response to an acute naloxone test. DESIGN: Thirty patients with hypothalamic amenorrhea associated with weight loss were studied. After naloxone test (4 mg in bolus IV) patients were divided into two groups: group A, nonresponsive (n = 15) and group B, responsive (n = 15). Group A underwent two cycles of hormonal replacement therapy with E2 patches and medroxyprogesterone acetate. Then all patients were administered naltrexone at the dosage 50 mg/d orally for 6

On the dependence of the cardiac motion artifact on the breathing cycle in liver diffusion-weighted imaging.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the cardiac motion artifact that regularly appears in diffusion-weighted imaging of the left liver lobe might be reduced by acquiring images in inspiration, when the coupling between heart and liver might be minimal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 43 patients with known or suspected focal liver lesions were examined at 1.5 T with breath hold acquisition, once in inspiration and once in expiration. Data were acquired with a diffusion-weighted echo planar imaging sequence and two b-values (b50 = 50 s/mm² and b800 = 800 s/mm²). The severity o

[Vomiting associated with weight stagnation and convulsions: urea cycle disorder should be suspected].

In some inherited metabolic diseases, in particular in urea cycle disorders, which are usually diagnosed in neonatal period or in childhood, vomiting is often the first symptom. We report a case of late revelation of urea cycle disorder in a 13 years old female patient hospitalized for convulsions and failure to thrive. The patient underwent an interview revealing chronic vomiting associated with behavioral disorders, ideomotor slowdown and headaches. Clinical examination showed ataxia. Lumbar puncture and head CT scan were normal. The patient had substantially elevated blood ammonia level at

Long-term effects of medical management on growth and weight in individuals with urea cycle disorders.

Low protein diet and sodium or glycerol phenylbutyrate, two pillars of recommended long-term therapy of individuals with urea cycle disorders (UCDs), involve the risk of iatrogenic growth failure. Limited evidence-based studies hamper our knowledge on the long-term effects of the proposed medical management in individuals with UCDs. We studied the impact of medical management on growth and weight development in 307 individuals longitudinally followed by the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium (UCDC) and the European registry and network for Intoxication type Metabolic Diseases (E-IMD). The effects of ovarian hormones and emotional eating on changes in weight preoccupation across the menstrual cycle.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that fluctuations in ovarian hormones (i.e., estradiol and progesterone) predict the changes in binge eating and emotional eating across the menstrual cycle. However, the extent to which other eating disorder symptoms fluctuate across the menstrual cycle and are influenced by ovarian hormones remains largely unknown. This study sought to examine whether the levels of weight preoccupation vary across the menstrual cycle and whether the changes in ovarian hormones and/or other factors (i.e., emotional eating and negative affect) account for menstrual cycle
