Longitudinal concomitants of incorrect weight perception in female and male adolescents.

The aim of the present study was to analyse the longitudinal concomitants of incorrect weight perception, depressive symptoms, social anxiety, self-esteem, and eating disorders in adolescents. A prospective follow-up study on 283 female and 312 male adolescents aged 15 comprising questionnaires directed at the whole study population and subsequent personal interviews with adolescents found to be screen-positive for eating disorders, at both baseline and three-year follow-up. Body mass index was combined with weight perception to classify adolescents with incorrect weight perception. Twenty-nin

Body weight perception among high school students and its influence on weight management behaviors in normal weight students: a cross-sectional study.

AIM: This study investigates body weight perception and its influence on weight management behaviors in normal weight adolescents in Timis County, Romania. We hypothesized that misperception of overweight in normal weight adolescents would be positively associated with unhealthy weight control behaviors. METHODS: From 2908 respondents participating in the survey we selected a total of 2093 normal weight high school students for the analysis. Outcome measures included self-reported height and weight measurements, overweight misperceptions and weight control behaviors. Weighted prevalence estim

Nurses' Perceptions of Weight Gain and Obesity in the Prison Environment.

This study aimed to improve understanding of obesity in prison by investigating prison nurses' perceptions of weight gain and obesity. In-depth semistructured interviews were carried out with 17 nurses who worked in two male prisons in the United Kingdom. Nurses identified a variety of factors that they believed contributed to obesity and weight gain in the prison setting. These included factors caused by prisoner behavior, such as poor food choices and sedentary lifestyle. Factors influenced by the prison environment, such as stress of imprisonment, prison regime, and prison culture, were als

Partial Arm Weight Support Does Not Hamper the Weight Perception of Haptically-Rendered Virtual Objects: A Psychophysics Study.

Arm weight support (AWS) from upper-limb exoskeletons aids training by reducing fatigue and increasing the movement workspace, especially in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Simultaneously, task-specific training could be enabled via haptic rendering, simulating the interaction forces with tangible virtual objects. However, how AWS affects somatosensory perception, such as the perception of the weight of haptically rendered virtual objects, is unclear. We therefore conducted a psychophysics experiment with 40 participants investigating the effect of partial AWS on virtual object weight

Instilling the perception of weight in augmented reality using minimal haptic feedback.

Humans perceive gravitational forces on their surroundings through a mix of visual and sensorimotor cues. The accurate presentation of such cues is a difficult task in Mixed/Augmented Reality (MR/AR), technological paradigms that blend physical and virtual elements to enhance the way we interact with our environment. Realistically perceiving the weight of virtual elements within a MR/AR scenario aids in the embodiment of those elements within the user's reality, further blurring the lines between what is real and virtual. Unfortunately, current force feedback devices are not designed for or ar

Distorted weight perception correlates with disordered eating attitudes in Kuwaiti college women.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the presence of disordered eating attitudes and weight perception among young women at body mass index (BMI) values that correspond to underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese weight status. METHOD: Data were collected from 1,147 female undergraduate students (89% Kuwaiti nationals) recruited from Kuwait University through employment of the eating attitude test (EAT-26) together with an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire to determine the prevalence of symptomatology indicative of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. RESULTS: The mean EAT-26 scores

Impact of Maternal Infant Weight Perception on Infant Feeding and Dietary Intake.

Introduction Obesity is a global problem that is challenging to prevent and expensive to treat. Early childhood interventions show promise in establishing lifelong healthy eating patterns, however a better understanding of how parental feeding practices develop is needed. The study aimed to investigate maternal perception of infant weight and its relationship to feeding practices and infant dietary intake. Methods A questionnaire was completed by 263 Queensland mothers of infants aged between 5 and 13 months. Logistic regression was used to describe the association between maternal feeding pra

The Weight of the Number: Perceptions and Practices Surrounding Expected Body Weight Disclosure in Eating Disorder Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Expected body weight (EBW) determination is common in eating disorder (ED) treatment, yet no evidence-based guidelines exist for how to discuss EBWs with patients. Clinicians have previously conceptualized these discussions as therapeutic exposures targeting fear of weight gain. This study examined clinician and patient perceptions of EBW discussions, factors associated with these perceptions, and clinician practices regarding disclosure of EBWs. METHOD: ED clinicians (N = 158) and patients (N = 46) rated their perceptions (anxiety, difficulty, benefit, and willingness) on Likert s

Perceptions of weight and attitudes toward eating in early adolescent girls.

Sixth grade girls (n = 206) responded to questions about their weight, body image, dieting practices, and attitudes toward weight and eating. Results suggested that feeling too fat and wishing to lose weight were becoming normative for young adolescent girls in that the majority of girls wished to weigh less and said that they dieted at least occasionally. For most girls, weight concerns had emerged between the ages of 9 to 11. A sizeable proportion of girls seemed to have adopted a "dieting mentality," claiming to be avoiding fat, counting calories, thinking excessively about food, feeling gu

Parental Perceptions of Weight Status in Preterm Compared with Term Infants.

Background Parents of overweight children frequently under-recognize their child's overweight status. We hypothesized that parents of preterm children would be more likely than parents of term children to incorrectly perceive their child's weight. Methods We recruited parents of term and preterm when children were 2 months to 2 years of age. Small for gestational age infants were excluded. We compared parents' perceived weight category with child's actual weight category, based on normative data (underweight, normal weight, or overweight). We based analyses on encounters and adjusted for withi

Asperuloside Enhances Taste Perception and Prevents Weight Gain in High-Fat Fed Mice.

Asperuloside is an iridoid glycoside found in many medicinal plants that has produced promising anti-obesity results in animal models. In previous studies, three months of asperuloside administration reduced food intake, body weight, and adipose masses in rats consuming a high fat diet (HFD). However, the mechanisms by which asperuloside exerts its anti-obesity properties were not clarified. Here, we investigated homeostatic and nutrient-sensing mechanisms regulating food intake in mice consuming HFD. We confirmed the anti-obesity properties of asperuloside and, importantly, we identified some

Medication adherence and subjective weight perception in patients with first-episode psychotic disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Medication adherence is critical to the management of psychotic disorder. Different factors associated with medication adherence have been investigated in previous studies. However, the association with subjective weight perception, which is related to the weight gain side effect of antipsychotics, has not been thoroughly investigated. Subjective weight perception may not equal objective weight status. This study tests the hypothesis that medication adherence is related to subjective weight perception in a group of patients with first-episode psychotic disorder who have taken ant

Interparental conflict and gender moderate the prospective link between parents' perceptions of adolescents' weight and weight concerns.

OBJECTIVE: Parents' comments about their adolescents' weight have been linked with adolescents' disordered eating, but we know little about the personal and contextual conditions that promote or mitigate the effects of parents' perceptions on adolescents' weight concerns. This study examined whether the prospective association between parents' perceptions of adolescents' weight and adolescents' weight concerns differed as a function of exposure to interparental conflict or adolescent gender. METHOD: Participants were 386 adolescents (52% female; ages 11-18 years; predominately Caucasian/Europ

Accuracy of Mothers' Perception of Birth Size to Predict Birth Weight Data in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of child health and wellbeing. However, in many countries, decisions regarding care and treatment are often based on mothers' perceptions of their children's birth size due to a lack of objective birth weight data. Additionally, birth weight data that is self-reported or recorded often encounters the issue of heaping. This study assesses the concordance between the perceived birth size and the reported or recorded birth weight. We also investigate how the presence of heaped birth weight data affects this concordance

Racial differences in weight perception among Black and White women diagnosed with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Black women are more likely than White women to have obesity, and obesity is associated with worse breast cancer prognosis. Weight perception, however, has not been studied as a potential mediator of obesity disparities in women with breast cancer. In this study, we sought to describe racial differences and the association of lifestyle factors with weight perception. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study design, Black and White women with a new primary breast cancer were surveyed about socio-demographics, weight perception, diet, and exercise habits. Height and weight were measured

Agreement between parental perception of child weight status and actual weight status is similar across different ethnic groups in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION Accurate parental perception of their child's weight is poor. Accuracy may be influenced by differences in ethnicity but this is currently unknown. AIM To determine whether agreement between parental perception of child weight status and actual child weight status differs according to ethnic group (NZ European, Māori, Pacific, Asian), and to investigate whether it is influenced by various demographic and behavioural factors. METHODS A total of 1093 children (4-8 years old) attended a weight screening initiative. Parents completed questionnaires on demographics, beliefs about child

Motion perception and biological motion processing in adults born with extremely low birth weight.

Individuals born with extremely low birth weight (ELBW, ≤ 1000 g) are at increased risk for long-term visual perceptual difficulties. Biological motion processing enables processing of animate and socially relevant movement. Studies of children born very preterm have found deficits in biological motion processing, but this has not previously been studied in adults born with ELBW. We compared biological and scrambled motion processing between ELBW and full-term controls and related motion processing with early neurodevelopmental level. Thirty-eight adults born ELBW and 29 controls from a region

Neural differences in self-perception during illness and after weight-recovery in anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe mental illness characterized by problems with self-perception. Whole-brain neural activations in healthy women, women with AN and women in long-term weight recovery following AN were compared using two functional magnetic resonance imaging tasks probing different aspects of self-perception. The Social Identity-V2 task involved consideration about oneself and others using socially descriptive adjectives. Both the ill and weight-recovered women with AN engaged medial prefrontal cortex less than healthy women for self-relevant cognitions, a potential biological t

Pregnancy and weight gain: a scoping review of women's perceptions and experiences with stigma.

BACKGROUND: Weight stigma can impact any woman who considers herself as overweight, regardless of BMI. Pregnant women are at risk of experiencing stigma related to weight which harm their physical and mental health. To support and guide on healthy weight gain during pregnancy, it is important to explore women's perceptions and experiences of weight related stigma. This can inform programs and policies to improve maternal and child health outcomes. A scoping review on this issue will provide valuable insights, identify gaps in current research, and establish a foundation for informed interventi
