Combined Endurance and Strength or Only Endurance Training? Effects of Training Mode on Neuromuscular Characteristics and Functional Abilities in Obese Adolescent Girls Enrolled in a Weight-Reduction Program.

The aim of the present study was to examine whether combining strength and endurance training would promote better improvements in neuromuscular characteristics and functional abilities than endurance training alone in obese adolescent girls enrolled in a weight-reduction program. Twenty-four obese adolescent girls (12-15 years) volunteered to participate in a 9-month training program. Participants were allocated into two groups following either (i) combined training (endurance + strength; E+ST) or (ii) endurance training (ET) program. Absolute and specific maximal torque, muscle size, and max

Whole-body vibration administered during a 3-week in-hospital multidisciplinary body weight reduction program increases resting energy expenditure in obese adolescents, a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric obesity is a growing global health concern, and interventions aimed at increasing resting energy expenditure (REE) have gained attention as complementary strategies to dietary restriction. Whole-body vibration (WBV), an innovative exercise mimetic, may offer metabolic and functional benefits, particularly in populations with limited exercise tolerance. This study was a randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effects of incorporating WBV into a 3-week in-hospital multidisciplinary body weight reduction program (BWRP) in male adolescents with obesity. METHODS: Twen

Involving community members in designing behavioural weight management programmes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Involving community members when developing health programmes can improve intervention outcomes. We undertook a scoping review to describe how community members contributed to the development of Behavioural Weight Management Programmes (BWMPs). Different terms have been used to describe this process, including co-design, co-production, Community-Based Participatory Research, or Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement. Our aim was to describe: (1) at what stage(s) communities were involved (e.g. planning, delivering and/or evaluating); (2) what level of involvement they had (e

Change in obesity-related metabolic abnormalities associated with body mass index improvement through life-style intervention: A meta-regression.

The reduction in body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) associated with improvement in biomarkers relating to metabolic health in obese children is unknown. We aimed to establish the change in BMI-SDS associated with improved inflammation, liver function, and insulin resistance to inform clinical guidelines for pediatric weight management interventions and to assess the efficacy of future trials. A large-scale systematic review was conducted to identify relevant studies. Studies of children with a diagnosis of obesity according to defined BMI thresholds, participating in lifestyle

Furthering Scientific Inquiry for Weight Loss Maintenance: Assessing the Psychological Processes Impacted by a Low intensity Technology-Assisted Intervention (NULevel Trial).

BACKGROUND: NULevel was a randomized control trial to evaluate a technology-assisted weight loss maintenance (WLM) program in the UK. The program included: (a) a face-to-face goal-setting session; (b) an internet platform, a pedometer, and wirelessly connected scales to monitor and report diet, physical activity, and weight, and; (c) regular automated feedback delivered by mobile phone, tailored to participants' progress. Components were designed to target psychological processes linked to weight-related behavior. Though intervention participants showed increased physical activity, there was n

Obesity in the global haemophilia population: prevalence, implications and expert opinions for weight management.

Overweight and obesity may carry a significant disease burden for patients with haemophilia (PWH), who experience reduced mobility due to joint inflammation, muscle dysfunction and haemophilic arthropathy. This review aimed to define the prevalence and clinical impact of overweight/obesity in the global population of PWH. A detailed literature search pertaining to overweight/obesity in haemophilia in the last 15 years (2003-2018) was conducted, followed by a meta-analysis of epidemiological data. The estimated pooled prevalence of overweight/obesity in European and North American PWH was 31%.

The reciprocal interaction between obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Obesity is a significant risk factor in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) altering airway anatomy and collapsibility, and respiratory control. The association between obesity and OSA has led to an increasing focus on the role of weight loss as a potential treatment for OSA. To date, most discussion of obesity and OSA assumes a one-way cause and effect relationship, with obesity contributing to the pathogenesis of OSA. However, OSA itself may contribute to the development of obesity. OSA has a potential role in the development and reinforcement of obesity via changes to energy

A systematic review and qualitative synthesis of weight management interventions for people with spinal cord injury.

People with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at greater risk of developing obesity and related co-morbidities than those without SCI. The objectives of this systematic review were to examine the effectiveness of weight management interventions for people with SCI and to synthesize the experiences of people involved with SCI weight management (e.g., SCI healthcare professionals and caregivers). Five databases were searched (up to July 31, 2023) and 5,491 potentially eligible articles were identified. Following screening, 22 articles were included, comprising 562 adults. There was considerable heter

Association between Indicators of Inequality and Weight Change following a Behavioural Weight Loss Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Weight loss through behavioural weight management interventions can have important health benefits for people with obesity. However, to maximise the health benefits, weight loss must be maintained. Evidence suggests that behavioural weight loss interventions do not exacerbate inequalities in the short term. However, no study has yet considered whether inequalities exist in long-term weight change following intervention. We aimed to investigate if there are inequalities in weight change following weight loss intervention. METHODS: We conducted a cohort analysis of data from the W

Enhancing Weight Loss Programs: A Meta-Analysis of Financial Incentives and Behavior Change Techniques.

Obesity is a risk factor for chronic illness. Financial incentives contingent on behaviors or outcomes related to weight loss can promote weight loss efforts. This meta-analysis examines the added effect of financial incentives for weight loss in health behavior change interventions, both short- and long-term, in adults. Additionally, subgroup analyses explored incentive targets (physiological outcomes, lifestyle behaviors, process behaviors, or multiple targets) and types of behavior change techniques (BCTs; interactive or passive) as moderators. Seven databases were systematically searched f

Obesity in Cardiac Rehabilitation: Considerations in Offering Weight Management As Part of Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs.

Despite its relevance to cardiovascular health, obesity is rarely targeted during cardiac rehabilitation (CR). The objective of this paper was to review evidence regarding whether measures to address excess body fat should be offered as a standard component of CR for patients with obesity. We organize the paper around three themes: 1) outcomes of obesity management, 2) the complexity of obesity management, and 3) patient attitudes, experiences, and preferences. Our discussion of each theme was informed by a narrative literature review and a survey of Canadian CR healthcare providers (n=80). We

Tier 2 adult weight management services in the UK: A case study evaluation of local authority provision of targeted services for higher-risk groups in England.

In 2021, the UK Government announced additional funding in England for Adult Weight Management Services (AWMS); it was specified that the extra funding must be used to commission or extend existing tier 2 services. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities encouraged commissioners to prioritise services for higher-risk groups such as those with learning disabilities, severe mental illness, people from minority ethnic groups, those living in deprived areas and men. To better understand the findings from previous survey work and to explore the implementation of targeted services in great

The Northumberland Exercise Referral Scheme as a Universal Community Weight Management Programme: A Mixed Methods Exploration of Outcomes, Expectations and Experiences across a Social Gradient.

Exercise referral schemes (ERS) are internationally recognised, yet little attention has been paid to discrete referral groups or the influence of wider social determinants of health. The primary quantitative element of this mixed methods study used a mixed effects linear model to examine associations of sociodemographic predictors, obesity class and profession of referrer on weight and physical activity (PA) variables for weight-related referrals (n = 3624) to an established 24-week ERS. Chained equations modelling imputed missing data. The embedded qualitative element (n = 7) used individual

Practice nurse-supported weight self-management delivered within the national child immunisation programme for postnatal women: a feasibility cluster RCT.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a high-risk time for excessive weight gain. The rising prevalence of obesity in women, combined with excess weight gain during pregnancy, means that there are more women with obesity in the postnatal period. This can have adverse health consequences for women in later life and increases the health risks during subsequent pregnancies. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to produce evidence of whether or not a Phase III trial of a brief weight management intervention, in which postnatal women are encouraged by practice nurses as part of the national child immunisation progra

Identification of weight loss interventions for translation among endometrial cancer survivors: A RE-AIM analysis.

Interventions for obesity-related cancers that combine nutrition and physical activity for weight loss exist; however, their application to survivors of endometrial cancer is unknown. Furthermore, little is known about pre-implementation perceptions of existing programs from a variety of interested persons (physicians, researchers) who may be part of the implementation team. Adapting an existing intervention rather than developing a new intervention may speed the translational lag time as long as intervention characteristics and fit within the delivery system are considered during the planning
