Associations in filarial infections in man in the savanna zones of Mali and Upper Volta.

In 14 villages located in the West African savanna belt, 1,305 people were examined for microfilariae in blood and skin. The results indicate that the associations between filariae in infected patients are not the result of chance alone. The frequency of associations between Wuchereria bancrofti and Tetrapetalonema perstans was highly significant, whereas Onchocerca volvulus appeared to be associated with W. bancrofti only in the absence of T. perstans.

Exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) at Nigeria's petrol stations: a review of current status, challenges and future directions.

INTRODUCTION: In Nigeria, because of increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and auto-mobilization, petrol is the most everyday non-edible commodity, and it is the leading petroleum product traded at the proliferating Nigeria's petrol stations (NPSs). However, because of inadequate occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory measures, working at NPSs exposes petrol station workers (PSWs) to a large amount of hazardous benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds. METHODS: Studies on BTEX exposures among Nigerian PSWs are scarce. Thus, constraints in quantify

Tackling Ebola in Africa: a warning to the world.

The recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease killed more than 11,000 people in the West African countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. As the death toll in West Africa but also elsewhere rose, it became apparent that potentially infected patients could present to emergency departments across the world. An international response was needed to contain the disease and prevent its rapid spread. This article describes a British military-run treatment centre in Kerry Town, Sierra Leone, and discusses how standard nursing practices were adapted to manage this high-risk situation. It also highli

Criterion for inclusion in onchocerciasis control programmes based on ivermectin distribution.

Data on onchocercal lymphatic and skin lesions from 45 communities located in the West African savanna were analysed to determine if the criterion for inclusion in ivermectin mass treatment based on risk of onchocercal blindness needs to be modified. Only 16 cases of elephantiasis were reported among 10,108 people examined. Other lymphatic lesions were almost exclusively found in people older than 30 years living in villages at risk of onchocercal blindness. Permanent skin lesions also affected older people and were 3 times more frequent in villages at risk of onchocercal blindness. Papular ra

Non-cigarette Tobacco Use and Stroke Among West Africans: Evidence From the SIREN Study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cigarette tobacco (NCT) represents a form of tobacco use with a misperceived significance in chronic disease events. Whether NCT use is sufficient to promote stroke events, especially among Africans, is yet to be understood. This study assessed the relationship between NCT use and stroke among indigenous Africans. METHODS: A total of 7617 respondents (NCT users: 41 vs. non-NCT: 7576) from the Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Network (SIREN) study were included in the current analysis. NCT use was defined as self-reported use of smoked (cigars or piper) or smokel

The natural history of West Nile virus infection presenting with West Nile virus meningoencephalitis in a man with a prolonged illness: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Estimates indicate that West Nile virus infects approximately one and a half million people in the United States of America. Up to 1% may develop West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease, in which infected patients develop any combination of meningitis, encephalitis, or acute paralysis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old African-American man presented to our hospital with headache, restlessness, fever, myalgias, decreased appetite, and progressive confusion. A cerebrospinal fluid examination showed mild leukocytosis and an elevated protein level. Testing for routine infections was ne

Characteristics of African blood.

Genetic markers in people of African ancestry and tables comparing Africans and Europeans are compiled to illustrate the blood differences. The existence of the African genetic characters, R0 (cDe), D-u and Ee (e-s, ce-s) in an Rh-Hr system are discussed. The high incidence of R0 (81.9%) in Africans is evident. Studies of ABO and the sickle cell trait in East Africa reveal the African tribes responsible for the original populating of Africa. The pygmoids of Uganda and Zaire, the Nilotes of West Nile, and the Bantu of Uganda are possibly responsible. Subgroups of A antigen in Africans and Europ

Climate drives the meningitis epidemics onset in west Africa.

BACKGROUND: Every year West African countries within the Sahelo-Sudanian band are afflicted with major meningococcal meningitis (MCM) disease outbreaks, which affect up to 200,000 people, mainly young children, in one of the world's poorest regions. The timing of the epidemic year, which starts in February and ends in late May, and the spatial distribution of disease cases throughout the "Meningitis Belt" strongly indicate a close linkage between the life cycle of the causative agent of MCM and climate variability. However, mechanisms responsible for the observed patterns are still not clearly

Transmissibility of the monkeypox virus clades via respiratory transmission: investigation using the prairie dog-monkeypox virus challenge system.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is endemic within Africa where it sporadically is reported to cause outbreaks of human disease. In 2003, an outbreak of human MPXV occurred in the US after the importation of infected African rodents. Since the eradication of smallpox (caused by an orthopoxvirus (OPXV) related to MPXV) and cessation of routine smallpox vaccination (with the live OPXV vaccinia), there is an increasing population of people susceptible to OPXV diseases. Previous studies have shown that the prairie dog MPXV model is a functional animal model for the study of systemic human OPXV illness. Stud

COVID-19 in West Africa: regional resource mobilisation and allocation in the first year of the pandemic.

The world continues to battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Whereas many countries are currently experiencing the second wave of the outbreak; Africa, despite being the last continent to be affected by the virus, has not experienced as much devastation as other continents. For example, West Africa, with a population of 367 million people, had confirmed 412 178 cases of COVID-19 with 5363 deaths as of 14 March 2021; compared with the USA which had recorded almost 30 million cases and 530 000 deaths, despite having a slightly smaller population (328 million). Several postulations have been made

Incidence of symptomatic toxoplasma eye disease: aetiology and public health implications.

Ocular disease is the commonest disabling consequence of toxoplasma infection. Incidence and lifetime risk of ocular symptoms were determined by ascertaining affected patients in a population-based, active reporting study involving ophthalmologists serving a population of 7.4 million. Eighty-seven symptomatic episodes were attributed to toxoplasma infection. Bilateral visual acuity of 6/12 or less was found in seven episodes (8%) and was likely to have been transient in most cases. Black people born in West Africa had a 100-fold higher incidence of symptoms than white people born in Britain. O

Testing Modeling Assumptions in the West Africa Ebola Outbreak.

The Ebola virus in West Africa has infected almost 30,000 and killed over 11,000 people. Recent models of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have often made assumptions about how the disease spreads, such as uniform transmissibility and homogeneous mixing within a population. In this paper, we test whether these assumptions are necessarily correct, and offer simple solutions that may improve disease model accuracy. First, we use data and models of West African migration to show that EVD does not homogeneously mix, but spreads in a predictable manner. Next, we estimate the initial growth rate of EVD wit

Hyperdontia across sub-Saharan Africa: Prevalence, patterning, and implications.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperdontia data in modern and premodern sub-Saharan Africans are presented by region-West, Central, East, and South, and sex. Beyond describing the anomaly, comparisons are made with other world populations and future work is promoted. These findings may be useful to both dental clinicians and anthropologists. METHODS: Hyperdontia presence and patterning were recorded in 51 samples of skeletal dentitions and hardstone casts (n = 1916). Its infrequency prompted regional pooling after grouping by time. Only adults were included to record later forming fourth molars reportedly common

Mpox virus Clade IIb detection in the air.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease endemic in Central and West Africa that is caused by the Mpox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus and Poxviridae family. The clinical manifestations of mpox infection are milder than those of smallpox, and the incubation time of mpox varies from 5 to 21 days. Since May 2022, the mpox outbreak (formerly known as monkeypox) has suddenly and unexpectedly spread in non-endemic countries, suggesting that there may have been some undetected transmissions. Based on molecular analysis, there are two major genetic clades that represent the mpox virus: Clade

Has APOL1 kidney disease treatment been hiding in plain sight?

Two coding variants of APOL1 account for much of the excess risk of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in people of recent West African ancestry. There is an unmet need of treatment for apolipoprotein L1 kidney disease. In this issue, Sula Karreci et al. reported that lisinopril reduced proteinuria and glomerulosclerosis in a mouse model of apolipoprotein L1-induced focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, in a genotype-specific manner. By contrast, hydralazine and dapagliflozin had no effect. This study highlights the potential therapeutic utility of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor in apol

Deep sequencing of HIV-1 reveals extensive subtype variation and drug resistance after failure of first-line antiretroviral regimens in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Deep sequencing could improve understanding of HIV treatment failure and viral population dynamics. However, this tool is often inaccessible in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVES: To determine the genetic patterns of resistance emerging in West African HIV-1 subtypes during first-line virological failure, and the implications for future antiretroviral options. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were selected from a Nigerian cohort of people living with HIV who had failed first-line ART and subsequently switched to second-line therapy. Whole HIV-1 genome sequences were g

Differential West Nile fever ascertainment in the United States: a multilevel analysis.

We evaluated the completeness of West Nile fever (WNF) surveillance within the U.S. public health system. We surveyed laboratory and surveillance programs on policies, practices, and capacities for testing, confirmation, and reporting (collectively called ascertainment) from 2003 through 2005. We calculated syndrome ascertainment ratios by dividing WNF counts by neuroinvasive disease counts; separately, we performed multilevel modeling. Jurisdictions were more likely to ascertain at least one WNF cases per West Nile neuroinvasive disease case when ≤ 1 testing restrictions existed (odds ratio [
