Climate change influences coastal protection value of global wetlands.

Mangroves and salt marshes are effective buffers against storm waves, which are increasingly recognized as a Nature-based coastal protection measure. However, climate-driven alterations in nearshore extreme hydrodynamics (i.e., extreme wave climate and surge levels), compounded by human-induced constraints such as coastal development, may compromise these protective functions. The potential variations and impacts at a global scale remain uncertain. Here, we use global reanalysis data of wave, storm surge, and wetland distribution to quantify changes in wave attenuation by mangroves and salt ma

Bioaugmentation in treatment wetlands: Opportunities, challenges, and safety considerations.

Bioaugmentation has been increasingly applied to enhance pollutant removal in treatment wetlands (TWs). However, its wider implementation is still constrained by limited understanding of long-term performance stability and ecological safety. Here, this review synthesizes the current applications of microbial inoculation strategies, highlighting emerging opportunities, key challenges, and critical safety considerations for implementation. The potential avenues toward sustainable bioaugmentation are summarized. These include alternative nitrogen removal processes, multi-pathway elimination of em

Wetlands function as a nature-based microcystin remediation system.

As cyanobacterial blooms intensify globally, persistent microcystins (MCs) in surface waters present a growing water-quality challenge. Engineered solutions exist but are often costly and impractical for large-scale or natural settings. In contrast, wetlands, with their diverse microbial assemblages and habitats, offer a promising but underexplored pathway for MC removal. We tested this potential through in situ mesocosm experiments in two prairie wetlands; a hypereutrophic system receiving livestock and urban wastewater, and a less-impacted meso‑eutrophic site. Microcystin degradation was mea

[Distribution Characteristics of Mercury in Different Urban Constructed Wetlands].

To explore the spatial and temporal distribution and the methylation characteristics of mercury in different constructed wetlands in cities, and to understand the potential ecological exposure of mercury in urban wetlands, four artificial wetlands in Chongqing were studied from March 2017 to March 2018. The water samples were collected separately in four quarters, and the mass concentration of total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) was researched for one year. The results showed that the THg concentration in the four wetland waters is higher than the background value of the world's lake

Removal of nutrients in various types of constructed wetlands.

The processes that affect removal and retention of nitrogen during wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs) are manifold and include NH(3) volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial uptake, mineralization (ammonification), nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate-ammonification), anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX), fragmentation, sorption, desorption, burial, and leaching. However, only few processes ultimately remove total nitrogen from the wastewater while most processes just convert nitrogen to its various forms. Removal of total nitrog

Methylmercury hotspots in hybrid constructed wetlands: Mechanisms and controls.

Constructed wetlands (CWs), widely utilized for watershed water treatment, have the potential to intensify the production of methylmercury (MeHg) with high risks to wildlife and humans. However, MeHg production and its controlling factors in such artificial systems remain poorly understood, particularly the impacts of human interventions like subsurface flow CW (SSFCWs) and weirs. In this study, the hotspots and controlling mechanisms of MeHg production in a typical hybrid CW consisting of SSFCW and free water surface CW (FWSCW) were investigated. Despite 65.9% total mercury (THg) removal main

Trace metal transfer to passerines inhabiting wastewater treatment wetlands.

Wastewater treatment wetlands are cost-effective strategies for remediating trace metals in industrial effluent. However, biogeochemical exchange between wastewater treatment wetlands and adjacent environments provides opportunities for trace metals to cycle in surrounding ecosystems. The transfer of trace metals to wildlife inhabiting treatment wetlands must be considered when evaluating wetland success. Using passerine birds as bioindicators, we conducted a multi-tissue analysis to investigate the mobilization of zinc, copper, and lead derived from wastewater to terrestrial wildlife in treat

Vegetation controls on channel network complexity in coastal wetlands.

Channel networks are key to coastal wetland functioning and resilience under climate change. Vegetation affects sediment and hydrodynamics in many different ways, which calls for a coherent framework to explain how vegetation shapes channel network geometry and functioning. Here, we introduce an idealized model that shows how coastal wetland vegetation creates more complexly branching networks by increasing the ratio of channel incision versus topographic diffusion rates, thereby amplifying the channelization feedback that recursively incises finer-scale side-channels. This complexification tr

Detection of Brucella spp. in dogs at Pantanal wetlands.

Canine brucellosis is an infectious disease that produces reproductive disease in both males and females. Although Brucella canis is more common, the infection by Brucella abortus is more frequent in dogs sharing habitats with livestock and wild animals. We decided to investigate the role of dogs in the maintenance of Brucella spp. in the Pantanal wetland. Serum and whole blood samples were collected from 167 dogs. To detect antibodies against B. abortus and B. canis, buffered acidified plate antigen (BAPA) and agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) tests were performed. To detect Brucella spp., B. a

[Characteristics of phosphorus fractions in sediments of constructed wetlands].

In order to better understand phosphorus (P) cycle in wetland ecosystem, the characteristics of phosphorus fractions in sediments of Heituwa constructed wetland system were investigated using soil organic phosphorus (Po) fractionation scheme and 31P-NMR technology. The concentrations of TP, Pi, Po and soil organic matter were all increased along the flow direction. Four kinds of P-compounds (orthophosphate, orthophosphate monoesters, orthophosphate diesters, and pyrophosphate) were detected in the NMR spectrum. Orthophosphate and phosphate monoester accounted for the dominants position in sedi

Uranium Biogeochemistry in the Rhizosphere of a Contaminated Wetland.

The objective of this study was to determine if U sediment concentrations in a U-contaminated wetland located within the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, were greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere. U concentrations were as much as 1100% greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere fractions; however and importantly, not all paired samples followed this trend. Iron (but not C, N, or S) concentrations were significantly enriched in the rhizosphere. XAS analyses showed that in both sediment fractions, U existed as UO22+ coordinated with iron(III)-oxides and organic ma

Isomerization of chlortetracycline in prairie wetland water.

Chlortetracycline (CTC), an antimicrobial administered as a feed additive to cattle, swine, and poultry, is present in the corresponding manure. Land application of raw or processed (composted or stockpiled) manure provides a mechanism by which CTC (and other antimicrobials) enters the environment and becomes available for transport to surface receiving waters via rainfall or snowmelt runoff. Chlortetracycline has been detected in Canadian surface waters, but little has been reported on its fate in aquatic ecosystems. To address this knowledge gap, the dissipation of CTC-enol was monitored in

Mercury dynamics of a temperate forested wetland.

Wetlands have been identified as important sites of mercury methylation in catchments, but the range of wetland types and their geographic distribution for which methylmercury fluxes are reported in the literature are limited. Linkages among wetland hydrology, total mercury and methylmercury concentrations and fluxes, and other water quality parameters were assessed in a temperate forested swamp in Southern Ontario, Canada. Two hydrogeomorphically distinct stream reaches within the wetland exhibited differences in wetland-stream hydrologic connectivity, which strongly influenced mercury dynami

Distinct performance and mechanism of microbial fuel cells-constructed wetland and direct-enchanced constructed wetland for levofloxacin removal.

There is an urgent need to investigate the distinct performance and mechanism of traditional constructed wetland (CW), microbial fuel cells-constructed wetland (MFC-CW) and direct-enchanced constructed wetland (ECCW) for antibiotics removal. To address this issues, three kinds of CWs were bulit and distinct performance and mechanism for levofloxacin (LVFX) removal was expored in this study. MFCCW, ECCW achieved high LVFX removal efficiencies compared with traditional constructed wetland (96.0 % in MFCCW, 95.0 % in ECCW and 91.2 % in CW) and the biodegradation was the key contributor (90.7 %-95

Effects of alligator weed invasion on wetlands in protected areas: A case study of Lishui Jiulong National Wetland Park.

Wetlands are one of the ecosystems most easily and severely invaded by alien species. Biological invasions can have significant impacts on local plant communities and ecosystem functioning. While numerous studies have assessed the impacts of biological invasions on wetlands, relatively few have been conducted in protected areas such as national wetland parks. We conducted a field survey to investigate the effects of the invasive herb Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) on the productivity and structure of plant communities and soil microbial communities in the Lishui Jiulong National

Plant-derived carbon activates pyrite in tidal-flow constructed wetlands.

Pyrite-associated autotrophic denitrification is a promising approach for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal from low C/N wastewater, yet its practical application is severely constrained by surface passivation that progressively diminishes reactivity. Here, we propose and validate a coupled strategy integrating tidal flow operation, a plant-based sustained-release carbon source (Ac-BDPs), and pyrite in constructed wetlands to address this bottleneck. Rather than relying on simple material mixing, this system is designed to achieve spatiotemporal coordination of chemical interfacial

Fluvial avulsions influence soil fertility in the Pantanal wetlands (Brazil).

River avulsions drive important changes in the Pantanal wetlands, owing to their role in the hydro-sedimentology of the region. Although relevant to numerous ecosystem services, few studies have analyzed the influence of river avulsions on soil fertility in the Pantanal. Here, we use the largest ongoing avulsion in the Taquari River (Caronal region) to evaluate the effects on soil fertility, considering two factors: avulsion stage (1) and aquatic-terrestrial succession (2). Since both factors are influenced by macrophyte abundance, an incident map was created through tasseled cap indices from

Supporting constructed wetlands in P removal efficiency from surface water.

The research investigated the implementation of suspended reactive filters to support the phosphorus (P) removal efficiency of constructed wetlands (CWs). The reactive material (RM) used in this study was autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). The laboratory experiment consists of four plastic boxes filled with the volume of 10 L of artificial P solution with three variants of RM mass to volume ratio: 1:1 (g:L), 5:1 (g:L), 10:1 (g:L), and the blind probe 0:1 (g:L) as a reference. AAC of different weights (10, 50 and 100 g) was wrapped in a filter bag, put into boxes, and suspended. After 30 days o
