Investigating the effects of underwater noise from two vessels on the behaviour of short-finned pilot whales.

Multiple whale-watching vessels may operate around cetaceans at any one time, and targeted animals may experience underwater noise effects. We hypothesised that the cumulative noise of two vessels with low source levels (SLs) will elicit lower behavioural disturbance in short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) compared to a single vessel with a higher SL. We measured the behaviour of whales during 26 controls (stationary vessel >300 m) and 44 treatments off Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). Treatments consisted of vessel approaches mimicking whale-watch scenarios (distance ∼60 m,

High-precision isotopic analysis sheds new light on mercury metabolism in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas).

Whales accumulate mercury (Hg), but do not seem to show immediate evidence of toxic effects. Analysis of different tissues (liver, kidney, muscle) and biofluids (blood, milk) from a pod of stranded long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) showed accumulation of Hg as a function of age, with a significant decrease in the MeHg fraction. Isotopic analysis revealed remarkable differences between juvenile and adult whales. During the first period of life, Hg in the liver became isotopically lighter (δ202Hg decreased) with a strongly decreasing methylmercury (MeHg) fraction. We suggest this is

Intraspecific variation in the feeding habits of short-finned pilot whales based on blubber fatty acid profiles.

Understanding trophic interactions in deep-sea ecosystems is challenging and still largely unexplored. Here, fatty acid (FA) profiles were used as biochemical tracers to explore intraspecific feeding specialization in a deep-diving apex predator. The FA profiles of free-ranging short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) biopsies from two archipelagos (Canary Islands, n = 30; Madeira Island, n = 25) of the Macaronesia biogeographic region were determined to infer the dietary preferences, ecological adaptations, and population dynamics, considering geographic location, sex, and reside

Topography of vibration frequency responses on the bony tympano-periotic complex of the pilot whale Globicephala macrorhynchus.

In modern Cetacea, the ear bone complex comprises the tympanic and periotic bones forming the tympano-periotic complex (TPC), differing from temporal bone complexes of other mammals in form, construction, position, and possibly function. To elucidate its functioning in sound transmission, we studied the vibration response of 32 pairs of formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-fixed TPCs of Globicephala macrorhynchus, the short-finned pilot whale (legally obtained in Taiji, Japan). A piezoelectric-crystal-based vibrator was surgically attached to a location on the cochlea near the exit of the acoustic nerv

Prenatal and postnatal development of the cervical portion of the spine in the short-finned pilot whale Globicephala macrorhyncha.

Fusion of the cervical spine in Globicephala macrorhyncha is a prenatal rather than a postnatal phenomenon which encompasses all cervical vertebra. This results in a relatively short, nonarticulated, composite cervical spine in this particular species. Cervicothoracic spine segments removed from fetuses demonstrated complete fusion of all cervical vertebra commencing during early prenatal development. C1 and C2 initially developed as a composite central cartilaginous unit, although laterally there was some separation through rudimentary interzone formation. However, C3 through C7 formed indivi

Short-finned pilot whales modulate surfacing and breathing patterns more strongly in response to dives than in anticipation.

Diving marine mammals must allocate time between respiring at the surface and foraging underwater. Previous studies of optimal diving theory have attempted to predict such patterns, but the amount of time divers must spend at the surface before and after dives of varying durations remains difficult to assess. Here, we examined the surfacing and breathing patterns of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) from biologger data to examine their use of anticipatory versus reactive strategies. We used linear mixed-effects models to examine the effect of dive characteristics on surfac

Skull and Neck Lesions in a Long-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas): A Result of Ship Collision?

Necropsy on an adult male pilot whale stranded in Denmark in an area with heavy boat traffic revealed internal lesions in the head and neck region, while the exterior did not show any visible lesions. We found multiple fractured bones, muscle trauma and extensive hemorrhage including a fractured occipital bone with several fragments and bone pieces deeply embedded into the cerebrum of the brain. The brain was literally smashed while the third and partially fourth cervical vertebrae were almost pulverized surrounded by large amounts of blood and muscle contusion. The whale was likely killed due

First report of Brucella ceti-associated meningoencephalitis in a long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas.

Fatal Brucella ceti infection with histological lesions specific to the central nervous system has been described in only 3 species of cetaceans: striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, Atlantic white-sided dolphins Lagenorhynchus acutus and short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis. This paper describes the first report of a B. ceti-associated meningoencephalitis in a long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas, showing the increasing range of species susceptibility. Brucella was recovered in larger numbers from cerebrospinal fluid than from brain tissue and is the sample of choice for is

Spondylitic changes in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) stranded on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, between 1982 and 2000.

The primary bone pathology diagnoses recognized in cetacea are osteomyelitis and spondylosis deformans. In this study, we determined the prevalence, type, and severity of vertebral pathology in 52 pilot whales, a mass stranding species that stranded on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, between 1982 and 2000. Eleven whales (21%) had hyperostosis and ossification of tendon insertion points on and between vertebrae, chevron bones, and costovertebral joints, with multiple fused blocks of vertebrae. These lesions are typical of a group of interrelated diseases described in humans as spondyloarthropathies, s

Awareness, cultural importance, risk perception and consumption behavior - the issue of contaminants in pilot whales in the Faroe Islands.

Pilot whale has for centuries been part of the traditional diet in the Faroe Islands; however, since the late 1970s, concerns about contamination have resulted in ongoing dietary advisories. This cross-sectional survey examines consumption frequency, cultural importance, risk perception and awareness of contaminants and advisories related to pilot whale in the Faroese population among residents aged 18-70 years randomly selected from the Faroese Population Registry. In all 1,492 respondents were included in the final analysis. The results indicate that most participants consume pilot whale mea

Interspecific Hybridization in Pilot Whales and Asymmetric Genetic Introgression in Northern Globicephala melas under the Scenario of Global Warming.

Pilot whales are two cetacean species (Globicephala melas and G. macrorhynchus) whose distributions are correlated with water temperature and partially overlap in some areas like the North Atlantic Ocean. In the context of global warming, distribution range shifts are expected to occur in species affected by temperature. Consequently, a northward displacement of the tropical pilot whale G. macrorynchus is expected, eventually leading to increased secondary contact areas and opportunities for interspecific hybridization. Here, we describe genetic evidences of recurrent hybridization between pil

How effectively do horizontal and vertical response strategies of long-finned pilot whales reduce sound exposure from naval sonar?

The behaviour of a marine mammal near a noise source can modulate the sound exposure it receives. We demonstrate that two long-finned pilot whales both surfaced in synchrony with consecutive arrivals of multiple sonar pulses. We then assess the effect of surfacing and other behavioural response strategies on the received cumulative sound exposure levels and maximum sound pressure levels (SPLs) by modelling realistic spatiotemporal interactions of a pilot whale with an approaching source. Under the propagation conditions of our model, some response strategies observed in the wild were effective

Comparison of CIC and HR GFMAS for the measurements of extractable organofluorines (EOF) in different biological tissues of pilot whales.

BACKGROUND: In most water and biological samples, the sum of target or even non-target PFAS makes up only a small fraction of the extractable organofluorine (EOF). The methods used for EOF analysis in the methanol are combustion ion chromatography (CIC) and recently high-resolution graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR GFMAS). Water samples show a bias towards higher concentrations measured with HR GFMAS than that of CIC. Whether the bias depends on the type of PFAS or on the sample matrix has not been known. Here we study the PFAS compound and the matrix effect using HR GFMAS

Ultrastructure of synapses and golgi analysis of neurons in neocortex of the lateral gyrus (visual cortex) of the dolphin and pilot whale.

Qualitative and computerized quantitative analyses of ultrastructural features of synapses in different layers of the primary visual cortex in the dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) and the pilot whale (Globicephala melaena) were carried out. Also, Golgi and cytoarchitectonic analyses were performed in the same species of cetaceans and, additionally, in Tursiops truncatus and Phocaena phocaena. It was found that on a synaptic level, as well as in cytoarchitectonic and Golgi features, the neocortex of cetaceans combines evolutionary progressive features and conservative features with a marked prev

Variations in lipid composition and sound velocity in melon from the North Atlantic Pilot whale, globicephala melaena melaena.

Nonpolar lipids and sound velocity at different distances from the skin surface within a sample of pilot whale melon were studied. Thin layer chromatography, sensitive radioisotopic methods, and an ultrasonic echo scanner were used. Wax esters had a maximum concentration at 11-12 cm from the skin surface. Non- and monoisovalero triglycerides both exhibited a minimum at 8-10 cm, whereas the diisovalero species increased steadily from the skin surface towards the center of the pilot whale head. A minimum of sound velocity, ca. 1340 m/s, was found at 9-11 cm, thus coinciding with a region rich in

Characterization of macroplastics ingested by 23% of stranded short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the Main Hawaiian Islands (2010-2023).

We examined the gastrointestinal tracts of 13 short-finned pilot whales that stranded between 2010 and 2023 in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Large, tangled masses of marine debris were observed at necropsy in stomachs of 3 of the 13 individuals examined, a frequency of occurrence of 23.1% (95% CI: ~5-54%). These findings increase the number of reported global cases of marine debris ingestion by short-finned pilot whales from 7 to 10. The total dry mass after 2.5 h at 60 °C of the ingested marine debris among the three individuals ranged from 561.4 to 1870.6 g with 6283-35,543 plastic pieces (>5 m
