A systematic review and meta-analysis of routine white blood cell concentrations in people with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary consequences of eating disorders on physical health include alterations in immune parameters, such as white blood cells (WBCs), because of altered eating patterns and compensatory behaviours. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined articles from three databases, reporting concentrations of WBCs or WBC subtypes (e.g., lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, neutrophils) in people with eating disorders. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted cross-sectionally for WBCs and available subtypes for anorexia nervosa (AN) versus HC, bulimia nerv

Political representation and perinatal outcomes to Black, White, and Hispanic people in Georgia: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to estimate differences in perinatal outcomes by racial differences in political representation, a measure of structural racism. METHODS: We gathered data on the racial composition of county-level elected officials for all counties in Georgia (n = 159) in 2022. We subtracted the percent of non-White elected officials from the percent of non-White residents to calculate the "representation difference," with greater positive values indicating a larger disparity. We linked this to data from 2020-2021 birth certificates (n = 238,795) on outcomes (preterm birth, <37 weeks, lo

Contributions of cerebral white matter hyperintensities, age, and pedal perception to postural sway in people with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: With aging, people with HIV (PWH) have diminishing postural stability that increases liability for falls. Factors and neuromechanisms contributing to instability are incompletely known. Brain white matter abnormalities seen as hyperintense (WMH) signals have been considered to underlie instability in normal aging and PWH. We questioned whether sway-WMH relations endured after accounting for potentially relevant demographic, physiological, and HIV-related variables. DESIGN: Mixed cross-sectional/longitudinal data were acquired over 15 years in 141 PWH and 102 age-range matched contr

The Effects of Tau, Amyloid, and White Matter Lesions on Mobility, Dual Tasking, and Balance in Older People.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate whether white matter lesions (WML), β-amyloid-, and tau pathologies are independently associated with mobility, dual tasking, and dynamic balance performance in older nondemented individuals. METHODS: We included 299 older people (mean, SD, age: 71.8, 5.6 years) from the Swedish BioFINDER study, whereof 175 were cognitively unimpaired and 124 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In multivariable regression analyses, dependent variables included mobility (Timed Up & Go [TUG]), dual tasking (TUG with a simultaneous subtraction task, that is, TUG-Cog,

Ethnicity a risk factor? The relation between ethnicity and large- and small-vessel disease in White people, Black people, and Asians within a hospital-based population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that in patients with ischaemic stroke, White people often present with large-vessel and Black people with small-vessel strokes. This study investigates the relation between large- and small-vessel disease, and ethnicity in White, Black, and Asian patients in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. METHODS: In a hospital-based population of 668 patients ethnicity was determined by self-identification. The relation between ethnicity and carotid stenosis, as an indicator of large-vessel disease, was determined using univariate analysis, and adjusted for age, gender, hyp

Serum inflammation markers associated with altered brain white matter microstructure in people with HIV on antiretroviral treatment.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have reported reduced brain white matter fractional anisotropy (FA) and increased mean diffusivity (MD) on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of people with HIV (PWH). Few, however, have linked individual blood inflammatory markers with white matter tract-specific FA and MD. METHODS: PWH 50 years old or older from New York, NY, USA, were invited to a cross-sectional study. Demographic data, blood samples, and brain DTI were obtained. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to examine associations between biomarkers and white matter trac

Hippocampal cingulum white matter increases over time in young people at high genetic risk for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a strongly familial psychiatric disorder associated with white matter (WM) brain abnormalities. It is unclear whether such abnormalities are present in relatives without BD, and little is known about WM trajectories in those at increased genetic risk. METHODS: Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) data were acquired at baseline and after two years in 91 unaffected individuals with a first-degree relative with bipolar disorder (HR), and 85 individuals with no family history of mental illness (CON). All participants were aged between 12 and 30 years at

Insulin sensitivity and kinetics in African American and White people with obesity: Insights from different study protocols.

OBJECTIVE: Studies that used an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) have suggested that race is an important modulator of insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, and insulin clearance. However, the validity of the IVGTT has been challenged. METHODS: This study assessed insulin sensitivity and insulin kinetics in non-Hispanic White (NHW, n = 29) and African American (AA, n = 14) people with obesity by using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic pancreatic clamp with glucose tracer infusion, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and an IVGTT. RESULTS: Hepatic insulin sensitivity was better in AA

Suppression of Melatonin Secretion in Totally Visually Blind People by Ocular Exposure to White Light: Clinical Characteristics.

PURPOSE: Although most totally visually blind individuals exhibit nonentrained circadian rhythms due to an inability of light to entrain the circadian pacemaker, a small proportion retain photic circadian entrainment, melatonin suppression, and other nonimage-forming responses to light. It is thought that these responses to light persist because of the survival of melanospin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which project primarily to the circadian pacemaker and are functionally distinct from the rod and cone photoreceptors that mediate vision. We aimed t

Predictors of chlamydia or gonorrhea among people with HIV in Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program in 2017.

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of chlamydia or gonorrhea and factors associated with the diagnoses among people with HIV (PHIV) in the Ryan White Program Part A (RWP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida. We used 2017 calendar year data to identify factors associated with a chlamydia or gonorrhea diagnoses using logistic regression. About 50% of the 7110 PHIV who were ≥18 years old in active Ryan White care in 2017 reported being screened for chlamydia or gonorrhea. Of those screened, 2.3% reported diagnoses of chlamydia, gonorrhea or both. In the adjusted model, compared to P

Psychotherapy is not just for Rich White People: Outcomes for Clients from Minoritized Backgrounds and in a Community Training Clinic.

Although dose-response and similar psychotherapy outcome studies have been plentiful in recent years, most assume a one-size-fits-all approach. They often rely on homogeneous populations, which usually means wealthy, Eurocentric groups. Although financial hardship, race, ethnicity, and sexual minoritized status are associated with significantly worse mental health outcomes, these samples remain underrepresented in psychotherapy research. Previous research on the contributions of these demographic factors has produced mixed results. Understanding whether these factors impact psychotherapy outco

White Matter Hyperintensities and Cognitive Functions in People With the R544C Variant of the NOTCH3 Gene Without Stroke or Dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: NOTCH3 pathologic variants cause cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), which presents with stroke and dementia and is characterized by white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on brain MRI. The R544C variant is a common pathologic variant in Taiwan, but not all carriers exhibit significant symptoms. We investigated whether WMHs occur before clinical symptoms in carriers with pathogenic variants, examined factors associated with WMHs, and explored their relationship with cognitive functions. METHODS: We enro

Racial disparities in gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes among Black and White pregnant people with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: This study of pregnant people with obesity examined two aims in testing the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic widened racial disparity in maternal health in high-risk pregnancies; it compared by race both (1) gestational weight gain (GWG) patterns and (2) patterns of preexisting conditions and adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective chart review included birth certificate and delivery records from a large women's specialty hospital in Louisiana between 2018 and 2022. Differences in preexisting conditions, GWG, and adverse pregnancy outcomes were explored across

Parietal resting-state EEG alpha source connectivity is associated with subcortical white matter lesions in HIV-positive people.

OBJECTIVE: Parietal resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha (8-10 Hz) source connectivity is abnormal in HIV-positive persons. Here we tested whether this abnormality may be associated with subcortical white matter vascular lesions in the cerebral hemispheres. METHODS: Clinical, rsEEG, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) datasets in 38 HIV-positive persons and clinical and rsEEG datasets in 13 healthy controls were analyzed. Radiologists visually evaluated the subcortical white matter hyperintensities from T2-weighted FLAIR MRIs (i.e., Fazekas scale). In parallel, neurophysiologi

White matter hyperintensities rather than lacunar infarcts are associated with depressive symptoms in older people: the LADIS study.

OBJECTIVE: Both white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and lacunar infarcts have been associated with the development of depression in older subjects, although the relative importance of the two and the influence of lesion location and concomitant vascular disease are unclear. This study investigates the relationship between location and burden of WMH and lacunes on depressive features in older people. METHOD: In a pan-European multicenter study of 626 older subjects, the authors examined the relationship between regional magnetic resonance imaging white matter hyperintensities, number of lacuna

Association of heart rate with coronary risk factors and increased white blood cell counts in healthy Japanese people.

Elevated resting heart rate (HR) is associated with hypertension in addition to or similar to increased incidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Subjects with high HR exhibit the characteristic features of insulin resistance syndrome. Sympathetic overactivity underlies this clinical condition. However, the true mechanism of high HR is unclear. We examined the relation between resting HR and age, gender, traditional coronary risk factors, and white blood cell (WBC) count in urban Japanese. The study population comprised 2,736 people aged 40, 50, and 60 years old. Multiple regression

Changes in Gray Matter Morphology and White Matter Microstructure Across the Adult Lifespan in People With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is commonly associated with mesiotemporal pathology and widespread alterations of gray and white matter structures. Evidence supports a progressive condition, although the temporal evolution of TLE is poorly defined. In this ENIGMA-Epilepsy study, we aim to investigate structural alterations in gray and white matter across the adult lifespan in patients with TLE by charting both gray and white matter changes and explore the covariance of age-related alterations in both compartments. METHODS: Mega-analysis of parcellated T1-weighted and d
