Widowhood, Socio-Economic Status, Health and Wellbeing in Low and Middle-Income Countries.

Using data on women aged 50 and over from the WHO's Survey of Ageing and Adult Health for China, Ghana, India, the Russian Federation and South Africa (N=17,009), we assess associations between widowhood and socio-economic, health and quality of life deprivations. We find variations in the prevalence and timing of widowhood across the study countries, and associations between widowhood and being in the poorest wealth quintile for all five countries. For other deprivations, national experiences varied, with stronger and more consistent effects for India and China. These findings challenge gener

The Impact of Widowhood on Well-Being: Challenges, Coping Mechanisms, and Policy Implications.

Widowhood is one of the major life transitions with implications for the psychological, social, and economic well-being of women, especially in India. The research explores the situation of widows in Odisha, focusing on their psychological well-being, as measured by the WHO Well-Being Index, and the coping mechanisms they employ. With a sample of 100 widows, the study finds that 82% face financial instability, while 67% experience anxiety and loneliness. The WHO-5 assessment shows that 31% of respondents suffer from poor mental health, significantly elevating their risk for depression. Active

Cognitive Decline After Divorce and Widowhood: Is Marital Loss Always a Loss?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We used longitudinal data to determine whether the type of marital loss is associated with the rate of cognitive change before and after divorce or widowhood. Previous research found that relationship status was associated with older adults' cognitive performance: married persons performed better on memory assessments and had lower dementia risk than unmarried-cohabitating, never-married, divorced, and widowed persons. However, the end of a marriage may cause distress or reduce distress because a stressor disappears. Questions thus remain about the mechanisms by whic

Co-residence with children as a mediator between widowhood and loneliness in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness in older adults, exacerbated by widowhood, is a significant public health concern. While widowhood can lead to changes in living arrangements, its impact on loneliness may vary across cultural contexts. In Western societies, widowhood often results in older adults living alone, which can intensify feelings of loneliness. However, in China, the cultural norm of filial piety and multigenerational households may lead to different outcomes. As few studies have explored this connection over time, this research seeks to bridge this gap using data from older Chinese adults. ME

The relationship between mortality and time since divorce, widowhood or remarriage in Norway.

The chance of dying within any given year probably depends not only on marital status in that year but also on earlier partnership history. There is still not much knowledge about such effects, however. Our intention is to see how mortality is associated with time since divorce, bereavement and remarriage and time between marital disruption and remarriage. We use register data that include the entire Norwegian population aged 40-89 from 1970 to 2008 (70,701,767 person-years of exposure and 1,484,281 deaths). The excess mortality of divorced men compared to their married counterparts increases

Widowhood in the era of HIV/AIDS: a case study of Slaya District, Kenya.

Luo women are believed to acquire contagious cultural impurity after the death of their husbands that is perceived as dangerous to other people. To neutralise this impure state, a sexual cleansing rite is observed. In the indigenous setting, the ritual was observed by a brother-in-law or cousin of the deceased husband through a guardianship institution. However, with the emergence of HIV/AIDS, many educated brothers-in-law refrain from the practice and instead hire professional cleansers as substitutes. If the deceased spouses were HIV positive, the ritual places professional cleansers at risk

When widowhood meets hospitalisation risk: the dynamic, time-dependent association in older adults.

BACKGROUND: In China's rapidly ageing society, widowhood is a prevalent stressor, yet the temporal dynamics of its impact on healthcare utilisation remain poorly understood. While "widowhood shock" is documented in Western settings, how the association evolves with duration in China's distinct sociocultural context is unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the heterogeneous and dynamic association between widowhood and hospitalization risk among Chinese older adults, and to verify the robustness of the findings through rigorous causal identification methods. METHODS: Using five

Spouse-side heterogeneity in widowhood: Preloss cognitive performance and survivors' depressive-symptom change.

OBJECTIVES: Widowhood research has documented substantial heterogeneity in survivors' psychological adjustment, but explanations have focused mainly on survivor-side characteristics. Using Health and Retirement Study waves 3-15, we examined whether variation in the spouse who is lost constitutes another dimension of this heterogeneity, focusing on preloss spouse cognitive performance. METHODS: We identified 4983 first observed married-to-widowed transitions. Fully adjusted comparisons included 3190 widowhood intervals; the risk-set design comprised 99,335 intervals from 20,617 respondents, an

Embodied Grief in the Shadow of Violence: An Integrative Conceptual Review of Widowhood, Trauma, and Social Constraint.

Violent widowhood remains among the least theorized forms of bereavement. While dominant Western psychological models have advanced grief theory, they do not adequately explain grief following intentional spousal loss amid violence, ongoing threat, and gendered social regulation. This integrative conceptual review synthesizes interdisciplinary and cross-cultural scholarship on violent widowhood, traumatic bereavement, embodiment, structural violence, and social constraint to develop a context-sensitive framework for grief after intentional spousal loss. Four interrelated dimensions are identif

Widowhood, sex, labor force participation, and the use of physician services by elderly adults.

This paper investigated the relationships of widowhood, sex, and labor force participation with the use of ambulatory physician services by elderly adults. Data on 18,441 individuals aged 55 and over were taken from the 1978 Health Interview Survey. Hierarchical regression results indicated that although these three factors are related to physician utilization at the zero- and first-partial levels, only sex remained significant when their two- and three-way interactions and other variables from the behavioral model (including living arrangements) were introduced. This suggests that the effects

When Parents Grieve: Adult Child Support and Depressive Symptoms Among Men and Women After Widowhood.

Widowhood often leads to increased depressive symptoms, yet the gendered role of adult-child support in moderating these consequences is understudied. We used eight waves of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and fixed-effects panel regression to assess how three forms of support from adult children - contact frequency, instrumental support, and geographic proximity - affect depressive symptoms in 2,600 widowed women and 896 widowed men. Results show that weekly contact with at least one adult child buffered the increase in depressive symptoms after widowhood, whereas the re

Widowhood, immune aging, and mortality in older Americans: evidence from the US Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Widowhood has been linked to increased mortality risk, particularly among men, but the biological mechanisms remain unknown. Given the impacts of stress on immune function, we hypothesized that widowhood leads to increased mortality by impacting immunity. METHODS: Data from 8410 US adults aged 56 and older in the Health and Retirement Study, including flow cytometry of blood samples, survey data, and mortality, were analyzed. Associations between widowhood, immunosenescence (measured by the CD8+:CD4+ Ratio, EMRA CD4+:Naïve CD4+ Ratio, EMRA CD8+:Naïve CD8+ Ratio), and mortality wer

Evolution of Widowhood Lifespan and Its Gender and Educational Inequalities in Finland Over Three Decades.

Widowhood is a disruptive life event, and in aging societies, increased numbers of individuals are potentially exposed to it. Yet, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the demography of widowhood. Using total population data with information on marital and cohabiting unions, discrete-time event-history analysis, and incidence-based multistate life tables, we analyze lifetime risk of widowhood, mean age at becoming widowed, widowhood expectancy, and variation in years spent widowed, and also document gender and educational differences in these metrics over the last three decades in Finland.

Religious Involvement and the Impact on Living Alone and Depression: An Examination of Gendered Pathways Post-Widowhood.

This study analyzed data from the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study (HRS) to examine the association between widowhood and depression. The results revealed that both men and women experienced increased depression after widowhood, with women exhibiting a better recovery pattern over time. Religiosity, especially attending religious services, was found to be a beneficial coping mechanism for both genders, although men were less religious than women. Living alone was a significant factor associated with depression in widowhood for both men and women. High religious service att

Gender differences in access to community-based care: a longitudinal analysis of widowhood and living arrangements.

UNLABELLED: Persistent inequalities in access to community-based support limit opportunities for independent living for older people with care needs in Europe. Our study focuses on investigating how gender, widowhood and living arrangement associate with the probability of receiving home and community-based care, while accounting for the shorter-term associations of transitions into widowhood (bereavement) and living alone, as well as the longer-term associations of being widowed and living alone. We use comparative, longitudinal data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Widowhood Shock, Family Reconstruction, and Mild Cognitive Impairment Among Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), especially among widowed older adults, is increasingly urging public concern. This study aimed to investigate the association of widowhood, remarriage, and widowed life characteristics with the MCI risk among Chinese older adults. With an average age of 86.49 ± 10.20, a sample of 5377 participants aged between 65 and 116 was collected from four waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey between 2008 and 2018. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline models were employed to estimate and plot the associations. Results showed tha

The relationship between widowhood and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults: Does living alone make a difference?

The experience of widowhood and that of living alone are significant life events that are strongly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the relationship between widowhood, living alone, and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults, particularly with regard to the duration of widowhood. This study included 4,644 older adults aged 65 and above from the 2015, 2018, and 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Linear regression models were used to examine the relationship between widowhood, living alone, and depress

Effects of divorce and widowhood on subsequent health behaviours and outcomes in a sample of middle-aged and older Australian adults.

Marital disruption is a common life event with potential health implications. We examined the prospective association of divorce/widowhood with subsequent lifestyles, psychological, and overall health outcomes within short and longer terms using three waves of data from the 45 and Up Study in Australia (T1, 2006-09; T2, 2010; T3, 2012-16). Marital status and health-related outcomes were self-reported using validated questionnaires. Nine outcomes were examined including lifestyles (smoking, drinking, diet and physical activity), psychological outcomes (distress, anxiety and depression) and over
