Specialization of phonological and semantic processing in Chinese word reading.

The purpose of this study was to examine the neurocognitive network for processing visual word forms in native Chinese speakers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In order to compare the processing of phonological and semantic representations, we developed parallel rhyming and meaning association judgment tasks that required explicit access and manipulation of these representations. Subjects showed activation in left inferior/middle frontal gyri, bilateral medial frontal gyri, bilateral middle occipital/fusiform gyri, and bilateral cerebella for both the rhyming and meaning ta

Neuromagnetic spectral distribution of implicit processing of words.

Neuromagnetic spectral distributions when silently viewing words and non-words were investigated using a 151-channel whole head MEG system. The data were analyzed with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM). The dominant changes of spectral power were identified in the parietal and occipital cortices in 15-30 Hz, 30-60 Hz and 60-125 Hz bands following both word and non-word stimulations. The changes in Broca's and Wernicke's areas were consistently observed in 60-125 Hz bands, mainly following word stimulation. The results indicated that the occipital and parietal cortices were most probably in

Musical Emotion Modulates Concrete and Abstract Word Processing: Evidence from ERPs.

Background/Objectives: Cross-modal emotional priming effects of music on language have been widely demonstrated, but how musical emotion interacts with different types of conceptual representation remains unclear. This study examined whether emotional musical contexts exert differential influences on the processing of concrete and abstract words, whose processing is thought to depend to different degrees on sensorimotor and affective experience. Methods: Two ERP experiments were conducted using a long stimulus-onset asynchrony priming paradigm with two independent groups of participants. In Ex

Semantic Typicality of Affixes Facilitates Word Processing: MEG Evidence From Arabic.

Upon reading a word, we decompose it into meaningful parts-morphemes. Even if novel, we can derive a likely meaning for it based on how its parts typically behave. Given the typical meaning of affix "-ery," we may guess that a bottlery is a place to make bottles, although we may alternatively guess that it is the craft of bottle making. In this study, we operationalize this feature-an affix's semantic typicality-to investigate affix semantics' role in word processing. Using a lexical decision task and a double dissociative design in an MEG setting, we took advantage of Arabic's highly producti

Word Reading and Spelling Processing and Acquired Dyslexia post Unilateral Stroke.

This study investigates the performance of adults with cerebrovascular lesion in the right hemisphere (RHL) or left hemisphere (LHL) in word reading (TLPP) and spelling (TEPP) tasks based on the dual-route models. A total of 85 adults were assessed, divided into three groups: 10 with RHL, 15 with LHL, and 60 neurologically healthy ones. The performance of the three groups was compared in terms of the characteristics of the words (regularity, frequency, and length) and pseudowords (length), error types, and psycholinguistic effects. A cluster analysis was performed to investigate the profiles o

Cortical disorders of speech processing: Pure word deafness and auditory agnosia.

Selective disorders of auditory speech processing due to brain lesions are reviewed. Over 120 years after the first anatomic report (Dejerine and Sérieux, 1898), fewer than 80 cumulative cases of generalized auditory agnosia and pure word deafness with documented brain lesions are on record. Most patients (approximately 70%) had vascular lesions. Damage is very frequently bilateral in generalized auditory agnosia, and more frequently unilateral in pure word deafness. In unilateral cases, anatomical disconnection is not a prerequisite, and disorders may be due to functional disconnection. Regar

Spoken word processing in Rett syndrome: Evidence from event-related potentials.

This study examined the feasibility of using auditory event-related potentials to evaluate spoken word processing during passive listening in girls with Rett syndrome (n = 11) and typical peers (n = 33), age 4-12 years. The typical group demonstrated the expected pattern of more negative amplitudes within 200-500 ms in response to words than nonwords at left temporal sites. In participants with Rett syndrome, word-nonword differentiation was observed at the right temporal sites. More negative left hemisphere amplitudes in response to words were associated (at trend level) with better receptive

Structural and functional correlates for language efficiency in auditory word processing.

This study aims to provide convergent understanding of the neural basis of auditory word processing efficiency using a multimodal imaging. We investigated the structural and functional correlates of word processing efficiency in healthy individuals. We acquired two structural imaging (T1-weighted imaging and diffusion tensor imaging) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during auditory word processing (phonological and semantic tasks). Our results showed that better phonological performance was predicted by the greater thalamus activity. In contrary, better semantic performance was

Semantic word category processing in semantic dementia and posterior cortical atrophy.

There is general agreement that perisylvian language cortex plays a major role in lexical and semantic processing; but the contribution of additional, more widespread, brain areas in the processing of different semantic word categories remains controversial. We investigated word processing in two groups of patients whose neurodegenerative diseases preferentially affect specific parts of the brain, to determine whether their performance would vary as a function of semantic categories proposed to recruit those brain regions. Cohorts with (i) Semantic Dementia (SD), who have anterior temporal-lob

Reading component skills in dyslexia: word recognition, comprehension and processing speed.

The cognitive model of reading comprehension (RC) posits that RC is a result of the interaction between decoding and linguistic comprehension. Recently, the notion of decoding skill was expanded to include word recognition. In addition, some studies suggest that other skills could be integrated into this model, like processing speed, and have consistently indicated that this skill influences and is an important predictor of the main components of the model, such as vocabulary for comprehension and phonological awareness of word recognition. The following study evaluated the components of the R

Functional interactions of the inferior frontal cortex during the processing of words and word-like stimuli.

The hypothesis that ventral/anterior left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) subserves semantic processing and dorsal/posterior LIFG subserves phonological processing was tested by determining the pattern of functional connectivity of these regions with regions in left occipital and temporal cortex during the processing of words and word-like stimuli. In accordance with the hypothesis, we found strong functional connectivity between activity in ventral LIFG and activity in occipital and temporal cortex only for words, and strong functional connectivity between activity in dorsal LIFG and activity i

Semantic processing of emotional words in depression and schizophrenia.

Major depressive disorder is associated with dysfunction in brain regions involved in language and emotion processing. Despite evidence of emotion processing biases in depression, neurophysiological evidence of language dysfunction for emotional words in depression has been inconsistent. This series of three studies evaluated whether depressed individuals exhibited abnormal semantic processing of emotionally-valenced words. During the passive viewing of sentences with mood congruent and incongruent sentence endings, the N400 component of the event-related brain potential was measured in patien

Spatiotemporal neural dynamics of Chinese word form processing: An SEEG study.

Chinese written word forms are visually complex and structurally distinct from picture stimuli (line drawings of objects), yet the neural processing differences between these two stimulus categories are not well understood when phonological and semantic factors are controlled. We recorded stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) from 27 adults with epilepsy during oral reading and picture naming. Stimuli included 36 words and corresponding object pictures, matched in phonology and semantics but differing in visual form. Compared with matched pictures, written words elicited relative low-frequency s

WORD PROCESSING ABILITIES IN SUBJECTS AFTER STROKE OR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY.

Acquired language disorder is a common consequence of stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Following the logogen model, this study investigated word processing abilities of post-stroke and post-TBI patients. Within- and between-group differences in word comprehension, naming, and reading were observed, as well as predominant errors in performance. Twenty-two post-stroke and 22 post-TBI patients were tested using tasks from the Comprehensive Aphasia Test-HR (CAT-HR). Post-TBI patients outperformed post-stroke patients in naming and reading. Both groups exhibited neologisms, phonological, se

Early visual word processing in children with ADHD: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disability (RD) co-occur frequently. Although reading comprehension difficulties in children with ADHD have been well documented, early visual word processing remains unclear. AIMS: This study investigated event-related potential (ERP) responses to visual stimuli in children with ADHD (6-12 years) by focusing on the N170 component, which signifies rapid, automatic, and specialized processing of visual words. PROCEDURES: Twenty children with ADHD and twenty typically developing (TD) children matched for sex and age perfor

The role of foveal and parafoveal word-processing efficiency in reading Chinese.

This study examined the relationship between the processing efficiency of single-character and two-character words presented in fovea and parafovea and word-level eye-movement parameters in reading Chinese among a heterogenous sample of 70 adult readers (age 18-60 years). Foveal processing efficiency was assessed with performance accuracy in lexical decision, where one-character and two-character words of medium frequency and pseudowords were presented backward-masked for identification using different exposure times (40 ms and 60 ms). Parafoveal-processing efficiency was assessed by presentin

Differential Modulation of Retroactive Emotional Learning on Concrete and Abstract Word Processing.

The present study employed a sensory preconditioning paradigm combined with behavioral measures and event-related potential (ERP) techniques to investigate whether emotional information could retroactively modulate the processing of previously encoded neutral concrete and abstract words. Behavioral results indicated that word memory performance was retroactively modulated by subsequent emotional conditioning: when the objects paired with abstract words were associated with aversive (vs. neutral) sounds subsequently, recognition accuracy was significantly higher and reaction times faster; for c

Automatic word processing hypnosis and cognitive therapy for psychosis: a case report.

Hallucinations are often perceived as auditory and visual experiences emanating from outside the mind and it is this belief by patients that is a powerfully convincing factor in maintaining psychotic symptoms and accompanying distress. One of the main tasks of cognitive therapy for psychosis is to help the person recognize that the hallucinations emerge from within their own mind for some meaningful reason. A change in meaning can change a person's affective and behavioral responses to hallucinatory phenomena. Automatic Word Processing (AWP) hypnosis is a novel way to help a person realize tha

Recovery of semantic word processing in global aphasia: a functional MRI study.

One important issue concerning the recovery of higher cognitive functions-such as word comprehension in aphasia-is to what extent impairments can be compensated for by intact parts of the network of areas normally involved in a closely related function ("redundancy recovery"). In a previous functional MRI investigation, we were able to show that left hemispheric redundancy recovery within a distributed system of related lexical-semantic functions was the most probable basis of recovery of comprehension from transcortical sensory aphasia. The question remained, however, whether redundancy recov

The Gogi (word-meaning) syndrome with impaired kanji processing: alexia with agraphia.

Two cases, one with probable Pick's disease and one with herpes simplex encephalitis, are presented, focusing on Gogi (word-meaning) aphasia-like syndrome as their salient clinical feature. Their aphasic symptoms were characterized by impaired kanji processing and preserved kana processing in writing and oral reading known as a defining feature of Gogi aphasia, but little evidence of so-called "phonetic use of kanji in writing" and "confusion between on- and kun-readings of kanji in oral reading" often observed in Gogi aphasia.
