The health effects of gendered and devalued work: health outcomes of incarcerated women engaging in sex work and care/service work.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of incarceration are often engaged in highly gendered work, either sex work or low-wage care/service work jobs. While employment is an important element of reentry plans, low-wage jobs may not necessarily help women leave illicit activities, including commercial sex work. Incarcerated women often move between care/service work and sex work to supplement income, putting them at greater risk for negative health outcomes. RESULTS: Using survey data from 400 women detained in a large urban jail, we examined how incarcerated women's experience with sex work and low

How Burnout Relates to Authentic Leadership and Work Engagement in Nursing in Italy.

This study explores the relationships between nursing burnout, work engagement, and authentic leadership in Italy. It was a cross-sectional study in which the participants completed an online survey comprising three instruments. We found a significant and negative correlation between Personal Accomplishment (PA) and the Internalized Moral Perspective (r = -.108, p = .022) and Vigor (r = -.095, p = .043). Significant differences were assessed in PA levels according to the Internalized Moral Perspective (F = 5.261, p = .022), and lower PA levels also had lower mean scores in Internalized Moral P

How corporate entrepreneurship shapes millennials' work engagement: the role of autonomy and competence.

INTRODUCTION: Corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and work engagement (WE) are well-established topics in the literature; however, little is known about the psychological processes through which a CE ecosystem shapes employee engagement. Specifically, no prior studies have explained this relationship in terms of psychological need satisfaction. In addition, the millennial workforce, characterized by distinctive values and work preferences, has received limited attention in CE research. To address these gaps, this study applies self-determination theory (SDT) to examine how satisfaction of basic ps

When high work engagement is negative for family tasks: mechanisms and boundary conditions.

BACKGROUND: Typically, work engagement is positively related to beneficial job outcomes. Earlier studies, however, revealed a "dark side" of work engagement showing negative effects such as more work-family conflict. Using a resource perspective, our study seeks to better understand why and when these negative effects of work engagement occur. Specifically, we test a new model in which the relationship of work engagement with work-family conflict is mediated by organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and work rumination. Moreover, we argue that employees' resource-building strategies (i.e.,

Working memory demands modulate memory brain state engagement.

The extent to which attention and memory processes rely on shared, as opposed to distinct, mechanisms is critical for understanding the role of both processes in cognition. We hypothesize that memory brain states, whole-brain activity patterns that support long-term memory encoding and retrieval, map onto the external/internal axis of attention. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a scalp electroencephalography study in which participants engaged in a working memory paradigm with and without maintenance demands. We used an independently validated cross-study multivariate pattern classifier t

Enhancing the Professional Work Environment Through Nursing Engagement in an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making and professional governance have long been defining features of American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet-designated organizations, supporting high-quality outcomes, professional autonomy, and nurse engagement. Within our multi-Magnet-designated academic medical center, part of a larger academic health system, a shared governance structure had been in place for many years. However, to respond to the evolving demands of the academic medical center, the increasing complexity of health care delivery, and the need for stronger alignment between frontline

Generational effect on nurses' work values, engagement, and satisfaction in an acute hospital.

BACKGROUND: The present nursing workforce comprises four generational of nurses working side-by-side. While such a generation blend adds invaluable diversity to the workforce, it also brings added complexity. The study aimed to describe and summarise work values and attitudes of four nursing generations, namely Baby boomers, Generation X, Y and Z. METHOD: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was adopted. A total of 778 nurses from an acute hospital in Singapore completed the online questionnaire. The Work Value and Attitude scale measuring seven constructs (Work Centrality, Non-compliance, T

Remote, Hybrid, and On-Site Work during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic and the Consequences for Stress and Work Engagement.

With the COVID-19 pandemic having disrupted economies, businesses, and individual activities, it is important to examine how different forms of work affect employee behaviour. This study applies work engagement (the key construct in organisational psychology) as the dependent variable and considers its determinants in the form of stress factors and attitudes toward remote work. A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 544 (Female = 58.5%) workers were surveyed: remote (n = 144), hybrid (n = 142), and on-site (n = 258). The selection for the study was purposive. Standardised survey que

Transgender female youth and sex work: HIV risk and a comparison of life factors related to engagement in sex work.

This study examined the HIV risk behaviors and life experiences of 151 transgender female youth, ages 15-24, in Los Angeles and Chicago. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression modeling were used to identify life factors associated with ever having engaged in sex work. Sixty-seven percent of participants had ever engaged in sex work and 19% self-reported being HIV positive. Many factors were significantly associated with sex work for this sample population. A final multivariate logistic regression model found that lower education status, homelessness, use of street drugs, and perceived so

Exhaustion, Not Low Engagement, Differentiates Work-Related and Non-Work-Related Depression in Korean Wage Workers: A Negative-Control Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Workplace mental health surveys routinely measure exhaustion and work engagement, but whether either distinguishes work-attributed depression from depression in general remains unclear. We examined this question among Korean wage workers using a negative control outcome design. Methods: We analyzed the seventh Korean Working Conditions Survey (2023), a nationally representative sample of wage workers (complete-case N = 25,776; 270 work-related and 271 non-work-related depression cases). Past-year depression was classified by workers' attribution, with non-work-related de

The Relationships among Proactive Personality, Work Engagement, and Perceived Work Competence in Sports Coaches: The Moderating Role of Perceived Supervisor Support.

Grounded in the job demands-resources model, this study examines the moderating role of supervisor support and the mediating role of sports coaches' work engagement in the relationship between proactive personality and perceived work competence. A total of 261 school sports coaches in Taiwan participated in the study. The results indicated that work engagement positively mediates the relationship between sports coaches' proactive personality and perceived work competence. Separately, supervisor support weakens the link between proactive personality and work engagement but strengthens the relat
