GPs, violence and work performance - 'just part of the job?'.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the impact of work related violence on general practitioners' work performance. METHOD: A postal survey of 1000 randomly selected GPs about work related violence. Those GPs reporting incidents of work related violence in the past 12 months were asked to write about its effect on them in response to an open question. RESULTS: Eighty-five GPs responded. Seventy-three percent of GPs who had experienced work related violence answered an open question about its effect on their work performance. The effect was negative for most, respondents citing poor concentration

[Work performance as a risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome].

Certification of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as an occupational disease should be based on evidence that the job performance is a dominant factor responsible for its development. Features of the way the job is performed, which can increase the constriction in carpal tunnel and their quantitative analysis are presented. They include a specific position of the hand during the job performance (dorsal bending, alternate bending and extension), e.g., overcoming resistance with fingers, pincher grip, object catching and holding, exerting pressure on the hand, repeated movements or work with vibrato

Acquired vibratory angioedema with a severe impact on work performance.

Vibratory urticaria/angioedema is an inducible type of urticaria that may be elicited by vibratory stimuli from work tool and instruments. A 39-year-old male construction worker was diagnosed with acquired vibratory angioedema associated with chronic spontaneous urticaria involving a severe work performance impairment. Response to omalizumab was immediate and complete. We evaluated the Urticarial Activity Score; the response to the vibratory angioedema provocation vortex test; and evolution of analytical parameters (e.g. high-affinity IgE receptor expression on peripheral blood basophils, C-re

Methazolamide does not impair respiratory work performance in anesthetized rabbits.

In human medicine, the carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor acetazolamide is used to treat irregular breathing disorders. Previously, we demonstrated in the rabbit that this substance stabilized closed-loop gain properties of the respiratory control system, but concomitantly weakened respiratory muscles. Among others, the highly diffusible CA-inhibitor methazolamide differs from acetazolamide in that it fails to activate Ca(2+)-dependent potassium channels in skeletal muscles. Therefore, we aimed to find out, whether or not methazolamide may exert attenuating adverse effects on respiratory muscle

Computer and Furniture Affecting Musculoskeletal Problems and Work Performance in Work From Home During COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: We surveyed how home-working conditions, specifically furniture and computer use, affected self-reported musculoskeletal problems and work performance. METHODS: Questionnaires from 4112 homeworkers were analyzed. The relationship between subjective musculoskeletal problems or work performance and working conditions were determined by logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: More than half the homeworkers used a work desk, work chair, and laptop computer. However, approximately 20% of homeworkers used a low table, floor chair/floor cushion, or other furniture that was different from

Content validity and utility of the Assessment of Work Performance (AWP).

In the area of work rehabilitation, many decisions about future interventions for the client are based on the results of various kinds of assessments. Therefore, it is important that the assessment instruments used are adequate, useful, and reliable. The purpose of this study was to investigate the content validity and utility of the instrument Assessment of Work Performance (AWP) which is used to assess an individual's observable (working) skills during work performance, i.e. how efficient and appropriate a client performs a work activity. A questionnaire was answered by 67 respondents who us

Does good trunk extensor performance protect against back-related work disability?

In this cohort study, dynamic trunk extensor performance was studied as a predictor of permanent work disability due to back disorders. As part of the comprehensive Mini-Finland Health Survey in 1978-80, the back muscle performance of 535 persons (267 men, 268 women) was measured using standardized repetitive arch-up and sit-up tests. At baseline, the participants were between 30 and 64 years of age. Retirements were followed for 12 years on average. During the follow-up, 56 subjects developed permanent work disability; 15 of these cases were back-related. Good dynamic trunk extensor performan

Reproducible voluntary muscle performance during constant work rate dynamic leg exercise.

During constant intensity treadmill or cycle exercise, progressive muscle fatigue is not readily quantified and endurance time is poorly reproducible. However, integration of dynamic knee extension (DKE) exercise with serial measurement of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force of knee extensor muscles permits close tracking of leg fatigue. We studied reproducibility of four performance indices: MVC force of rested muscle (MVC(rest)) rate of MVC force fall, time to exhaustion, and percentage of MVC(rest) (%MVC(rest)) at exhaustion in 11 healthy women (22+/-1 yrs) during identical constant w

Psychiatric symptoms and work performance among persons with severe mental illness.

The study examined the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and work performance for 61 subjects with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who participated in a work rehabilitation program. Symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) to predict performance on the Work Personality Profile at three and 13 weeks of the program. Twenty-seven percent of the variance in work performance measures could be explained by symptom components measured by the PANSS, including the cognitive, negative, and hostility components, but the posit

Effect of increased blood oxygen affinity on work performance of rats.

Influence of altered blood oxygen affinity on maximal performance ability was evaluated in trained rats exercising to exhaustion in a graded treadmill test. Modification of blood oxygen affinity was achieved both by 2,3-diphosphoglycerate depletion, accomplished by exposure of animals to CO(2) and by exchange transfusion with blood exposed to bisulfite or stored in acid citrate dextrose, and by carbamylation of hemoglobin, produced by exchange transfusion of blood incubated with potassium cyanate. A decrease in oxygen tension at half-saturation of hemoglobin (P(50)) from 36 to 23 mm Hg produce

Work stressors, Chinese coping strategies, and job performance in Greater China.

The aim of this research was to jointly test effects of work stressors and coping strategies on job performance among employees in the Greater China region. A self-administered survey was conducted to collect data from three major cities in the region, namely Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taipei (N = 380). Four important work stressors were assessed: heavy workload, organizational constraints, lack of work autonomy, and interpersonal conflict. We used a four-factor model of Chinese coping strategies composed of hobbies/relaxation, active action, seeking social support, and passive adaptation. Job pe

Selective activation of ipRGC modulates working memory performance.

Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are known to be sensitive to short-wavelength light (460-480 nm; blue or cyan light) and to play a role in regulating physiological responses such as circadian rhythms. Previous studies have shown that exposure to blue light improves performance on working memory tasks compared with exposure to amber light. However, it remains unclear whether these cognitive benefits via light are attributable to integrated signals across ipRGCs and rod/cone or ipRGC alone. To address this, the present study investigates the specific contribution of

The effect of working memory performance on functional MRI in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Studies of prefrontal cortical (PFC) function in schizophrenia have been inconsistent, with studies showing both increased and decreased PFC activation compared to healthy controls. Discrepant findings may be due to task performance effects or demographic differences between samples. We report functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data comparing subjects with schizophrenia and healthy controls performing a 2-back working memory (WM) task, addressing the effects of task performance. METHODS: Twenty-two controls and 14 patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia, scanned on a Siemen

Effects of alcohol and performance incentives on immediate working memory.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The Sternberg Memory Scanning task was used to test the hypotheses that immediate working memory (WM) would be impaired during moderate rising blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and provision of a rewarding incentive for good performance under alcohol would counteract this impairment. METHODS: Two groups (n=18) of social drinkers received either 0.62 g/kg alcohol (A) or a placebo (P). Reward (verbal feedback and money) for good performance was provided to another pair of alcohol and placebo groups (n=18) (AR and PR). All participants completed two tests when BACs i
