Journal of occupational and environmental medicine2000eng
Despite the availability of no fault insurance for wage replacement and medical care costs, the majority of workers diagnosed with an occupational disease do not apply for workers' compensation. The objective of the study was to determine the reasons why workers diagnosed with work-related musculoskeletal disease did not apply for workers' compensation benefits. A cross-sectional study of 1598 individuals diagnosed with neck, upper extremity, and low back work-related musculoskeletal disease from April to June 1996 was performed. All individuals were interviewed over the telephone using a stan

This study compares results of endoscopic carpal tunnel release using the two-portal technique in two groups of patients based on whether or not they were receiving workers' compensation. There were 50 patients in the worker's compensation group and 63 in the nonworker's compensation group. Mean follow-up was 40.8 months and 44.8 months, respectively. Duration of symptoms before surgery was statistically different in the two groups, 13.6 months in the worker's compensation groups compared to 26.2 months in the nonworker's compensation group. Worker's compensation patients tended to be younger,

OBJECTIVES: Singapore and Japan have well-established workers' compensation systems that differ significantly in their structure and approach. We sought to identify key differences between the 2 systems, highlight successful practices for consideration, and critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
METHODS: A comparative analysis of workers' compensation systems in Singapore and Japan was conducted in the form of a narrative review, drawing upon published data from peer-reviewed scientific journals, official national sources, and key international organizations.

BACKGROUND: Increased robot adoption and advancements in robotics have led to the emergence of robotic arms for collaborative applications that work alongside humans, increasing direct human-robot interaction. This shift highlights the need to address new safety challenges posed by emerging robotic technologies. Currently, there is limited research on robot-related injuries.
METHODS: Robot-related workers' compensation claims from 2001 to 2020 were identified using a keyword search from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (OHBWC) database. Descriptive analyses were conducted on this clai

We conducted this study to evaluate the clinical and disability status of injured workers 4.6 years after undergoing multidisciplinary pain center evaluation, comparing subjects who received treatment to subjects who were evaluated only. Three hundred injured workers were selected for a telephone survey; 150 had received pain center treatment and 150 had been evaluated but not treated. The survey included the SF-12, and questions about subjects' pain intensity and current work status. A workers' compensation database indicated the disability status of subjects. The response rate was 50%. In mu

Previous studies have reported that tractors are responsible for high proportions of fatal and nonfatal agricultural injuries. However, many common and preventable risk factors, conditions, and associated costs related to tractor-related injuries have not been investigated. This case-based study used workers' compensation data to investigate tractor-related injuries. The objectives of this study were to (1) identify and describe tractor-related injuries, (2) assess medical and indemnity costs associated with tractor-related injuries, and (3) determine contributing factors associated with those

The lead paper, "Parallel Payers and Preferred Access: How Canada's Workers' Compensation Boards Expedite Care for Injured and Ill Workers," discusses the implications of funding parallel systems of health - workers' compensation and provincially operated services - and concludes that the current model can create rivalries and inequities through preferred access for some workers. The following commentary outlines provincially funded healthcare insurance and workers' compensation systems in the context of their public policy origins, common and distinct features and social purposes. It argues t

From the author's own experience in over a decade of handling work-related claims involving the hand, fingers, and wrists, they are not only the most frequently seen work-related injuries but as a whole result in more disability, from the occupational standpoint, than those involving any other area of the body.

The role that the secondary gain of work-related back pain plays in the length of disability is an issue that has been debated for years without absolute resolution. This article compares the disability period of lumbar sprain/strain and operated back cases in employees injured on duty and off duty. The patients injured on duty had a statistically significantly longer period of disability than those injured off duty, even when the cases were matched for gender and type of injury.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair (RCR) is increasingly being performed for both acute traumatic and degenerative tears of the rotator cuff, whereas total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is reserved for osteonecrosis of the humeral head, arthritis of the glenohumeral joint, and failed RCR.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the incidence and patient characteristics of rotator cuff tears (RCTs), RCRs, and TSAs among workers' compensation claimants.
METHODS: A total of 8347 RCTs indemnity claims filed to Accident Fund Group from 2007 to 2022 were studied.
RESULTS: Over the study period, the perc

BACKGROUND: Firefighters are at high risk for nonfatal and fatal occupational injuries. While some past research has quantified firefighter injuries using various data sources, Ohio workers' compensation injury claims data largely have not been used.
METHODS: Public and private firefighter claims, including volunteer and career firefighters, from Ohio's workers' compensation data for 2001-2017 were identified based on occupational classification codes and manual review of the occupation title and injury description. The task during injury (firefighting, patient care, training, other/unknown,

BACKGROUND: The optimal surgical indications for humeral shaft fractures in the working population remain uncertain. This study investigates the impact of surgical fixation on return to duty, union, and complications in workers' compensation patients with humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: All workers' compensation patients with humeral shaft fractures managed at a single institution between 2007 and 2017 were identified. Manual chart and radiographic review was performed to identify etiology of injury, type of work, time until return to duty, length of physical therapy, complications, and tim

Lumbar fusion for degenerative disk disease (DDD) is associated with variable clinical outcomes. Patients with workers' compensation claims often have worse fusion outcomes than the general population. Few studies have evaluated the risk factors for poor outcomes within this clinically distinct population. The goal of this study was to identify preoperative predictors of return to work status after fusion for DDD in a workers' compensation setting. The authors used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), diagnosis and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) procedural co

Lumbar fusion for spondylolisthesis is associated with consistent outcomes in the general population. However, workers' compensation is a risk factor for worse outcomes. Few studies have evaluated prognostic factors within this clinically distinct population. BACKGROUND: The burden imposed by workplace rotator cuff (RC) injuries has been reasonably defined. However, literature associated with the demographic characteristics and 'best practices' to manage such injuries among workers' compensation (WC) patients is scant.
AIMS: To consolidate the existing literature on full-thickness RC tears among WC patients. Subject, shoulder and injury characteristics were examined to determine if and how WC recipients may differ from their non-compensable counterparts.
METHODS: A systematic search (databases, clinical practice guideline web resources, conferenc
