PURPOSE: We propose a simple, anatomically based classification of blunt urethral injury as a replacement for currently used classifications, which are not comprehensive, anatomically inconsistent or based on a mixed anatomical/mechanistic formula. The latter are difficult to learn and use, and have not been universally adopted.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed most of the currently used general uroradiological, emergency radiological and urological textbooks to define the classification of urethral injuries that is most widely accepted. Most authors use the Colapinto and McCallum classific

During the last years, a marked change toward a more conservative approach in the treatment of abdominal trauma especially liver blunt trauma has been noted. The rationale for a conservative management is to avoid the operation or whenever this is not possible, to perform less extensive surgical resections. This approach, initially used in handling splenic trauma, is justified by the finding of spontaneous haemostasis in about half of liver injuries at the time of laparotomy. Moreover, the finding of an haemoperitoneum without signs of circulatory instability is not an absolute indication to l

Traumatic cerebrovascular injury (TCVI) is present in approximately 1% of all blunt force trauma patients and is associated with injuries such as head and cervical spine injuries and thoracic trauma. Increased recognition of patients with TCVI in the past quarter century has been because of aggressive screening protocols and noninvasive imaging with computed tomography angiography. Extracranial carotid and vertebral artery injuries demonstrate a spectrum of severity, from intimal disruption to traumatic aneurysm formation or vessel occlusion. The most common intracranial arterial injuries are

Bedside ultrasound assessment has become a routine aspect of care in trauma resuscitation and the critical care setting. Although early research was focused on its role in blunt trauma, it has shown utility in the assessment of penetrating trauma by rapidly identifying hemopericardium and facilitating appropriate intraoperative management. In addition, ultrasound is a reliable test in identifying hemopneumothorax or diaphragmatic injuries. The Rapid Ultrasound in Shock and Hypotension and the Focused Rapid Echocardiographic Examination can diagnose etiologies of shock and guide resuscitation i

Laryngeal trauma often results in impaired laryngeal physiology, and may result in severe dysphonia. Effective rehabilitation requires the utilization of sophisticated diagnostic and surgical methods.

BACKGROUND: Important organs and structures are located in the cervical region. In case of blunt and penetrating trauma, emergency situations may arise.
OBJECTIVE: Emergency management as well as diagnostic and therapeutic steps pertaining to neck injuries are presented.
CONCLUSION: Shock therapy and airway management are essential, fast management of neck injuries highly relevant.

Ballistic shields are used by military and police members in dangerous situations to protect the user against threats such as gunfire. When struck, the shield material deforms to absorb the incoming kinetic energy of the projectile. If the rapid back-face deformation contacts the arm, it can potentially impart a large force, leading to injury risk, termed behind armor blunt trauma (BABT). This work characterized the loading profiles due to the contact between the deforming back-face of the shield and the arm using a modified upper extremity anthropomorphic test device (ATD). This ATD measured

Studying the mechanical response of the human thorax submitted to ballistic impact is a challenging field of research. For ethical reasons, it is not possible to perform tests on the human body. Numerical simulations are therefore one of the alternatives for evaluating the mechanical response of the human thorax. In earlier research, a simplified human thorax submitted to low-velocity impacts without ballistic protection was modelled. Not all internal organs in the thorax were taken into account. The only considered organs were the heart, lungs, trachea and aorta, with the space between them b

The most common causes of splenic rupture are blunt injury and surgical intervention in abdominal cavity. Morphological investigation of the spleen often shows but a small capsular laceration as well as haemorrhage and granulocytic infiltration in microscopy of its margins. The laceration may be sometimes difficult to find. There are two types of microscopical haemorrhage. One in sinus-lacking subcapsular tissue zone, the other in deeper layers. In this case the tissue haemorrhage is diffuse, sometimes within or around the marginal zone. The sinuses are neither collapsed nor obturated by any m

Blunt trauma can cause a wide range of ocular injuries. An immediate evaluation of the potential damage may be impossible because of vitreous hemorrhage or may be ill-advised because of hyphema or damage to other ocular or orbital structures. One must remember that potentially severe injuries can be harbored in the recesses of the angle or far periphery of the retina. In any case of blunt trauma, although one eye may have more obvious signs of injury, an extensive examination of the fellow eye must always be included because less severe trauma may have resulted in serious injuries that can go

Patients presenting with laryngotracheal trauma can be in a life-threatening situation. Early recognition of the severity of the injury and, if necessary, surgical intervention within the first 24-48 h increases the chance of achieving a good functional late result. Preservation or restoration of voice and swallowing function is the long-term therapeutic goal. Precise assessment of the extent of the injury can be achieved using a combination of computed tomography and flexible laryngotracheoscopy. Symptoms often do not reflect the extent of the injury, which can vary from endolaryngeal hemorrh

Medical personnel should be able to recognize vascular injuries. Knowing the key signs of ischemia, namely pallor, pulselessness, pain, paresis, and paresthesia and the soft signs of vascular injury will help to prevent limb loss.

The fluorescent dye dichlorotriazinyl aminofluorescein will bind to amino groups of proteins covalently under physiological conditions. It has been used to dye the connective tissue around an ulcer or nonpenetrating, linear incision in the rabbit cornea and sclera, and the healing of the tissue has been examined up to 1 yr later. Sagittal sections were stained for light microscopy, and adjacent unstained sections were examined in the fluorescence microscope. The stained sections showed the reestablishment of the lamellar organization of the stromal collagen across the site of the incision; the
