Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium, L. var. strumarium) intoxication in swine: review and redefinition of the toxic principle.

Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) fed to feeder pigs was associated with acute to subacute hepatotoxicosis. Cotyledonary seedings fed at 0.75% to 3% of body weight or ground bur fed at 20% to 30% of the ration caused acute depression, convulsions, and death. Principle gross lesions were marked serofibrinous ascites, edema of the gallbladder wall, and lobular accentuation of the liver. Acute to subacute centrilobular hepatic necrosis was present microscopically. The previously reported toxic principle, hydroquinone, was not recovered from the plant or bur of X. strumarium. Authentic hydroquinone

Climate change impacts on Xanthium strumarium distribution: Integrating species distribution models with rhizosphere microbiome analysis in China.

Global environmental changes increasingly alter species distributions, yet their effects on plants serving both ecological and economic functions remain inadequately explored. We examined Xanthium strumarium, a species with medicinal and invasive properties, throughout China using integrated approaches: species distribution modeling (Biomod2), niche analysis (Ecospat), and rhizosphere microbiome profiling (Tax4Fun). Our findings demonstrate that human footprint index (66.6% variable importance), elevation, and topographic slope primarily determine current distribution patterns. Future climate

Sacrificing Knight for Pawn-Queen Promotion: Sonosensitive Nano-Xanthiums Orchestrate NO to Retain H2O2 for Antibiofilm Therapy.

Biofilm infections present escalating clinical challenges due to their intrinsic resistance to conventional treatments, underscoring the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. Here, we show a pioneering approach that leverages sacrificial nitric oxide (NO) to enhance hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) retention for antibiofilm therapy. H2O2 has the ability to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH), the most potent oxidants in nature, but it is often neutralized by H2O2 scavengers before •OH formation. Our design utilizes ultrasound irradiation to release NO from the biofilm-anchoring nano-xanthiums

Occurrence of plant sensitivity among patients of photodermatoses: a control-matched study of 156 cases from New Delhi.

BACKGROUND: Photodermatitis is an abnormal response to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The photoallergic contact dermatitis caused by plant allergens is a serious cause of morbidity in India. Airborne contact dermatitis is the classical presentation of plant-induced dermatosis, which may become difficult to differentiate from chronic actinic dermatitis in chronic cases. The rapid growth of parthenium weed in India and its ill effects on the population make it important to detect all cases of parthenium sensitivity, which in some cases might simulate photodermatitis. AIMS: This study aims to dete
