Pseudomonadaceae increased the tolerance of Listeria monocytogenes to sanitizers in multi-species biofilms.

The persistence of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in food processing facilities may be facilitated by the formation of multi-species biofilms by environmental microbiota. This study aimed to determine whether multi-species biofilm formation results in an increased tolerance of L. monocytogenes in biofilms to the sanitizers benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and peroxyacetic acid (PAA) at concentrations commonly used in food processing facilities. Biofilms composed of microbiota previously shown to co-occur with L. monocytogenes in tree fruit packing facilities (i.e., Pseudomonadaceae,

Metagenomics coupled with thermodynamic analysis revealed a potential way to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of the aerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification process under the hypoxic condition.

Aerobic methane (CH4) oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) is a promising wastewater treatment process for CH4 utilization and nitrogen removal. However, it is unclear which CH4-derived carbons are suitable for the AME-D process and how these organics are metabolized. In this study, metagenomics coupled with a thermodynamic model were used to explore the microorganisms and their metabolic mechanisms in an AME-D membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) with high nitrogen removal efficiency. Results revealed that the aerobic methanotrophs of Methylomonas with the CH4-based fermentation potential

Root Microbiome Assembly Underpins the Ecological Role of Emergent Macrophytes in a Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) depend on plant-microbe associations for pollutant transformation, yet the processes linking macrophyte identity to rhizosphere microbiome assembly remain insufficiently resolved. We compared bacterial communities associated with C. articulatus (Ca) and T. geniculata (Tg) roots with an unplanted treatment (Up) in pilot-scale CWs on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Bacterial communities were characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Co-occurrence networks, taxon-environment correlations, and the phylogenetic bin-based null model iCAMP were used to assess commu

The impact of microbiome dysbiosis on manganese-induced neurotoxicity: Brain metabolomics and multi-organ 16S rRNA profiling in mice.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential metal but becomes neurotoxic upon excessive exposure. Although emerging evidence links Mn toxicity to gut microbiome alterations, little is known about how Mn affects microbial communities across multiple mucosal sites or how these changes relate to brain metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the impact of long-term Mn exposure on microbiota across the oral, nasal, lung, and gut compartments and its association with striatal metabolic alterations. The mice were intranasally exposed to MnCl2 for four months. Microbiota composition was profiled by 16S rRNA se

First report of the emerging zoonotic agent Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica isolated from a retail frozen chicken in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica is an emerging zoonotic bacterium commensally living in larvae of particular flies. It has been associated with human and animal infections but never isolated from food. In the present study, a whole chicken carcass was rinsed in buffered peptone water which was then inoculated into BHI and the growth plated onto selective medium. Species identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS. Those bacteria identified as W. chitiniclastica were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing for confirmation and MEGA software was used to obtain their phylogenetic position. The finding

Glutaredoxin-like protein (GLP)-a novel bacteria sulfurtransferase that protects cells against cyanide and oxidative stresses.

The pathogen Xylella fastidiosa belongs to the Xanthomonadaceae family, a large group of Gram-negative bacteria that cause diseases in many economically important crops. A predicted gene, annotated as glutaredoxin-like protein (glp), was found to be highly conserved among the genomes of different genera within this family and highly expressed in X. fastidiosa. Analysis of the GLP protein sequences revealed three protein domains: one similar to monothiol glutaredoxins (Grx), an Fe-S cluster and a thiosulfate sulfurtransferase/rhodanese domain (Tst/Rho), which is generally involved in sulfur met

First case reports of Ignatzschineria (Schineria) indica associated with myiasis.

We report three cases of infection due to the Gram-negative rod Ignatzschineria (Schineria) indica involving bacteremia and the urinary tract. Two cases were clearly associated with maggot infestation, and the third could conceivably have had unrecognized maggot infestation of the urinary tract. We believe these cases to be the first I. indica infections reported in association with maggot infestation and myiasis.

Reduced arsenic availability in paddy soil through Fe-organic ligand complexation mediated by bamboo biochar.

The reuse of arsenic (As)-contaminated paddy fields is a global challenge because long-term flooding would result in As release due to the reductive dissolution of iron minerals. Biochar amendment is a common and effective remediation technique for As-contaminated paddy soil. However, the literature is still lacking in systematic research on the function of biochar in controlling the complexation of released dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron oxides and its synergistic impact on the availability of As in flooded paddy soil. In the present study, bamboo biochar was prepared at different py

Robust design of LAMP assays for in-field detection of major bacterial vascular diseases of banana.

Bacterial diseases of banana are a growing global threat, causing yield losses and increased management costs. Major diseases include Moko, banana blood disease (BBD), and banana Xanthomonas wilt (BXW), caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis, and Xanthomonas vasicola pv. musacearum, respectively. Effective surveillance requires point-of-care diagnostics such as loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for on-site use. We aimed to develop three LAMP assays to specifically detect the bacteria responsible for Moko, BBD and BXW, directly from banana tissues, u

Wastewater treatment plant effluent alters particle-associated bacterial assemblages in an intermittent stream.

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) can be point-sources of nutrients, organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and microbes to lotic environments, and the input of WWTP effluent can alter the activity and composition of stream microbial assemblages in the benthos and water column. Within the stream benthos, fine particulate matter (FPM) supports especially high levels of microbial activity, but the effect of WWTP effluents on the microbial communities specifically associated with benthic FPM in rivers has not been studied. The present work sought to address this knowledge gap by analyzing

Construction of a Tetracycline Degrading Bacterial Consortium and Its Application Evaluation in Laboratory-Scale Soil Remediation.

As an environmental pollutant, tetracycline (TC) can persist in the soil for years and damage the ecosystem. So far, many methods have been developed to handle the TC contamination. Microbial remediation, which involves the use of microbes to biodegrade the pollutant, is considered cost-efficient and more suitable for practical application in soil. This study isolated several strains from TC-contaminated soil and constructed a TC-degrading bacterial consortium containing Raoultella sp. XY-1 and Pandoraea sp. XY-2, which exhibited better growth and improved TC degradation efficiency compared wi
