Gross anatomical adaptations of the craniolateral forearm muscles in Tamandua mexicana (Xenarthra: Myrmecophagidae): development of accessory muscles and rete mirabile for its arterial supply.

The northern tamandua (Tamandua mexicana) is a xenarthran mammal with a distribution from Mexico to Peru. This species arrives to wildlife care centres due to illegal trafficking and attacks by domestic dogs, both of which are situations where the northern tamandua's thoracic limbs (forelimbs) can be affected. As such, it is necessary to have anatomical studies that allow us to perform better medical and surgical procedures. Among these, studies about the musculoskeletal system also aid in the muscular reconstructions of extinct species. The aim of this study was to characterize the craniolate

Anatomy and histology of the male reproductive tract and spermatogenesis fine structure in the lesser anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla, Myrmecophagidae, Xenarthra): morphological evidences of reproductive functions.

The anatomy and histology of the male genital tract of the lesser anteater were studied. Fine details of spermatozoa regarding their genesis and morphology were also studied in six adult specimens. The testes lie in the pelvic cavity. The deferent duct emerges from the epididymis and opens into the ejaculatory duct, which drains into the membranous urethra. Accessory glands (prostate, seminal vesicle and bulbourethral gland) are histologically similar to those described in other mammals. The short penis presents an urethral orifice, while the corpus spongiosum becomes thinner at the end indica

Novel herpesvirus potentially associated with oral lesions in a two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

The superorder Xenarthra comprises anteaters, sloths and armadillos, all endemic of the Americas. Despite their distinctive evolutionary history, information regarding viruses affecting this group remains scarce. Herein, we report a gammaherpesvirus infection in a two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) under human care that presented recurrent oral vesicular lesions and oral candidiasis. The gammaherpesvirus identified in oral swab sample likely represents a novel species, due to the large genetic divergence when compared to the closest sequences available on public databases, and its identific

Taxonomic and ecological assessment of an Antarctic Eocene Folivora (Mammalia) metacarpal using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics.

Here, we reassess the taxonomic affinities and functional morphology of TMM 44190-1, an isolated metacarpal II from the Eocene La Meseta Formation, Marambio (Seymour) Island, Antarctic Peninsula, previously referred to an indeterminate xenarthran. We evaluated its morphological similarities using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics. A principal component analysis, based on a sample of 50 metacarpals representing 38 taxa, including Paleogene terrestrial mammals from Antarctica and South America, as well as extant mammals exhibiting a wide range of terrestrial locomotor habits, was conduct

Respiratory System of the Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus): Macroscopic, Histological and Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis.

Relatively little research has been conducted regarding Choloepus didactylus and studies that have been done have mainly covered physiology and morphology, as well as studies on its respiratory system. The objective of this study was to describe the components of the respiratory system of the two-toed sloth and compare it with other species already described in the literature. For this purpose, eight adult animals were used. Macroscopic analyses were carried out on the organs that make up the respiratory system, which confirmed the existence of four cartilages of the larynx, trachea with an av

Morphological features of lower respiratory tract of nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus, Linnaeus, 1758).

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a mammal of the Xenarthra Superorder, which inhabits Central, South and North America. Few morphological descriptions are observed in this species, including the respiratory tract; therefore, the objective of this study was to describe morphologically the lower respiratory tract of the nine-banded armadillo. Five animals were dissected, and the macroscopic and microscopic aspects were analysed. In the anatomical analysis, the perfusion technique was performed with vinyl acetate and the fragments of tissue from respiratory organs (trachea, bro

Origin and Distribution of the Brachial Plexus Nerves in Northern Tamandua (Tamandua mexicana).

Tamandua mexicana is a species of the superorder Xenarthra that is found in many regions of Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. This species is important because it is a model for comparative studies of the evolutionary anatomy of xenarthrans. However, there are few anatomical studies on which to base these areas, such as the anatomy of the brachial plexus. Several studies use the brachial plexus anatomy for phylogenetic analysis and medical procedures. Thus, this study aimed to describe the origin and distribution of the brachial plexus in T. mexicana. Twelve specimens of T. mexica

Borderline leprosy in an experimentally infected armadillo.

Out of six armadillos infected intravenously with 4.66 x 10(8) M. leprae, one developed a delayed hypersensitivity tissue response with the formation of an epithelioid cell granuloma. It is suggested that, although 80% of armadillos are susceptible to infection with M. leprae, some among these susceptible ones will exhibit varying degrees of delayed hypersensitivity reactions. These animals may go through a borderline phase before ultimately undergoing lepromatous degeneration.

Pathology of Free-Ranging and Captive Brazilian Anteaters.

There is little information on the anatomical pathology of Brazilian anteaters. Considering the relevance of knowledge of diseases of these species for their conservation, the aim of this study was to describe pathological changes in 99 captive and free-ranging anteaters from the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas. Forty-two animals were killed on roads and 10 died from burns injuries. Other significant conditions included the metabolic diseases of iron storage disease, tissue mineralization and taurine deficiency, protozoan and metazoan infecti

RADIOGRAPHIC ANATOMY OF THE FORELIMB IN THE NORTHERN TAMANDUA (TAMANDUA MEXICANA).

The thoracic limb anatomy of anteaters in the family Myrmecophagidae is specialized for accessing termite and ant nests and for defense purposes. In the case of the northern tamandua (Tamandua mexicana), the forelimbs are also adapted for arboreal and terrestrial locomotion. Unfortunately, this species faces many conservation threats, such as habitat loss and traffic accidents, and injured individuals are frequently taken to wildlife rehabilitation centers. However, lack of knowledge of the radiographic osteoanatomy of this species may prevent appropriate management of injuries and thereby red

External and digestive system morphology of the Tamandua tetradactyla.

Collared anteater is present throughout the Brazilian territory, but its morphology is little known. This study aimed to trace its external biometric profile and its digestive system. Six cadavers (4 ± 0.16 kg) from Paraíba, Brazil, were used. The thoracic limbs were more robust when compared to pelvic. The length of the tail is below that described in specimens from south-eastern Brazil, probably due to the greater use of the tail suspension function in the leafier forests in this region. The tongue had no papillae and had keratinized squamous epithelium. The oesophagus was tubular with kerat

Morphological, Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Characterisation of the Penis in Free-Ranging Giant Anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) belongs to the superorder Xenarthra and is distributed throughout Central and South America. This animal is listed as 'vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. Studies on the reproduction of this species are essential because of its peculiarities; however, there is a lack of information on its reproductive aspects and the biotechnologies that can be applied to it. Morphological and histopathological descriptions of the reproductive organs of Myrmecophaga tridactyla are fundamental for determ

The organ of vision morphology of the southern two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus Linnaeus, 1758; Pilosa, Choloepodidae).

The Choloepus didactylus is a species belonging to the Choloepodidae family of the Folivora suborder. This study concerns the anatomical, morphometrical, histological and histochemical examination of the eye tunics, eyelids and orbital glands in the three adult Choloepus didactylus coming from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden. The cornea consists of four layers since Bowman's membrane was absent. The presence of palisades of Vogt formed from 14/15 to 20/21 layers of epithelial cells was demonstrated. Macroscopically, the tapetum lucidum was not identified, while degenerative choroidal tapetum luc

Uterine adenomyosis in southern three-banded armadillos (Tolypeutes matacus).

Uterine adenomyosis was diagnosed in five southern three-banded armadillos (Tolypeutes matacus) from four different zoological collections in North America between 1995 and 2012. Two cases were diagnosed after ovariohysterectomy and histopathologic evaluation of the uteri, and the remaining cases were identified incidentally at the time of postmortem examination. Animals ranged from 5 to 14 yr of age at the time of diagnosis. Of armadillos diagnosed before postmortem examination, clinical signs included weakness, collapse, anemia, and vulvar discharge. Histopathologic evaluation of the uteri r

IMAGING AND ANATOMIC ASPECTS OF THE COXOFEMORAL JOINT OF THE GIANT ANTEATER (MYRMECOPHAGA TRIDACTYLA).

This study evaluated the coxofemoral (CF) joint of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) through radiographic and ultrasound imaging and then dissection for proposed surgical approach to arthrotomy procedures. The study evaluated four isolated pelvic limbs fixed in 10% formaldehyde and six intact thawed carcasses. The radiographic assessment was performed with the carcass positioned in frog-legged ventrodorsal and lateral projections. The addition of ultrasound provided imaging of the CF joint. The articular elements presented similar characteristics to other domestic species, such as d

Macroscopic and histological aspects of the pharynx and larynx of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla Linnaeus, 1758).

Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is an endangered species that resides in much of Latin America, but it has been losing its habitat, especially in the Cerrado biome, where it constantly suffers traumas resulting from fires and roadkill. The anatomical knowledge of structures of the respiratory system is important for a better morphophysiological understanding of the species. Thus, this study aimed to perform the macroscopic and histomorphological description of the pharynx and larynx of the giant anteater. Twelve adult giant anteaters were used, three of them fixed in buffered formalin
