Xerostomia in patients with advanced cancer.

The aim of the study was to investigate the features of xerostomia in patients with advanced cancer. The protocol involved completion of the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, and measurement of the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSFR) and the stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR). One hundred twenty patients participated in the study. Xerostomia was the fourth most common symptom (78% of patients). It was associated with a poor performance status (P = 0.01). The usual cause of xerostomia was drug treatment. There was an association with the total number of drugs prescribed (P =

Scrub Typhus Presenting with Isolated Xerostomia.

Scrub typhus is a mite-borne rickettsial infection that typically presents with fever, rash, and eschar; however, atypical manifestations may lead to delayed or missed diagnosis. The present report involves a case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with persistent xerostomia (dry mouth) as the sole ongoing symptom at the time of evaluation, without rash, eschar, or ongoing fever. She had a history of outdoor exposure in an endemic area, and laboratory testing revealed transient liver dysfunction and hyponatremia associated with polydipsia. Although empiric antimicrobial therapy was not initi

Metabolic imaging biomarkers of postradiotherapy xerostomia.

PURPOSE: Xerostomia is a major complication of head and neck radiotherapy (RT). Available xerostomia measures remain flawed. [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose-labeled positron emission tomography-computed tomography (FDG-PET-CT) is routinely used for staging and response assessment of head and neck cancer. We investigated quantitative measurement of parotid gland FDG uptake as a potential biomarker for post-RT xerostomia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Ninety-eight locally advanced head and neck cancer patients receiving definitive RT underwent baseline and post-RT FDG-PET-CT on a prospective imaging trial.

[Radiation-induced xerostomia: prevention, treatment, perspectives].

Most of head and neck cancer patients will undergo radiotherapy. Xerostomia is probably its most frequent side effect. Subjective and objective criteria allow evaluating and grading xerostomia. New radiotherapy techniques and use of cytoprotectants can help to preserve salivary gland function. Parasym-pathicomimetics and saliva substitutes reduce symptoms. Strict mouth cleaning and fluoride's use prevent teeth deterioration and infections. Important breakthroughs have been made in the pathophysiology of xerostomia and new treatments are developed.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy and xerostomia.

Conformal radiation with intensity-modulated radiation therapy, IMRT, is a radiation technique that potentially can minimize the dose to salivary glands and thereby decrease the incidence of xerostomia. Precise target determination and delineation is most important when using salivary gland-sparing techniques of IMRT. The reduction of xerostomia may be achieved by sparing the salivary glands on the noninvolved oral cavity and keeping the mean parotid gland dose of < 26-30 Gy if the treatment of disease is not compromised and parotid function preservation is desired.

Specific xerostomia during Urbach-Wiethe disease.

We describe the case of a 59-year-old woman who had suffered from a typical Urbach-Wiethe disease since childhood and who complains of progressive mouth and ocular dryness since the age of 54 years. Xerostomia was severe with very poor salivation and was associated with a slight keratoconjunctivitis sicca. A specific lipoid proteinosis was evidenced in salivary glands (lower lip biopsy) with a PAS-positive hyalin-like deposit around vessels, capillaries and salivary gland canaliculi. An ultrastructural study showed the typical aspect of multilamination of the basal lamina of capillary vessels.

Radiation-induced xerostomia: is octreotide the solution?

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we looked for evidence that octreotide, a drug used specifically in acromegaly and other digestive pathologies, can have a radioprotective effect on salivary glands. This effect has already been proven on the pituitary gland, which is why we postulated that octreotide could act the same way on rat parotid glands. METHOD: A prospective randomized controlled study on animals was conducted. With a noninvasive technique, we collected saliva from the parotid glands of 18 anesthetized rats at time 0 (preirradiation) and 1 month (postirradiation). Each sampling technique la

Evaluation, differential diagnosis, and treatment of xerostomia.

The salivary component of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is defined as xerostomia (dry mouth). However, xerostomia is a common symptom associated with quantitative and qualitative changes in saliva, which are generally referred to as salivary hypofunction. This can be caused by various systemic diseases (including SS), anticholinergic effects of many drugs, psychological conditions, and physiological changes. Chronic salivary hypofunction is clinically significant because it can cause oral dysfunction, dental destruction, and mucosal infection. Evaluating patients complaining of xerostomia requires p

The establishment of a xerostomia clinic: a prospective study.

The study investigated the aetiological factors and management of patients who have xerostomia. The subjects were 100 consecutive patients referred to the Oral Medicine Unit for investigation of oral dryness. A detailed case history was recorded and patients underwent a systematic examination together with sialometry, haematological, biochemical and immunological investigations. Suspected cases of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) were referred for assessment by a rheumatologist and ophthalmologist. Objective evidence of salivary gland hypofunction was found in 39 patients. A definite diagnosis of prima

Xerostomia in older adults: a longitudinal study.

Although xerostomia in older adults has received substantial research attention, there have been few longitudinal studies of non-patient populations. Consequently, little is known about the incidence or course of this condition among this group. This paper reports the results of a longitudinal study designed to address these issues. In 1989, data on xerostomia were collected from 907 randomly-selected community dwelling adults aged 50 years and over. Three years later, 611 (71% of those presumed to be alive) were followed-up and data on xerostomia collected again. At baseline, 15.5% of these 6

Xerostomia and glossodynia in patients with autoimmune disorders.

Xerostomia presents a difficult challenge for the clinician to manage and a serious problem for the afflicted patient. Patients with dysfunctional or hypofunctional salivary or lacrimal glands suffer considerably both emotionally and physically. Because of the ever-increasing geriatric population, health practitioners can expect to encounter a substantial number of patients with xerostomia or salivary gland disorders. Early detection and appropriate management will improve the quality of these patient's lives.

A brief xerostomia inventory for young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Xerostomia (dry mouth) is a common condition that negatively impacts life quality for adults of all ages. Yet, xerostomia has primarily been studied among older adults and populations at high risk of dry mouth, with no widely-available self-reported instrument to assess xerostomia accurately among younger populations. This study aimed to develop a brief xerostomia assessment tool specifically designed for young adults. METHODS: Students ages 18-24 at two California (USA) public universities (N = 278) completed a cross-sectional survey that included a 14-item xerostomia inventory, i

SIALORRHEA AND XEROSTOMIA IN PARKINSON'S DISEASE PATIENTS.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is generally considered as a primary movement disorder, but the majority of patients also suffer from non-motor oral, salivary symptoms. The most common salivary symptoms, sialorrhea and xerostomia, have a considerable negative impact on the quality of life. Although these symptoms are completely opposite ones, both significantly impair oral health of patients. Sialorrhea is defined as an increased amount of the retaining saliva. It is related to salivary overproduction, or it may be associated with impaired clearance of saliva. Opposed to sialorrhea, xerostomia is sub

Fat Grafting as a Novel Treatment for Xerostomia.

PURPOSE: Within the context of xerostomia, there is evidence that adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) can differentiate into salivary gland cells in the appropriate environment. The purpose of this study was to preliminarily investigate whether fat grafting as practiced in the United States would be an effective treatment for xerostomia. METHODS: Patients were selected for the study if they were seeking treatment for xerostomia after radiation treatment to the head and neck for cancer treatment. Fat grafting was performed in bilateral parotid and submandibular glands. Visual Analog Scale (VAS)

Factors associated with xerostomia in perimenopausal women.

OBJECTIVES: Various oral symptoms, including xerostomia and burning mouth syndrome, may occur in menopausal women. These symptoms reduce quality of life (QOL). However, the actual condition of xerostomia after menopause is not clear. The purpose of this study was to reveal the factors associated with xerostomia in perimenopausal women. METHODS: Participants included 118 outpatients (mean age, 49.9 ± 3.2 years; range, 45-55 years) at a department of gynecology in Japan. Information was collected concerning age, medical history, medications, menstrual status, and history of treatment for climac

Xerostomia and Taste Alterations in COVID-19.

A recent letter published in the Ear, Nose & Throat Journal called attention to the hypothesis that the xerostomia reported in patients with the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) occurs due to the neuroinvasive and neurotropism potential of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In fact, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2), the main site of entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the cell, was found to be present in the ductal elements of salivary gland and several other tissues. However, some points are worth to be addressed.

Xerostomia in patients on chronic hemodialysis: An update.

Xerostomia, or dryness of oral cavity, is relatively common in patients on chronic hemodialysis and significantly impairs their quality of life. Xerostomia is often the consequence of reduced salivary flow resulting from atrophy and fibrosis of the salivary glands, an event that is of uncertain origin. Many medications commonly used in dialysis patients may also cause or exacerbate xerostomia. Its consequences may be serious and disturbing and include difficulties in chewing, swallowing, tasting, and speaking; increased risk of oral disease, including lesions of the mucosa, gingiva and tongue;
