The functional relationship between yawning and vigilance.

BACKGROUND: Although yawning is a ubiquitous and phylogenetically old phenomenon, its origin and purpose remain unclear. The study aimed at testing the widely held hypothesis that yawning is triggered by drowsiness and brings about a reversal or suspension of the process of falling asleep. METHODS: Subjects complaining of excessive sleepiness were spontaneously yawning while trying to stay awake in a quiet and darkened room. Changes in their electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) associated with yawning were compared to changes associated with isolated voluntary body move

Yawning and Penile Erection Frequencies Are Resilient to Maternal Care Manipulation in the High-Yawning Subline of Sprague-Dawley Rats.

Yawning is a stereotyped behavioral pattern characterized by wide opening of the mouth associated with deep inspiration followed by short expiration. All vertebrate species yawn, but with low frequencies. We obtained two sublines of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats by a strict inbreeding process: one with a high-yawning frequency (HY) of 20 yawns/h, which is one order of magnitude higher with respect to the low-yawning frequency (LY) subline, with 2 yawns/h. Outbred SD rats had a yawning frequency of 1 yawn/h. HY dams had a different organization of maternal care with respect to that displayed by LY a

Hearing Someone Laugh and Seeing Someone Yawn: Modality-Specific Contagion of Laughter and Yawning in the Absence of Others.

Laughter and yawning can both occur spontaneously and are highly contagious forms of social behavior. When occurring contagiously, laughter and yawning are usually confounded with a social situation and it is difficult to determine to which degree the social situation or stimulus itself contribute to its contagion. While contagious yawning can be reliably elicited in lab when no other individuals are present, such studies are more sparse for laughter. Moreover, laughter and yawning are multimodal stimuli with both an auditory and a visual component: laughter is primarily characterized as a ste

Factors affecting yawning frequencies in preterm neonates.

Yawning is a long neglected behavioral pattern, but it has recently gained an increasing interdisciplinary attention for its theoretical implications as well as for its potential use as a clinical marker, with particular regard to perinatal neurobehavioral assessment. The present study investigated the factors affecting yawning frequencies in hospitalized preterm neonates (N = 58), in order to distinguish the effects of hunger and sleep-related modulations and to examine the possible impact of demographic and clinical variables on yawning frequencies. Results showed that preterm neonates yawne

Associated movements in hemiplegic limbs during yawning.

BACKGROUND: Yawning is phylogenetically ancient and associated with a stereotyped behavioral pattern. OBJECTIVE: To describe the pattern of associated movements observed in hemiplegic limbs during yawning and its relationship to gender, laterality of hemiplegia and muscle tone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational study was designed for 75 patients with newly detected anterior circulatory stroke due to ischemia or hemorrhage in the internal capsule region. The subjects were free from any arthropathy, autoimmune disease, muscular disorders and injury/deformity. RESULTS: There were 48 males

Yawning-related tremor in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Yawning-related tremor (YRT), tremor triggered by or exacerbated during yawning, has been described anecdotally in Parkinson's disease (PD), but never systematically studied. We aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical associations of YRT in PD. In this cross-sectional study, 119 PD patients and 74 controls completed a structured questionnaire. YRT was significantly more common in PD patients (18.5 %) than in controls (2.7 %) (p = 0.001). YRT prevalence was especially high in PD patients with co-existent essential tremor (41.2 %) and in those with probable REM sleep behavior disorder (68

Manipulating neck temperature alters contagious yawning in humans.

The existence of yawning across a diverse array of species has led many researchers to postulate its neurological significance. One hypothesis, which has garnered recent support, posits that yawns function to cool the brain by flushing hyperthermic blood away from the skull while simultaneously introducing a cooler arterial supply. The current study tested this hypothesis by examining how manipulations aimed at modifying carotid artery temperature, which in turn directly alters cranial temperature, influences contagious yawning in humans. Participants held either a warm (46 °C), cold (4 °C) or

Hand up! Yawn and raise your arm.

BACKGROUND: In some cases of hemiplegia, the initiation of yawning is associated with involuntary raising of the paralysed arm. Reports are scarce in the literature, probably because the phenomenon has largely been overlooked. METHODS: We studied six patients from two neurologic units, and compared them with published cases from the last 200 years. Brain imaging typically shows a small vascular lesion most often located in the internal capsule. RESULTS: After comparison with experimental models in cats, we suggest that damage to the cortico-neocerebellar tract of the extrapyramidal system di

Is it a Match? Yawn Contagion and Smile Mimicry in Toddlers.

Automatic behavioral matching includes Rapid Facial Mimicry (RFM) and Yawn Contagion (YC) that occur when the facial expression of an individual acts as a 'mirror social releaser' and induces the same facial expression in the observer (within 1 s for RFM, and minutes for YC). Motor replication has been linked to coordination and emotional contagion, a basic form of empathy. We investigated the presence and modulating factors of Rapid Smile Mimicry (RSM) and YC in infants/toddlers from 10 to 36 months at the nursery 'Melis' (Turin, Italy). In February-May 2022, we gathered audio and/or video of

Contagious yawning, empathy, and their relation to prosocial behavior.

Humans express facial mimicry across a variety of actions. This article explores a distinct example, contagious yawning, and the links to empathy and prosocial behavior. Prior studies have suggested that there is a positive link between empathy and the susceptibility to contagious yawning. However, the existing evidence has been sparse and contradictory. We present results from 2 laboratory studies conducted with 171 (Study 1) and 333 (Study 2) student volunteers. Subjects were video-recorded while watching muted videos of individuals yawning, scratching, or laughing. Empathy was measured usin

Yawning and Its Temperature-Dependent Modulation in Leopard Geckos.

Yawning is a stereotyped behavior widely observed in vertebrates, serving as an adaptation to the environment. Previous research has highlighted the correlations between yawning and physiological arousal or temperature regulation. However, the majority of those studies have primarily focused on endothermic animals. Thus far, the function of yawning in ectothermic animals remains unclear. In this study, we observed the behavior of leopard geckos, Eublepharis macularius, ectothermic reptiles, over a period of 3 days under constant ambient temperatures of 25°C, 30°C, or 35°C. By investigating the

Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans and Excessive yawning From Tumefactive Demyelination.

We present a case and video of a 31-year-old man with biopsy-confirmed tumefactive demyelination affecting the right internal capsule causing left hemiplegia, excessive yawning, and the curious but well-described phenomenon of parakinesia brachialis oscitans (PBO) with transient tonic elevation of his paralyzed arm while yawning. PBO is most commonly reported in ischemic stroke with internal capsule or pontomedullary brainstem lesions. Our case uniquely demonstrates this phenomenon in the case of tumefactive demyelination. We also highlight excessive yawning which has also been described in mu

Fracture of mandible during yawning in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder characterised by fragility and multiple fractures of bones. Clinical signs and symptoms vary depending on the type of disease. Fractures of facial bones are rare compared with load-bearing long bones. We report a case of fracture of the mandible during yawning which was managed by open reduction and internal fixation.

A critical view of the yawn-sigh as a voice therapy technique.

The purpose of this study was to take a critical look at a voice therapy technique known as the yawn-sigh. The voiced sigh as an approach in voice therapy has had increased use in recent years, particularly with problems of vocal hyperfunction. In this study, the physiology of the yawn-sigh was studied with video nasoendoscopy in eight normal subjects; their taped voices were also studied acoustically for possible fundamental frequency and format changes in producing selected vowels under normal and sigh conditions. Although each subject was given a model by the examiner of a yawn-sigh, one of

[Yawning in a case with transsecting glioma of the pons (author's transl)].

A patient with ponsglioma got completely tetraplegic and plegic in all muscles innervated by the caudal brainstem nerves (locked-in syndrome). He could not open or close the mouth, but he was able to yawn. It is concluded that the motivation of yawning stems from the sleep inducing system in the region of the raphe-nuclei and is projected directly to the nuclei of the caudal brainstem nerves.

Prenatal behavioral contagion through maternal yawning and fetal resonance.

Yawning is a phylogenetically preserved and highly stereotyped behavior observed across vertebrates.1 In humans, it emerges early in development, as it is already present prenatally.2,3 Qualitative studies show that fetal yawns display a structured motor pattern closely resembling adult yawns, suggesting a role in early sensorimotor organization,4,5 and they have been proposed to support the maturation of brainstem central pattern generators and early synaptic development.6,7 Due to its early emergence in development, prenatal yawning has largely been interpreted as driven by endogenous progra

PURPOSE: To explore risk factors for the yawning response induced by the intravenous administration of thiopental during the induction of general anesthesia. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cohort of 1322 patients who underwent elective surgery under general anesthesia plus intravenous thiopental. The data collected were: (a) the patients' demographic findings (age, sex, height, weight, cigarette smoking, hypertension, and presence of cerebral lesion), and (b) anesthesia-related findings (the kind of preanesthetic medication, i.e., atropine, epidural lidocaine, priming dose of vecuronium, fe
