[Yersinia pestis. Bacteriology].

The author discusses the evolution in the classification of the bacterium, responsible for plague: first a classification based on phenotypic characteristics, later based on genotypic characteristics, to finally arrive at an evolutionist classification. He treats the seven species of the genus Yersinia that can be distinguished by DNA hybridization. He examines the issue of sequencing and decoding the chromosome and mentions research regarding the phenomenon that the metabolism of the organisms modifies as a reaction to signals of their changing environment. Furthermore the author discusses th

Yersinia enterocolitica Septicemia.

Human Yersinia enterocolitica septicemia is an uncommon condition. Four new cases are reported here and a review is made of 51 others taken from medical literature. Septicemia caused by this microorganism occurs more frequently in the young and in the elderly, and usually involves patients havig previous liver or blood disorders, diabetes mellitus, and other debilitating diseases. Clinically it is indistinguishable from sepsis caused by other organisms of Enterobacteriaceae, but it is important that the clinician bear its existence in mind, since Yersinia enterocolitica strains are usually res

Characterization of chromosomal regions conserved in Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and lost by Yersinia pestis.

The transformation of the enteropathogenic bacterium Yersinia pseudotuberculosis into the plague bacillus, Yersinia pestis, has been accompanied by extensive genetic loss. This study focused on chromosomal regions conserved in Y. pseudotuberculosis and lost during its transformation into Y. pestis. An extensive PCR screening of 78 strains of the two species identified five regions (R1 to R5) and four open reading frames (ORFs; orf1 to orf4) that were conserved in Y. pseudotuberculosis and absent from Y. pestis. Their conservation in Y. pseudotuberculosis suggests a positive selective pressure

Yersinia Is Not Just the Plague: A Case Report of Yersiniosis Caused by Yersinia enterocolitica.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a Gram-negative bacterium that typically causes self-limiting gastrointestinal infections but can sometimes lead to systemic complications, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. This report describes a rare case of a 60-year-old farmer who developed enteric bacteremia, renal impairment, and pulmonary manifestations, likely due to the consumption of undercooked pork. Despite lacking common predisposing factors, the patient presented with a sore throat, joint pain, abdominal discomfort, and a characteristic erythematous rash. Extensive diagnostic workup, including b

Prevalence of pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in wild boars in Switzerland.

Between October 2007 and March 2008, 153 wild boars shot in the Canton of Geneva in Switzerland were sampled. Fifty-one percent of the animals were males and 49% were females. The age of most (81%) animals varied between 6months and 2years. Prevalence of enteropathogenic Yersinia in tonsils and faeces was studied using culture and PCR methods and in tissue fluid of tonsils using an ELISA system. Prevalence of anti-Yersinia antibodies in tissue fluid was 65%. Detection rate of enteropathogenic Yersinia in tonsils of 153 wild boars by real-time PCR was 44%. Turning Yersinia pathogenesis outside in: subversion of macrophage function by intracellular yersiniae.

Three bacterial species within the genus Yersinia are causative agents of human disease. Yersinia pestis is transmitted by fleas or in aerosols, infects regional lymph nodes or lungs, and causes the highly lethal disease known as plague. Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are enteric pathogens most commonly associated with self-limiting infections of the mesenteric lymph nodes. Although Y. pestis and the enteropathogenic Yersinia species utilize different modes of transmission and cause different diseases, they rely on a common set of "core" virulence determinants to succe

The ability to replicate in macrophages is conserved between Yersinia pestis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Yersinia pestis, the agent of plague, has arisen from a less virulent pathogen, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, by a rapid evolutionary process. Although Y. pestis displays a large number of virulence phenotypes, it is not yet clear which of these phenotypes descended from Y. pseudotuberculosis and which were acquired independently. Y. pestis is known to replicate in macrophages, but there is no consensus in the literature on whether Y. pseudotuberculosis shares this property. We investigated whether the ability to replicate in macrophages is common to Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis or is a

Yersinia pestis, the cause of plague, is a recently emerged clone of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Plague, one of the most devastating diseases of human history, is caused by Yersinia pestis. In this study, we analyzed the population genetic structure of Y. pestis and the two other pathogenic Yersinia species, Y. pseudotuberculosis and Y. enterocolitica. Fragments of five housekeeping genes and a gene involved in the synthesis of lipopolysaccharide were sequenced from 36 strains representing the global diversity of Y. pestis and from 12-13 strains from each of the other species. No sequence diversity was found in any Y. pestis gene, and these alleles were identical or nearly identical to al

Pathogenicity and virulence of Yersinia.

The genus Yersinia includes human, animal, insect, and plant pathogens as well as many symbionts and harmless bacteria. Within this genus are Yersinia enterocolitica and the Yersinia pseudotuberculosis complex, with four human pathogenic species that are highly related at the genomic level including the causative agent of plague, Yersinia pestis. Extensive laboratory, field work, and clinical research have been conducted to understand the underlying pathogenesis and zoonotic transmission of these pathogens. There are presently more than 500 whole genome sequences from which an evolutionary foo

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in an alpaca.

A 6-year-old female huacaya alpaca was referred to the clinic for evaluation with a 1-month history of rapid weight loss, inappetence, lethargy, and severe leukocytosis refractory to medical management. Physical examination revealed a body condition score of 1 out of 5 and a large, firm structure palpable in the right caudoventral abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed 3 masses with hyperechoic, swirling centers. The largest mass measured 15 cm in diameter with a 2-centimeter capsule, and extended from right of midline into the left inguinal region. Transrectal ultrasonograph

Physiology of Yersinia pestis.

This chapter outlines the physiology of Yersinia pestis with emphasis on identifying unique functions required for tissue invasion and acute disease. These activities are opposed to often incompatible processes expressed by very closely related Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, which causes localized gastrointestinal infection. Gain of new information in Y. pestis entailed lateral transfer of plasminogen activator and anti-phagocytic capsular antigen via the plasmids pPCP and pMT, respectively, and derepression of the pigmentation locus facilitating colonization of the flea vector. The ability to s

Yersinia pestis and plague.

Yersinia pestis is the aetiological agent of plague, a disease of humans that has potentially devastating consequences. Evidence indicates that Y. pestis evolved from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, an enteric pathogen that normally causes a relatively mild disease. Although Y. pestis is considered to be an obligate pathogen, the lifestyle of this organism is surprisingly complex. The bacteria are normally transmitted to humans from a flea vector, and Y. pestis has a number of mechanisms which allow survival in the flea. Initially, the bacteria have an intracellular lifestyle in the mammalian hos

Yersinia pestis and the plague.

Yersinia pestis is the cause of plague, an illness that may manifest in bubonic, pneumonic, or septicemic form. Plague has killed an estimated 200 million humans throughout history, and plague is endemic in many areas of the world. Approximately 2,000 cases of plague are reported each year to the World Health Organization, and concern has been raised about the possible use of Y pestis as an agent of bioterrorism. The genome of Y pestis has been sequenced, including the 3 virulence plasmids, pPst, pLcr, and pFra, and advances have been made in understanding the bacterial pathogenesis of Y pesti

[Bacteriocinogeny in Yersinia enterocolitica].

Bacteriocinogeny was found in 19.8 per cent of Y. enterocolitica strains tested. It was designated by the authors as enterocoliticacinogeny and the substance produced by the pathogen was named enterocoliticacine. Bacteriocinogeny was found among the collection strains isolated in the South Primorye and not among the strains isolated abroad. Some cultures of Y. enterocolitica isolated abroad and in the South Primorye were used as indicator strains for revealing enterocoliticacinogeny. Enterocoliticacine inhibited growth only of some strains of Y. enterocolitica and had no inhibitory effect on g

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis-Associated Myositis.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (Y. pstb.) is a Gram-negative pathogen associated with gastrointestinal infections, such as enterocolitis. While complications like reactive arthritis can occur, progression to myositis is extremely rare. This report describes a five-year-old boy who developed myositis following a Y. pstb. infection. The patient presented with a five-day history of abdominal pain, fever, and leg pain that progressed to muscle weakness, which affected his ability to walk. Laboratory results showed elevated inflammatory markers, and stool cultures confirmed Y. pstb. infection. Magneti
