[Yoga as an intervention for chronic pain].

The use of yoga, especially as an intervention for chronic pain, is increasing worldwide. Available data on chronic low back pain, within limits also for chronic neck pain and certain types of headache, show statistically significant positive effects related to pain intensity and pain-related impairments. The data provide evidence that yoga is at least equal in efficacy and safety to other exercise interventions as well as individualized physical therapy. The dose of the intervention seems to be of secondary importance, but the establishment of a long-term independent practice after initial su

Yoga and Healthcare in the United Kingdom.

The emergence of yoga therapy in the United Kingdom began about 45 years ago with the emergence of yoga therapy organizations that offered both treatment and training. The integration of yoga into the National Health Service (NHS) is gradually happening Because: (a) yoga research supports its efficacy as a cost-effective, preventive and complementary treatment for a host of non-communicable diseases; and (b) the escalating economic burden of long-term conditions is overwhelming the NHS. The NHS is actively developing 'sustainability and transformation plans' that include yoga. Chief among thes

Development of a Yoga-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation (Yoga-CaRe) Programme for Secondary Prevention of Myocardial Infarction.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after myocardial infarction is highly effective. It is unavailable in public hospitals in India due to limited resources. Our objective was to develop a scalable model of CR for India based on yoga, which could also appeal to some groups with low uptake of CR (e.g., ethnic minorities, women, and older people) globally. The intervention was developed using a structured process. A literature review and consultations with yoga experts, CR experts, and postmyocardial infarction patients were conducted to systematically identify and shortlist appropriate yoga exercises a

Who uses yoga and why? Who teaches yoga? Insights from a national survey in New Zealand.

Introduction Globally, yoga has gained popularity as a health-promoting and disease-prevention discipline. The common health conditions prompting yoga use include musculoskeletal disorders, mental health conditions, asthma, fibromyalgia, arthritis, diabetes, and cancers. Although the therapeutic benefits of using yoga are well documented, little is known about the characteristics of yoga instructors (YIs) and yoga users (YUs) in New Zealand (NZ). Aim This paper seeks to profile the characteristics of NZ YIs and YUs and explore reasons for yoga use. Methods Online surveys for YIs and YUs were c

Yoga-based lifestyle intervention for antenatal depression (YOGA-D): study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression during pregnancy is associated with pre-term labor, low birthweight, post-partum depression and adverse child outcomes. There are concerns about the safety of anti-depressant medications during pregnancy. Many pregnant women with antenatal depression are neither aware about their depression nor do they have access to non-pharmacological interventions for depression. Evidence suggests that pre-natal yoga can improve antenatal depression. Yoga is native to the Indian culture and women can practice yoga as a 'self-care' intervention with minimal training. There is no study

OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare the demographic, health behavior, and cardiometabolic risk factor characteristics of participants who report 1) participating in yoga, 2) not participating yoga, or 3) are inactive, using a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. DESIGN: Study participants were from the 1999-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who self-reported participation in yoga (n = 74), no-yoga (n = 3,753) or were inactive (n = 1,285). Sudarshan kriya yoga: Breathing for health.

Breathing techniques are regularly recommended for relaxation, stress management, control of psychophysiological states, and to improve organ function. Yogic breathing, defined as a manipulation of breath movement, has been shown to positively affect immune function, autonomic nervous system imbalances, and psychological or stress-related disorders. The aim of this study was to assess and provide a comprehensive review of the physiological mechanisms, the mind-body connection, and the benefits of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) in a wide range of clinical conditions. A Comprehensive Review of Yoga Research in 2020.

Objectives: Accumulated evidence garnered in the last few decades has highlighted the role of yoga in health and disease. The overwhelming mortality and morbidity mediated by noncommunicable epidemics such as heart disease and cancer have fostered a search for mechanisms to attenuate them. Despite overwhelming success in acute care, the efficacy of modern medicines has been limited on this front. Yoga is one of the integrative therapies that has come to light as having a substantial role in preventing and mitigating such disorders. It thus seems trite to analyze and discuss the research advanc

Role of Yoga in the Management of Premature Ejaculation.

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) poses a significant challenge for gynecological cancer survivors. However, information on its long-term outcomes remains limited. Recently, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), by which patients assess cancer treatment-related side effects, have been developed. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of CIPN associated with paclitaxel and carboplatin (TC) therapy using PRO. METHODS: Patients with ovarian, corpus uteri, cervical, and other gynecological cancers who underwent surgery were included in the study, regardless of

Psychological Benefits of Yoga for Female Inmates.

Female inmates involved in the Yoga Prison Project at two correctional facilities in South Carolina served as subjects. Inmates were selected from those who applied to participate in a ten-week trauma-focused yoga program. To create control and experimental groups, inmates who requested to participate were randomly assigned to be in the class (Treatment Group, n = 33) or a waitlist (Control Group, n = 17). Inmates on the waitlist subsequently joined the next class, so all who applied and were eligible participated in a yoga class. Measures of stress, depression, self control, anxiety, self awa

The Psychology of Yoga Practitioners: A Cluster Analysis.

Yoga practitioners (N = 261) completed the revised Expression of Spirituality Inventory (ESI) and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire. Cluster analysis revealed three clusters: Cluster A scored high on all four spiritual constructs. They had high positive evaluations of their appearance, but a lower orientation towards their appearance. They tended to have a high evaluation of their fitness and health, and higher body satisfaction. Cluster B showed lower scores on the spiritual constructs. Like Cluster A, members of Cluster B tended to show high positive evaluations of appea

The effects of yoga on mood in psychiatric inpatients.

The effects of yoga on mood were examined in 13 psychiatric inpatients at New Hampshire Hospital. Participants completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) prior to and following participation in a yoga class. Analyses indicated that participants reported significant improvements on all five of the negative emotion factors on the POMS, including tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, fatigue-inertia, and confusion-bewilderment. There was no significant change on the sixth POMS factor, vigor-activity. Improvements in mood were not related to gender or diagnosis. The results sugg
