Primary yolk sac tumor of the urachus.

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms originating from the urachus are rare. The most common urachal malignancy is adenocarcinoma, whereas extragonadal germ cell tumors, primarily of the urachus, are an extremely rare finding. OBJECTIVE: To describe a primary yolk sac tumor (YST) of the urachus in an adult. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old woman presented with 6 months of pelvic pain associated with a sensation of progressive mass growth. At the time of tumor resection, the tumor was found to be attached by a pedicle to the dome of the bladder, with no injury to the adjacent organs. Pathological study showed a

Pure yolk-sac tumor of the lung.

Primary germ cell tumors of the chest often localize in the anterior mediastinal compartment. Such tumors originating from lungs and pleura are rare. Chest tomography revealed a mass in the middle lobe of the right lung in a 25-year-old man. A middle lobe medial segmentectomy was performed, and chemotherapy was applied postoperatively.

Primary yolk sac tumor of the urachus.

Pure yolk sac tumor is the most common malignant gonadal tumor of infants and toddlers. However, the majority of extragonadal germ cell tumors in the midline are either seminomas (germinomas) or teratomas, and pure yolk sac tumors account for only a small fraction of these lesions. To date, only 1 primary urachal pure yolk sac tumor has been reported in the literature. We describe another case, occurring in a 7-month-old male infant who presented with a rapidly enlarging intra-abdominal tumor with marked engorgement of the superficial venous plexus around the umbilicus. With periodic follow-up

Testicular yolk sac carcinoma in a calf.

A testicular yolk sac carcinoma (YSCA) was diagnosed in a 28-day-old male Japanese black calf. Macroscopically, the abdominal cavity was filled with reddish gelatinous masses of various sizes. There were no testes in the scrotum or pelvic cavity. Histologically, the masses consisted of the tissues showing a variety of patterns; loose reticular network, pseudopapillary arrangement, festoon, solid nest, and labyrinthine pattern. Tumor cells were round to oval, with single central or polar nuclei with sharply defined nuclear borders and deeply basophilic chromatin. Tumor cells sometimes had glyco

Endodermal origin of yolk-sac-derived teratomas.

Mutant mice deficient in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were used to induce teratomas. This enzyme is linked to the X chromosome, which can be inactivated in female embryo. The differences in the enzyme activity between yolk sac mesoderm and embryo versus yolk sac endoderm can be detected in female concepti by using appropriate crosses of wild-type and G6PD-deficient mice. Histochemical study showed that the dual cell population was observed in heterozygous embryos and in the embryomas derived from them. The teratomas derived from the corresponding yolk sac, however, were G6PD-positive from

Yolk sac ovarian cancer with mesenteric metastases.

We present a rare case of mesenteric metastases of yolk sac ovarian cancer in an early adolescent girl. The patient initially presented with abdominal distension. The patient underwent physical and diagnostic testing, which yielded findings indicative of a malignant ovarian tumour (solid cystic mass and increased levels of tumour markers). Surgery was performed and histological examination revealed a yolk sac tumour that had spread to the mesentery. Chemotherapy was administered. Yolk sac ovarian cancer metastases usually occur in nearby structures; however, mesenteric metastases are rare.

Pure yolk sac tumor of sacrococcygeal region.

The sacrococcygeal region is the most common site for the extragonadal germ cell tumors comprising seminomatous and non-seminomatous tumors. Seminomatous tumors are seminomas, and non-seminomatous tumors comprise mainly teratoma (mature and immature), yolk sac tumor (YST), embryonal carcinoma (EC), and choriocarcinoma. These tumors occur in newborns, infants, and adolescents. Other common sites for extragonadal germ cell tumors are the brain and mediastinum, although they may occur anywhere in the body. These tumors may occur in mixed as well as pure form. So, sectioning from different areas s

Mediastinal yolk sac tumor infiltrating the heart.

BACKGROUND: As a rare tumor, yolk sac tumor is a type of neoplasm that appears like the yolk sac, extraembryonic mesenchyme, and allantois. The mediastinum is the second most frequent area after the gonadal area. CASE REPORT: We present an extremely rare case of 15 years old boy with mediastinal yolk sac tumor. The boy came with the chief complaint of swelling of the neck and face. Computed tomography scan of the chest revealed bulky mass with a cystic component that infiltrated the heart. The diagnosis of mediastinal yolk sac tumor was made after core needle biopsy. Histopathologic analysis

Malignant sacrococcygeal yolk sac (endodermal sinus) tumor.

We report a 2 1/2 years old female child who presented with Malignant Sacrococcygeal Yolk sac (Endodermal Sinus) tumor as presacral mass with ulceration of overlying skin. Her ultrasonography (USG)abdomen revealed a huge presecral mass with irregular margins extending in to the pelvis, pushing the rectum antero-laterally. CT scanning of abdomen confirmed USG finding with out enlargement of retroperitoneal lymph nodes and no involvement of the liver. Serum AFP was abnormally elevated. The tumor was excised along with Coccyx in-toto through posterior approach dividing the sacrum and 3-Drugs (VAC

Multipotentiality of yolk-sac carcinoma cell clones.

Yolk-sac carcinoma (YSCa) clones were isolated by manual cloning under visual control. By morphology, immunohistology and histochemistry the clones were shown to differentiate in vitro into visceral and parietal yolk-sac cells and in vivo into visceral and parietal yolk-sac cells, trophoblast and mesenchyme. Trophoblast and mesenchyme were only recorded in rat YSCa derived from displaced yolk sac but not in embryo-derived YSCA. Hence YSCa cells displaying a visceral and parietal yolk-sac pattern as well as the trophoblastic and the mesenchymal structures should have a common cell ancestor.

In vitro studies on the effect of yolk sac antisera on functions of the visceral yolk sac: I. Pinocytosis and transport of small molecules.

The production of congenital malformations by the administration of teratogenic antisera to pregnant animals has been reported from many laboratories. This work has focused our attention on the importance of the yolk sac placenta in supporting the rat embryo during early organogenesis and the significance of yolk sac dysfunction in rodent teratogenesis. The studies reported in this article deal with the effect of teratogenic antisera on the process of yolk sac transport; specifically pinocytosis (as measured by 14C-sucrose uptake) and small-molecule transport utilizing 14C-alpha-aminoisobutyri

CD34+ endothelial cell lines derived from murine yolk sac induce the proliferation and differentiation of yolk sac CD34+ hematopoietic progenitors.

Embryonic hematopoiesis is initiated in part in the blood islands of the yolk sac. Previous confocal microscopic analysis has shown that the CD34 antigen, a mucin-like cell surface glycoprotein that is expressed by hematopoietic progenitors and all endothelial cells of the adult and embryo, is also found on a subset of luminal hematopoietic-like cells in the yolk sac blood islands as well as on the vascular endothelium lining these early hematopoietic locations. We show here that, as in all other hematopoietic sites thus far examined, immunoaffinity-purified CD34+ nonadherent cells from murine

Extragonadal yolk sac tumor outside of the midline of the body: a case report of a child with a yolk sac tumor of the pontocerebellar angle.

Yolk sac tumor is a rare germ cell neoplasm occurring mainly in the gonads. Extragonadal yolk sac tumor is a very rare malignancy; its main distribution is along the midline of the body at three principal sites: mediastinum, central nervous system and retroperitoneum. Most yolk sac tumors are diagnosed between seven months and three years of age. We report a case of primary yolk sac tumor in a 13-month-old child. The tumor was located in the pontocerebellar angle, an atypical location that may not have suggested a yolk sac tumor as first diagnosis. We want to highlight the importance of perfor

Ovarian yolk sac tumor in a premenarchal girl.

Yolk sac tumors are highly malignant and commonly affect the ovaries, with a median age of occurrence of 23 years. We describe the case of an ovarian yolk sac tumor in a 12-year-old premenarchal girl suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis and chronic spontaneous urticaria, which presented as a rapidly growing solid cystic formation in the hypogastrium with an extreme increase in alpha fetoprotein (52,778 mg/ml). After ultrasound and MRI imaging, fertility-sparing staging surgery was performed, and the diagnosis of an ovarian yolk sac tumor with positive malignant cells in ascites was confirmed

Management of a Primary Retroperitoneal Yolk Sac Tumor.

BACKGROUND Existing literature has detailed occurrences of retroperitoneal yolk sac tumors (YSTs) as the result of metastasis from a primary gonadal site. However, primary retroperitoneal YSTs are extremely rare, thus remaining a challenge to diagnose and treat. We present a complex case of a large primary retroperitoneal YST in a man treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man presented with a chief symptom of severe lower abdominal pain. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large, rapidly progressing neoplasm in the retroperitoneal region, ini

A Case of Primary Sinonasal Yolk Sac Tumor.

Yolk sac tumor (YST) is a rare and highly malignant germ cell tumor that is extremely rare in the nasal region. Herein, we present a case of biopsy-proven nasal YST admixed with transitional cell carcinoma in a 58-year-old woman. Complementary F-FDG PET/CT revealed the only FDG-avid mass in the right nasal cavity. This case indicates that YST could occur in the nasal region primarily, and F-FDG PET/CT is a useful tool to distinguish between primary and metastatic lesions.

Vaginal Yolk Sac Tumors: Our Experiences and Results.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal yolk sac tumors (YSTs) are rare malignant germ cell tumors largely affecting children younger than 3 years. Because of their low incidence, there is no consensus regarding diagnosis and treatment. In this article, we describe the presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of 16 patients with vaginal YSTs diagnosed and managed at our center. METHODS: Diagnoses of YST of the vagina were confirmed by 2 experienced pathologists. All patients were treated with bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (PEB) combination chemotherapy alone. Complete remission (CR) was defined by a

Acute abdomen secondary to rare yolk sac tumour.

A 36-year-old woman presented unwell, with abdominal pain. A pelvic mass was found and being investigated but when she deteriorated and became peritonitic. An emergency laparotomy was performed and she required a pelvic clearance for a Stage IIB ovarian tumour, later confirmed as a yolk sac tumour. Accurate staging and tumour-reductive surgery strongly affects the prognosis of yolk sac tumours. Thus ability to perform a meticulous surgical clearance may well positively impact on the outcome for these young patients. This case describes the challenges that generalists will be faced with when hi

Primary orbital endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor).

Endodermal sinus tumor, or yolk sac tumor, is the most common malignant neoplasm of germ cell origin and usually occurs in infant testes or ovaries. On rare occasions, the tumor may arise from extragonadal sites, including sacrococcygeal region, uterus, vagina, prostate, retroperitoneum, liver, mediastinum, pineal gland, and third ventricle. The orbit is an unusual location for the primary development of this neoplasm. We report the case of a girl with primary orbital endodermal sinus tumor who was managed with exenteration and chemotherapy with the result of a disease-free survival of 9 years

Placental yolk sac tumor with divergent endodermal differentiation.

We report an intraplacental germ cell tumor that was an incidental finding in the placenta of a 34-year-old woman. On pathologic examination, the 4.0-cm tumor was well circumscribed with a thin fibrous capsule. It exhibited three major histologic patterns within a mesenchyme-like myxoid background: a primitive endodermal component, a well-differentiated enteric glandular endodermal component, and a component of fetal hepatic tissue. The primitive endodermal component, the hepatic component, and many parts of the enteric endodermal glandular component were immunoreactive for alpha-fetoprotein.
