HEALTH STATUS OF REINTRODUCED WOOD BISON ( BISON BISON ATHABASCAE): ASSESSING THE CONSERVATION VALUE OF AN ISOLATED POPULATION IN NORTHWESTERN CANADA.

A central goal for reintroduced populations of threatened wood bison ( Bison bison athabascae) is to maintain them free of diseases of concern, particularly bovine tuberculosis (caused by Mycobacterium bovis) and brucellosis (caused by Brucella abortus). A wood bison population in southwestern Yukon, Canada was reintroduced into the wild in 1988, but no health assessment has been done since then. To provide an initial assessment of the health status and, hence, the conservation value of this population, we serologically tested 31 wood bison (approximately 3% of the population) for pathogens of

Rabies in Western Canada 1978-1984.

The results of laboratory examination of 22,503 specimens for the diagnosis of rabies by the standard fluorescent antibody and mouse inoculation tests over a seven year period are presented. Specimens were received from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Of the 1,445 positive cases, 10.50% involved human contact. The main reservoirs of rabies were skunks, bats and foxes. The reliability of the fluorescent antibody test for the diagnosis of rabies was reaffirmed by agreement with the mouse inoculation test in over 99% of cases.

Rabies diagnosis in western Canada, 1985-1989.

The results of laboratory examination of 20460 specimens for the diagnosis of rabies by the standard fluorescent antibody and mouse inoculation tests over a five year period are presented. Specimens were received from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Of those examined, 9.96% were positive. The main reservoirs of rabies were skunks, bats, and foxes. During this observation period a rabies epizootic occurred in skunks in Saskatchewan. When both tests were performed, the fluorescent antibody test was found to agree with the mouse inoculat

Development and validation of an automated emergency department-based syndromic surveillance system to enhance public health surveillance in Yukon: a lower-resourced and remote setting.

BACKGROUND: Automated Emergency Department syndromic surveillance systems (ED-SyS) are useful tools in routine surveillance activities and during mass gathering events to rapidly detect public health threats. To improve the existing surveillance infrastructure in a lower-resourced rural/remote setting and enhance monitoring during an upcoming mass gathering event, an automated low-cost and low-resources ED-SyS was developed and validated in Yukon, Canada. METHODS: Syndromes of interest were identified in consultation with the local public health authorities. For each syndrome, case definition

Cadmium, mercury and selenium concentrations in mink (Mustela vison) from Yukon, Canada.

Mercury (total and methyl), cadmium and selenium concentrations were measured in liver, kidney and brain tissue from mink trapped from the Yukon Territory from 2001-2002. None of these metals was found at levels of toxicological concern. Total mercury averaged 0.66, 0.92 and 0.22 microg g-1 in mink kidney, liver and brain tissue respectively, while methyl mercury averaged 0.77, 0.85 and 0.21 microg g-1 in the same tissues. Selenium averaged 2.07, 1.40 and 0.39 microg g-1 in mink kidney, liver and brain tissue, while cadmium was only measured in kidneys and averaged 0.22 microg g-1. All element

Waterborne Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in the Yukon, Canada.

Several outbreaks of waterborne giardiasis have occurred in southern Canada, but nothing has been reported from the Canadian North. The objective of this study was to collect information relevant to waterborne giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis in the Yukon including epidemiological data and analyses of water, sewage, and animal fecal samples. Remote, pristine water samples were found to be contaminated with Giardia cysts (7 of 22 or 32%) but not with Cryptosporidium oocysts. Giardia cysts were found in 21% (13 of 61) of animal scats, but no Cryptosporidium oocysts were observed (small sample si

Laboratory diagnosis of rabies in western Canada (1968--1977).

The results of laboratory examination of 18,086 specimens for the presence of rabies antigen by the fluorescent antibody and mouse inoculation tests over a ten year period are presented. The submissions were received from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Of those examined, 10.74% were positive: however, the incidence of rabies varied widely in the specimens and species submitted, depending on their origin. The principal wildlife reservoirs of the disease appear to be skunks, foxes and bats. A correlation of almost 99% was obtained between the fl

Prehospital ultrasound use among Canadian aeromedical service providers - A cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that prehospital point of care ultrasound (POCUS) may change patient management. It serves as an aid in triage, physical examination, diagnosis, and patient disposition. The rate of adoption of POCUS among aeromedical services throughout Canada is unknown. The objective of this study was to describe current POCUS use among Canadian aeromedical services providers. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional observational study. A survey was emailed to directors of government-funded aeromedical services bases in Canada. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Two New Species of Staphylocystoides Yamaguti, 1959 (Cyclophyllidea: Hymenolepididae) from the Masked Shrew Sorex cinereus in North America.

Two new species of Staphylocystoides are described from masked shrews Sorex cinereus. Staphylocystoides oligospinosus n. sp. was collected from the vicinity of Missoula, Montana, United States, and Staphylocystoides parasphenomorphus n. sp. was collected from the vicinity of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. Morphological differentiation from known species is provided. Both species are morphologically closest to Staphylocystoides sphenomorphus and to each other. Among other characters, S. oligospinosus n. sp. can be easily differentiated from all known species of the genus by unique cirrus

High prevalence, intensity, and genetic diversity of Trichinella spp. in wolverine (Gulo gulo) from Yukon, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Species of Trichinella are globally important foodborne parasites infecting a number of domestic and wild vertebrates, including humans. Free-ranging carnivores can act as sentinel species for detection of Trichinella spp. Knowledge of the epidemiology of these parasites may help prevent Trichinella spp. infections in northern Canadian animals and people. Previous research on Trichinella spp. in wildlife from Yukon did not identify risk factors associated with infection, or the diversity and identity of species of Trichinella in regional circulation, based on geographically extensi

Spatial variability of gastroschisis in Canada, 2006-2011: An exploratory analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Gastroschisis is a serious birth defect of the abdominal wall that is associated with mortality and significant morbidity. Our understanding of the factors causing this defect is limited. The objective of this paper is to describe the geographic variation in incidence of gastroschisis and characterize the spatial pattern of all gastroschisis cases in Canada between 2006 and 2011. Specifically, we aimed to ascertain the differences in spatial patterns between geographic regions and identify significant clusters and their location. METHODS: The study population included 641 gastrosc

Gonorrhea in Canada, 2010-2015.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada after chlamydia, and rates for this STI have been increasing since 1997. OBJECTIVE: To summarize trends observed in gonorrhea rates for 2010-2015 in Canada. METHODS: Laboratory-confirmed cases of gonorrhea are reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) by all of the Canadian provinces and territories. The overall national rate was computed, as were rates per sex, age group and province/territory. RESULTS: In 2015, 19,845 cases of gonorrhea were reported in Canada, correspondi

A Canadian national study of provincial and territorial correctional workers' suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts.

Correctional workers (CWs) endure several operational stressors (e.g., exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events) and organisational stressors (e.g., shift work, staff shortages), which are associated with positive screens for mental disorders and self-reports of suicidal behaviours and thus urgently warrant further inquiry. The Canadian Provincial and Territorial Correctional Worker Mental Health and Well-Being Study (CWMH) used an online survey to collect data from Canadian correctional service organisations across all 13 provinces and territories. This national Canadian stud

Natural Selection and Origin of a Melanistic Allele in North American Gray Wolves.

Pigmentation is often used to understand how natural selection affects genetic variation in wild populations since it can have a simple genetic basis, and can affect a variety of fitness-related traits (e.g., camouflage, thermoregulation, and sexual display). In gray wolves, the K locus, a β-defensin gene, causes black coat color via a dominantly inherited KB allele. The allele is derived from dog-wolf hybridization and is at high frequency in North American wolf populations. We designed a DNA capture array to probe the geographic origin, age, and number of introgression events of the KB allel

Trajectories of women's homelessness in Canada's 3 northern territories.

BACKGROUND: Repairing the Holes in the Net was a 2-year, multilevel action research project designed to inform the development of culturally appropriate and gender-specific services for northern women who are homeless or marginally housed and who face mental health and substance use concerns. The study was designed to learn about the barriers and supports experienced by homeless women in the North when accessing mental health care, shelter, housing and other services; and to inform the work of northern service providers and policy advocates in a position to implement adjustments in their praxi

Variability in instructions for performance of nasopharyngeal swabs across Canada in the era of COVID-19 - what type of swab is actually being performed?

BACKGROUND: The primary method of surveillance for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 is with nasopharyngeal swabs. Given the significant demand for nasopharyngeal swabs, a large number of previously untrained and unfamiliar staff are now performing this test. It was noted that there was significant heterogeneity in instructions for performing nasopharyngeal swabs in Canada, in contrast to the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The objective of this study was to review the instructions provided across Canada and c

Gastric Cancer in Northern Canadian Populations: A Focus on Cardia and Non-Cardia Subsites.

In northern Canada where there is a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection, there is a paucity of information on gastric cancer by the topographical subsites cardia (CGC) and non-cardia (NCGC). Here we describe the incidence of CGC and NCGC, separately, among northern Canadian populations. We used data from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Volumes X (CI5X) and XI (CI5XI) to obtain CGC and NCGC incidence for Canada and for Yukon (YT), a northern Canadian territory. Using these data with those provided by the Government of the Northwest Territories (NT), we estimated standardize

Antibiotic treatment of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in domestic sheep (Ovis aries): Working at the livestock-wildlife interface in Yukon, Canada.

Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can carry the bacterium Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M. ovipneumoniae) in their upper respiratory tract, often with little effect on health and productivity. However, for bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) populations, there is a link between M. ovipneumoniae infection and pneumonia, poor lamb recruitment, and high fatality rate. Because of these outcomes, preventing transmission of M. ovipneumoniae to free-ranging wild sheep has garnered interest from both the livestock and wildlife sectors. We hypothesized that treatment with intranasal and systemic enrofloxacin would r
