Silver-coated Zea mays L. nanocatalyst for efficient Azo dye photodegradation and antimicrobial applications.

The increasing environmental issues and anticipated energy crisis highlight the urgent need for a cost-effective and efficient photocatalyst that responds to UV light for contaminant degradation. This work presents a novel approach to synthesizing Zea mays L.-loaded silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O) by chemically depositing a thin coating of Ag2O NPs onto the surface of Zea mays L. with two ratios (e.g., 5 & 10%) to form novel cost-effective core-shell Ag₂O/Z nanostructures. To assess morphology, and elemental composition, the synthesized composite was examined using high-resolution transmissi

Red light-induced inhibition of maize (Zea mays) mesocotyl elongation: evaluation of apoplastic metabolites.

Light is a crucial factor affecting plant growth and development. Besides providing the energy for photosynthesis, light serves as a sensory cue to control the adaptation of plants to environmental changes. We used the etiolated maize (Zea mays ) seedlings as a model system to study the red light-regulated growth. Exposure of the maize seedlings to red light resulted in growth inhibition of mesocotyls. We demonstrate for the first time (to the best our knowledge) that red light affected the patterns of apoplastic fluid (AF) metabolites extracted from the mesocotyl segments. By means of the unt

Sensitivity of Zea mays and Soil Microorganisms to the Toxic Effect of Chromium (VI).

Chromium is used in many settings, and hence, it can easily enter the natural environment. It exists in several oxidation states. In soil, depending on its oxidation-reduction potential, it can occur in bivalent, trivalent or hexavalent forms. Hexavalent chromium compounds are cancerogenic to humans. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Cr(VI) on the structure of bacteria and fungi in soil, to find out how this effect is modified by humic acids and to determine the response of Zea mays to this form of chromium. A pot experiment was conducted to answer the above questions. Zea m

Multinutrient Biofortification of Maize (Zea mays L.) in Africa: Current Status, Opportunities and Limitations.

Macro and micronutrient deficiencies pose serious health challenges globally, with the largest impact in developing regions such as subSaharan Africa (SSA), Latin America and South Asia. Maize is a good source of calories but contains low concentrations of essential nutrients. Major limiting nutrients in maize-based diets are essential amino acids such as lysine and tryptophan, and micronutrients such as vitamin A, zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Responding to these challenges, separate maize biofortification programs have been designed worldwide, resulting in several cultivars with high levels of pr

Hydrogen sulfide enhances nitric oxide-induced tolerance of hypoxia in maize (Zea mays L.).

Our data present H 2 S in a new role, serving as a multi-faceted transducer to different response mechanisms during NO-induced acquisition of tolerance to flooding-induced hypoxia in maize seedling roots. Nitric oxide (NO), serving as a secondary messenger, modulates physiological processes in plants. Recently, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been demonstrated to have similar signaling functions. This study focused on the effects of treatment with H2S on NO-induced hypoxia tolerance in maize seedlings. The results showed that treatment with the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) enhanced survival

High resolution microscopy to evaluate the efficiency of surface sterilization of Zea Mays seeds.

Surface sterilization of seeds is a key step in providing microorganisms-free seeds for numerous applications like understanding the role of seed-borne microorganisms in plant development, studying microbial cells-plant interactions by inoculating model microorganisms in a simplified system or selective cultivation of seed endobionts. However applying efficient treatment for surface sterilization of seeds without affecting the plant growth is not an easy task. In this study we aimed to provide an efficient surface sterilization treatment for maize seeds using i) hydrogen peroxide (HP), ii) sod

Glutamine synthetase activity in leaves of Zea mays L. as influenced by magnesium status.

The total capacity of the GS-mediated ligation of free ammonium and glutamate to form glutamine in the leaves of maize plants is not impaired upon severe magnesium starvation. Magnesium deficiency does not obligatorily lead to the decreased total protein concentrations in the leaves. Magnesium (Mg) is an integral component of the enzyme glutamine synthetase (GS), having both a structural and a catalytic role. Moreover, Mg is relevant for the post-translational regulation of the GS. Glutamine synthetase is one of the key enzymes in nitrogen assimilation, ligating-free ammonium (NH4 (+)) to glut

Spatial-Temporal Variation in Anthocyanidins in Novel Purple Corn (Zea mays L., cv Jizi-01).

Purple corn is an anthocyanidin-rich plant, with anthocyanidins being particularly abundant in the waste it produces. This study explored the variation in anthocyanidins in each part of the plant during the growth period of a novel type of purple corn (Zea mays L., cv Jizi-01). The results showed that vacuum freeze-drying had advantages over cabinet drying in protecting anthocyanidins, except in the cornsilk part. The anthocyanidin contents of the different plant parts varied with time. Purple corn cob anthocyanidins (PCCAs) were isolated and identified owing to their abundance (14.95 g/kg, dr

Streptomyces rhizobacteria enhance growth and drought tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) under greenhouse conditions.

Drought is among the most severe limitations to crop productivity, impairing plant development. Although plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been reported to alleviate drought stress in several crops, little is known about how Streptomyces affect vegetative growth of maize under water deficit. This study investigated rhizospheric Streptomyces isolates as sustainable tools to mitigate drought-related constraints in maize. Isolates CLV16, CLV100, CLV115, and CLV179 were screened under PEG6000-induced water stress (-0.6, -1.0, and - 1.7 MPa, representing mild, moderate, and severe water def

Electrical stimulation boosts seed germination, seedling growth, and thermotolerance improvement in maize (Zea mays L.).

Electrical signaling, similar to chemical signalings such as calcium (Ca2+), reactive oxygen species (ROS, mainly hydrogen peroxide: H2O2), nitric oxide (NO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), regulates many physiological processes. However, the effect of electrical stimulation on seed germination, seedling growth, and thermotolerance improvement in maize was little known. In this study, using maize as materials, the effect of electrical stimulation on seed germination, seedling growth, and thermotolerance improvement in maize was explored. The results suggested that electrical stimulation with opti

Effect of Microbial inoculation in combating the aluminium toxicity effect on growth of Zea mays.

The present study is aimed at improving the aluminium tolerance in maize crop employing the potential of microbial inoculants in conferring resistance to these toxicities via production of certain chelating compounds like siderophores, exopolysachharides and organic acids. Acid soils have now-a-days become one of the key factors for limiting growth of many agriculturally important crops. Aluminium  is one of the major elements present in acid soils and is mainly responsible for toxicity in the soil. This aluminium is rapidly soluble in soil water and hence absorbed by plant roots under conditi

Photosynthetic capacity, nutrient status, and growth of maize (Zea mays L.) upon MgSO4 leaf-application.

The major plant nutrient magnesium (Mg) is involved in numerous physiological processes and its deficiency can severely reduce the yield and quality of crops. Since Mg availability in soil and uptake into the plant is often limited by unfavorable soil or climatic conditions, application of Mg onto leaves, the site with highest physiological Mg demand, might be a reasonable alternative fertilization strategy. This study aimed to investigate, if MgSO4 leaf-application in practically relevant amounts can efficiently alleviate the effects of Mg starvation in maize, namely reduced photosynthesis ca
