Introduction Zenker diverticulum (ZD) usually affects adults after the 7 th decade of life. Treatment for ZD is indicated for all symptomatic patients, but some patients prefer to defer surgical treatment until symptoms get worse and decrease their quality of life. Objective To evaluate the association of the preoperative symptoms in ZD patients with the size of the ZD. Methods A retrospective study design. Electronic medical records were used to identify patients diagnosed with ZD and treated over 11 years. Data collection included the chief complaints and symptoms, medical history, and fi

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired hypopharyngeal outpouching resulting from upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction. Patients usually present with dysphagia, regurgitation, aspiration, or chronic cough, and the condition predominantly affects elderly individuals. Traditionally, open surgical approaches were considered the standard of care but have been associated with significant morbidity. Over the past two decades, endoscopic techniques have revolutionized the management of ZD. The basic principle of all endoscopic treatment approaches is cricopharyngeal myotomy, which relieves the fu

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an uncommon disorder that can cause dysphagia with risk of aspiration. While surgical treatment has been the mainstay for many years, endoscopic diverticulotomy has emerged as a first-line option with favorable outcomes. We present the case of a 93-year-old woman with no significant past medical history who was diagnosed with a 6 cm ZD. Due to dysphagia, she experienced significant weight loss and was at risk of malnutrition. She developed aspiration pneumonia and required admission to our center. Given her condition and inability to swallow, a nasogastric tube wa

The authors report a case of Zenker's diverticulum in a patient 72 years old who underwent surgery. The pharyngoesophageal function was investigated before and after cricopharyngeal myotomy and diverticulopexy, with oesophageal manometry. Preoperative manometry showed an incomplete relaxation of the upper oesophageal sphincter and increased of pharyngeal pressure. This diverticulum has a pulsion pathogenesis and in this case is not associated with gastroesophageal reflux. It is important to check whether an associated oesophageal pathology exist once Zenker's diverticulum has been diagnosed: X

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of open surgical techniques in the treatment of Zenker diverticulum.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review.
SETTING: Academic tertiary referral center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients with Zenker diverticulum were treated using a transcervical approach. Three with a Brombart I diverticulum underwent a simple myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. Myotomy was combined with a diverticulum inversion in 14 patients and myotomy with diverticulectomy was performed in 37 patients. The surgical procedures were compared wit

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cricopharyngeus muscle dysfunction (CPMD) with and without diverticula (e.g., Zenker Diverticulum) often struggle with dysphagia for years prior to diagnosis or intervention. Surgical treatment is successful; yet, there is limited long-term data on dysphagia outcomes after surgery.
METHODS: Individuals prospectively enrolled in the Prospective Outcomes of Cricopharyngeal Hypertonicity (POuCH) collaborative with and without diverticula who underwent surgery from November 2014 to August 2024 and had at least 12 months of follow-up were included. Eating Assessment Tool 1

A Zenker's or pharyngoesophageal diverticulum may represent a rare cause of upper digestive obstruction, or more often, cervical dysphagia, regurgitations and cough. It develops most often on the posterior left side of cervical oesophagus in elderly patients, and depending on the severity of clinical symptoms may warrant surgical or endoscopic treatment. For large lesions with a difficult endoscopic access to the diverticular neck, surgery is recommended. In our case, we illustrate a giant right-sided Zenker's diverticulum responsible for complete aphagia in a 78-year-old male patient. Open su

BACKGROUND: Zenker diverticulum (ZD) is a pseudodiverticulum and usually affects males in the 6th-9th decade of life, symptoms include dysphagia, regurgitation, chronic cough, aspiration, halitosis and weight loss. Surgery has been the mainstay treatment of symptomatic ZD and can be divided into external and intraluminal (endoscopic) techniques.
METHODS: Charts of all patients who had endoscopic correction of ZD in a tertiary referral center in the last 5 years were retrieved.
RESULTS: Twenty patients, 90% were male, with ZD were reviewed with mean age of 68 +/- 9.5 years. The pre-operative

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with Zenker diverticulum are more likely to have stasis of secretions in the left piriform sinus, on in-office endoscopy, than patients with nonspecific dysphagia.
STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study.
SETTING: A subspecialty swallowing clinic.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All patients with radiographically confirmed Zenker diverticulum who were evaluated over a 5-year period were selected. A control group with dysphagia due to radiographically confirmed esophageal dysmotility, prominent cricopharyngeal bar, or stricture was identified. Two blinded laryngolog

Esophageal injury is a rare but serious complication occurring after anterior cervical spine surgery. Pharyngoesophageal, or Zenker, diverticulum is an acquired outpouching of the pharyngeal musculature just proximal to a functional esophageal stricture, clinically manifesting as dysphagia, aspiration, and weight loss. We report a case in which a patient developed a pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, accompanied by retropharyngeal abscess, first identified 2 years after a 3-level anterior cervical fusion with allograft and anterior plating. The inferior portion of the cervical plate was dislodge

A Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired hernia of the mucosa and submucosa at the pharyngoesophageal junction dorsally through Killian's triangle, considered a zone of weakness. The authors report their experience in the management of a case of a ZD with oral externalization following coughing. Surgery made by a multidisciplinary team consisted first of resection of the edematous exteriorized portion of the diverticulum. Second, endoscopic assistance helped to reduce the remaining portion of the diverticulum, and a right anterolateral cervicotomy allowed to remove it at the origin. Immedia

Zenkers diverticulum is the most common type of esophageal diverticulum with a prevalence of 0.01 to 0.11 %, usually found in middle-aged and older patients. The prevalent symptoms are dysphagia and regurgitation. Treatment is recommended in symptomatic patients and consists of myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. Both surgical and endoscopic methods are used in the treatment of Zenkers diverticulum. With technical advances, flexible endoscopy has come to the forefront in the treatment of Zenkers diverticulum, especially in older polymorbid patients. Its advantages include lower morbidity an

Zenker's diverticulum is an acquired sac-like outpouching of the mucosa and submucosa layers located dorsally at the pharyngoesophageal junction through Killian's dehiscence. It is the most common type of oesophageal diverticula with a reported prevalence ranging between 0.01 to 0.11% and typically occurs in middle-aged and elderly patients. Predominant symptoms are dysphagia and regurgitation. Treatment is recommended for symptomatic patients and considering the aetiopathogenesis of the disease demands myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. Myotomy may be pursued through either open surgical

BACKGROUND: Transection of the cricopharyngeus muscle supposedly is of crucial therapeutic importance, because of its hypothesized pathogenic role in Zenker's diverticulum (ZD). This retrospective, nonrandomized study evaluates the outcomes of surgical therapy, with reference to cricopharyngeal myotomy (CM).
STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-nine patients underwent diverticulectomy from 1985 to 1999. Group A (n = 47; men:women, 29:18; mean age +/- SD: 69 +/- 12 [range 35 to 87] years) underwent CM because of clearly discernible hypertrophic transverse fibers. In group B (n = 32; men:women, 22:10; mean ag

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of symptomatic Zenker's diverticulum is effective; however, elderly symptomatic patients may be denied surgical intervention because of perceived increased risks.
METHODS: To address this concern, we reviewed 75 patients (46 men and 29 women) found to have this condition during the past two decades.
RESULTS: Median age was 79 years (range, 75 to 91 years). Preoperative symptoms included dysphagia in 69 patients (92%), regurgitation in 61 (81%), pneumonia in 9 (12%), halitosis in 3 (4%), and weight loss in 1 (1%). Gastroesophageal reflux symptoms were noted in
