Seasonal variation and analgesic properties of different parts from Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe (Zingiberaceae) grown in Brazil.

This work describes the seasonal variation of curcumenol (1) and dihydrocurdione (2), two active terpenoids from different parts (roots, mother rhizome and rugous rhizome) of Curcuma zedoaria grown in Brazil. The analysis was carried out by high resolution gas chromatography, using external standards for determination. The results showed that both terpenoids are present in all the parts studied. However, C. zedoaria exhibited about three times more terpenoids in the mother rhizome in autumn than in other parts and seasons studied. The antinociceptive activity of the dichloromethane extracts fr

A New Species of Curcuma subgen. Ecomatae (Zingiberaceae) from Southwestern Thailand: Morphological Delimitation and Phenetic Evidence.

Curcuma subgen. Ecomatae comprises several morphologically similar taxa whose delimitation requires careful evaluation of character combinations and intraspecific variation. Botanical surveys across Southwestern Thailand revealed six geographically separated populations of an unidentified Curcuma in Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Taxonomic status was evaluated through detailed comparative morphology and complementary individual-level phenetic analyses of 42 morphological characters using Gower distances, UPGMA clustering, and principal co

Cytochemical and comparative transcriptome analyses elucidate the formation and ecological adaptation of three types of pollen coat in Zingiberaceae.

BACKGROUND: The pollen ornate surface of flowering plants has long fascinated and puzzled evolutionary biologists for their variety. Each pollen grain is contained within a pollen wall consisting of intine and exine, over which the lipoid pollen coat lies. The cytology and molecular biology of the development of the intine and exine components of the pollen wall are relatively well characterised. However, little is known about the pollen coat, which confers species specificity. We demonstrate three types of pollen coat in Zingiberaceae, a mucilage-like pollen coat and a gum-like pollen coat, a

Composition, and antimicrobial and remarkable antiprotozoal activities of the essential oil of rhizomes of Aframomum sceptrum K. Schum. (Zingiberaceae).

The essential oil from the rhizomes of Aframomum sceptrum (Zingiberaceae) was analyzed by GC/MS, and its major constituents were found to be β-pinene (12.7%), caryophyllene oxide (10.0%), and cyperene (6.0%). The oil was also evaluated for antimicrobial activities, in comparison with β-pinene, caryophyllene oxide, and the leaf essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtaceae). The A. sceptrum essential oil exhibited bacteriostatic activity against the Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and S. aureus, but not against Gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, it show

Effects of an endophytic bacterial consortium derived from Zingiberaceae on growth, yield, and curcuminoid biosynthesis in Curcuma longa L.

Endophytic bacteria, integral to the plant microbiome, possess considerable potential for improving the cultivation and sustainability of medicinal plants. These bacteria are essential for various plant functions, including growth enhancement, nutrient uptake, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. This study recovered 29 endophytic bacterial isolates from the rhizomes of five Zingiberaceae species: Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa, Kaempferia galanga, Alpinia purpurata, and Hedychium coronarium. These isolates were evaluated for plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits, including minera

Chemical composition, enantiomeric distributions of chiral monoterpenoids, and Aedes mosquito control potential of Globba schomburgkii Hook.f. (Zingiberaceae) essential oil.

Globba schomburgkii, traditionally used as a medicinal and culinary plant, has not been comprehensively investigated for its chemical composition. In this study, essential oils from samples collected in Binh Chau (BC) and Con Dao (CD), Vietnam, were analyzed by GC-MS and chiral GC-MS, and their larvicidal potential was assessed against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus following WHO guidelines. The essential oil BC was dominated by caryophyllene oxide (31.4%) and β-pinene (15.1%), whereas the essential oil (CD) represented a distinct chemotype rich in β-pinene (24.5%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (17

Himalayan orogeny and monsoon intensification explain species diversification in an endemic ginger (Hedychium: Zingiberaceae) from the Indo-Malayan Realm.

The Indo-Malayan Realm is a biogeographic realm that extends from the Indian Subcontinent to the islands of Southeast Asia (Malay Archipelago). Despite being megadiverse, evolutionary hypotheses explaining taxonomic diversity in this region have been rare. Here, we investigate the role of geoclimatic events such as Himalayan orogeny and monsoon intensification in the diversification of the ginger-lilies (Hedychium J.Koenig: Zingiberaceae). We first built a comprehensive, time-calibrated phylogeny of Hedychium with 75% taxonomic and geographic sampling. We found that Hedychium is a very young l

Morphological and Phenetic Evidence Support the Recognition of a New Limestone-Dwelling Species of Boesenbergia Kuntze (Zingiberaceae) from Northeastern Thailand.

Limestone habitats in Southeast Asia often harbour narrowly distributed plant diversity, and several limestone-associated taxa of Boesenbergia require further taxonomic documentation. Field surveys and ex situ observations of living material from Loei Province, northeastern Thailand, revealed a distinctive Boesenbergia population associated with shaded limestone microhabitats. This study evaluates this population using comparative morphology, herbarium and literature comparisons, phenetic analyses based on 25 selected morphological characters, and a preliminary conservation assessment. Genomic evidence for genetic erosion and strong population subdivision in Amomum hainanense (Zingiberaceae), an endangered island endemic plant from Hainan, China.

Amomum hainanense is an endangered understorey herb narrowly distributed in tropical montane forests of Hainan Island, China, but its evolutionary history and conservation status remain poorly understood because genomic information is scarce. Here, we used double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing to assess genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history in Amomum hainanense, and assembled complete chloroplast genomes from low-coverage whole-genome sequencing reads to clarify its phylogenetic placement. Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms revealed excepti

Chemical Constituents and Anti-Gastric Ulcer Activity of Essential Oils of Alpinia officinarum (Zingiberaceae), Cyperus rotundus (Cyperaceae), and Their Herbal Pair.

The essential oil (EO) of the herbal pair (HP), Alpinia officinarum-Cyperus rotundus (HP G-X) has been conventionally used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for 'warming the stomach' and relieving pain. However, its pharmacologically active compounds, as well as the mechanism of its anti-gastric ulcer properties remain unclear. In this study, the EOs obtained from HP G-X and its corresponding single herbs were analyzed using GC/MS. A total of 74, 56, and 85 compounds were detected in A. officinarum (GLJ), C. rotundus (XF), and HP G-X, accounting for 93.2 %, 89.5 %, and 92.0 % of the total

Oral administration of powdered dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. (turmeric, Zingiberaceae) is effective in the treatment of doxorubicin-induced kidney injury in rats.

Curcumin is a polyphenol present in the rhizomes of the species Curcuma longa L. ("turmeric," Zingiberaceae), which has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory. We aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of C. longa in renal injury induced by doxorubicin (DOX, 3.5 mg.kg-1 IV). We studied four groups of Wistar rats: two groups with DOX-induced kidney injury, one fed with standard food and another with standard food mixed with C. longa (5 mg.g-1 ). Two other control groups without kidney injury were fed with the same foods. We measured albuminuria, body weight, and food intake ev

In Silico Screening and Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Potential Anti-Malarial Agents from Zingiberaceae as Potential Plasmodium falciparum Lactate Dehydrogenase (PfLDH) Enzyme Inhibitors.

Malaria continues to be a major public health issue in a number of countries, particularly in tropical regions-the emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum encourages new drug discovery research. The key to Plasmodium falciparum survival is energy production up to 100 times greater than other parasites, primarily via the PfLDH. This study targets PfLDH with natural bioactive compounds from the Zingiberaceae family through molecular docking and molecular dynamic studies. Sulcanal, quercetin, shogosulfonic acid C, galanal A and naringenin are the Top 5 compounds with a lower binding ene

Toxicity of ar-curcumene and epi-β-bisabolol from Hedychium larsenii (Zingiberaceae) essential oil on malaria, chikungunya and St. Louis encephalitis mosquito vectors.

Mosquitoes act as vectors of key pathogens and parasites. Plant essential oils have been recognized as important sources of biopesticides, which do not induce resistance and have limited toxic effects on human health and non-target organisms. In this research, we evaluated the larvicidal and oviposition deterrence activity of Hedychium larsenii essential oil (EO) and its major compounds ar-curcumene and epi-β-bisabolol. Both molecules showed high toxicity against early third instars of Anopheles stephensi (LC50=10.45 and 14.68µg/ml), Aedes aegypti (LC50=11.24 and 15.83µg/ml) and Culex quinquef
