The variable development of the zygoma, dictating its shape and size variations among ancestral groups, has important clinical implications and valuable anthropological and evolutionary inferences. The purpose of the study was to review the literature regarding the variations in the zygoma with ancestry. Ancestral variation in the zygoma reflects genetic variations because of genetic drift as well as natural selection and epigenetic changes to adapt to diet and climate variations with possible intensification by isolation. Prominence of the zygoma, zygomaxillary tuberosity, and malar tubercle

Tubercular osteomyelitis of midfacial bones is extremely rare, although tuberculosis of long bones and the vertebral column is not uncommon. Because of the rare incidence, myriad presentation, and lack of specific symptoms, this condition presents a challenge in diagnosis and calls for acute clinical awareness. This article presents a case report of a 12-year-old girl with complaints of gradually increasing swelling lateral to and below her right eye for 4 months with pus discharge. She was treated with surgical curettage and 4-drug antitubercular therapy and responded with complete remission

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the zygomatic complex with its accompanying functional and esthetic deficits are a fairly common phenomenon in the practice of maxillofacial and plastic surgery. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review, based on collected data, on the topic of "fractured zygoma". The review is presented under the headings of epidemiology, fracture patterns, treatment modalities and complications. Throughout the paper comparison is made with published data from around the world.
METHODS: A 10-year retrospective audit was undertaken of all hospitalized patients, at the depart

Displaced fractures of the zygoma require reduction to prevent malunion. The indications for concomitant orbital floor exploration are controversial. In a retrospective review, the preoperative clinical findings, roentgenographic findings, and mode of injury in 106 patients with zygoma fractures who had their orbital floors explored was compared with surgical findings. The finding of preoperative diplopia was correlated with a surgically significant floor defect. The finding of trismus correlated with the absence of a significant defect. No other clinical or roentgenographic finding was correl

This study elaborates a brief overview of epithelial cysts in the bones of the skull and describes an unusual patient with an epidermoid cyst of the zygoma. This report focuses on an endoscopic preauricular infratemporal fossa approach for resection of a left epidermoid cyst of the zygoma. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography imaging as well as intraoperative endoscopic images and movie were demonstrated. The epithelial cyst was successfully removed from the patient using a minimally invasive approach utilizing endoscopes. No complications were encountered. The possi

Reduction malarplasty is utilized to reshape the facial form into an oval shape. However, complications and unfavorable results in reduction malarplasty have been reported. Reoperation of a nonunion malar complex is difficult relative to the achievement of a satisfactory outcome using the intraoral approach with a narrow surgical field because the normal anatomy has been destroyed, and previous surgery may have caused asymmetry. In this situation, computer-aided simulation surgery and surgical guides can serve as effective solutions to overcome the limitations of reoperative malarplasty using

BACKGROUND: Because of the various defects of malarplasty, including a large incision, much bleeding, visible scars after the operation, and so on, caused by the conventional coronal incision or the temporal incision with the intraoral incision approach, the malarplasty by simple intraoral approach is an innovative development.
METHODS: Through the intraoral approach and subperiosteal dissection, we can reach the osteotomy point on the zygomatic body directly and arrive at the osteotomy point at the zygomatic arch end along the medial side of the zygoma. A new L osteotomy is applied with the

Tubercular osteomyelitis of mid-facial bones is extremely rare because of its immense vascular supply. Due to rare incidence, myriad presentation, and lack of specific symptoms, this condition presents a challenge in diagnosis and calls for acute clinical awareness. This article presents a case report of a 31-year-old martial artist with complaints of trauma to his right malar region since one month and a gradually increasing swelling below his right eye for 3 weeks without any discharge. A diagnosis of primary Tuberculosis of right zygomatic bone was made with the help of multiple diagnostic

BACKGROUND: Malar/zygoma reduction is an effective procedure to change a broader, flatter facial appearance to an oval facial shape. Of the intraoral and coronal approaches, the intraoral is the more commonly used technique than the coronal, due to the perception that complications with the coronal approach are significant, and intraoral results are satisfactory. We compared the postoperative effects of both approaches.
METHODS: From 1994 to 1999, we included the 150 intraoral cases that were followed up for 3 years postoperatively. From 2000 to 2018, we changed our technique to the coronal a

Wilms' tumor accounts for the majority of renal tumors in children. Rarely, Wilms' tumor may metastasize to the bone. We present a case of a 15-month-old female who presented with severe abdominal distension and signs of cachexia. Abdominal ultrasonography and radiography of the abdomen both demonstrated a large abdominal mass. Follow-up computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a heterogeneous intra-abdominal mass arising from the left kidney which was surrounded by a thin rim of renal parenchyma. Biopsy of the mass revealed findings consistent with Wilms' tumor. The patient was 14 months s

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the pattern of fractured zygoma, different treatment modalities, and complications of the treatment in our center. It also aimed to determine the association between the treatment modalities and complication of treatment, and association between number of fixation and complication.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective review was conducted from January 2008 until December 2011. All patients diagnosed with zygomatic complex fractured that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. Zingg's Classification was used in the study.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Nasoorbitoethmoid fractures commonly accompany midface fractures and may be underdiagnosed, resulting in incomplete reconstruction or inadequate treatment following facial trauma. To better understand the nasoorbitoethmoid fracture diagnosis and treatment tendencies, the authors analyzed concomitant nasoorbitoethmoid injuries in the setting of zygoma fractures.
METHODS: The facial trauma database at a level I trauma center was evaluated. All patients with diagnosed zygoma fractures from June of 2011 to March of 2016 were assessed for a concomitant nasoorbitoethmoid injury. Documen

OBJECTIVE: When fractured, zygomas rotate and dislocate. The present study quantitatively elucidates the pattern of the rotation.
METHODS: 50 patients with tri-pod-type zygoma fractures were involved in this study. After defining a 3-dimensional coordinate system--consisting of the M-L axis (the axis directed from the medial to lateral side of the skull), I-S axis (directed from the inferior to superior side), and P-A axis (directed from the posterior to anterior side), the degree with which the fractured zygomas rotated around each of these axes was measured using 3-dimensional graphic softw

Fibrous dysplasia is a nonneoplastic, developmental disease of the bone that begins in childhood with obscure etiology. Clinically, it is presented as a continuously growing, painless mass at late childhood. Maxilla and mandible are mostly involved in facial skeleton. Involvement of the zygomatic bone is rare. Fibrous dysplasia of the zygomatic bone may cause orbital dystopia, diplopia, proptosis, loss of visual acuity, swelling, mass formation, or facial asymmetry. We present 1 case of fibrous dysplasia with isolated zygomatic bone involvement.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all osseous tumors. The most frequent sites are the calvaria and the vertebral column. Involvement of the facial bones is rare, and occurs most commonly in the maxilla, mandible, and nasal bones. Only 20 cases of zygomatic involvement have been reported in the English-language literature. We report a case of an intraosseous hemangioma of the zygoma documented by CT and MR studies.
