Fourteen eczema patients, 13 women and one man, were found to have contact allergy to a brown stocking dye which is a mixture of nitro- and aminodiazobenzene and aminoanthraquinone dyes. Eleven of the patients reacted to p-phenylenediamine; nine of 12 tested reacted to aminoazobenzene, nine to Disperse Orange 3 and four to Disperse Yellow 3. Positive epicutaneous test reactions to the dye were found in five of 362 consecutive eczema patients tested (1.4%).

We report here 1) the synthesis and properties of a new macromolecular carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, Prontosil-dextran, 2) its application to determine the localization of a previously described extracellular carbonic anhydrase in skeletal muscle, and 3) the application of a recently published histochemical technique using dansylsulfonamide to the same problem. Retinoic acid (RA) has been identified as a key signal involved in the posteriorization of vertebrate neural ectoderm. The main biosynthetic enzyme responsible for RA signaling in the hindbrain and spinal cord is Raldh2. For a period of 12 years, 539 patients with shoe and dye contact dermatitis, were studied in 2 out-patient clinics in Lisbon. 75% of the patients had a bilateral recurrent dermatitis confined to the dorsa of the feet. PTBP resin and chromium proved to be the 2 principal allergens, but when lesions were localized to the soles, rubber additives, chiefly mercaptobenzothiazole, were the predominant ones. The important chemotherapeutic agents, Prontosil and pentenylpenicillin (penicillin F), were investigated initially by two men, Domagk and Fleming, who had been influenced by the horrendous wound infections of World War I. The very different pathways leading to their development and to that of the successor antibacterials (sulfa drugs, further penicillins, semi-synthetic penicillins), including the role played by patents, are discussed.

METHODS: We reviewed results from patients who underwent patch testing with our standard allergen series (including 15 hairdressing chemicals) and a supplementary "hairdresser series" (18 additional hairdressing chemicals) at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN; Scottsdale, AZ; and Jacksonville, FL) from January 1, 2000, through December 31, 2008.

In this study, the usefulness was assessed of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) base as a marker for contact allergy to para-compounds and dispers … in 17/24 patients. Positive reactions to PPD correlated well with reactions to para compounds like p-aminoazobenzene and p-toluenediamine sulphate but not with disperse dyes. Reactions to Disperse Blue (106, 124) and Orange (1 and 3) were seen most frequently. PPD is a good screening agent for hair dye, but not for disperse dye, sensitivity.

Respiratory motoneuron pools must provide rhythmic inspiratory drive that is robust and reliable, yet dynamic enough to respond to respiratory challenges. One form of plasticity that is hypothesized to contribute to motor output stability by sensing and responding to inadequate respiratory neural activity is inactivity-induced phrenic motor facilitation (iPMF), an increase in inspiratory output triggered by a reduction in phrenic synaptic inputs.
