OBJECTIVE: There have been few studies of adrenarche in patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). We have therefore sought to detect the onset of adrenarche in CAH patients and to investigate whether its evolution was influenced by the severity of the disease, the age at the onset of substitution therapy, or both.

Serum concentrations of 10 hormones in 162 hirsute women were examined. INTRODUCTION: Early detection of salt-wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia (SW-CAH) is important to reduce CAH-related morbidity. However, neonatal screening has shown to have a low positive predictive value (PPV), especially among preterm newborns. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a disorder of adrenal steroid synthesis.
