The uptake of cortisol by isolated rat liver cells was studied. Cortisol was taken up rapidly; the uptake increased with increasing temperature and reached a plateau after 45 s at 37 degrees, C, after 60 s at 27 degrees C, and after 90 s at 22 degrees C; at 5 degrees C the uptake increased linearly with time. The uptake was linear up to 1.5 mg of cell protein. Rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells, decorated with IgE, have been shown to bind irreversibly to antigen-coated substrates. In this paper we measured RBL cell deformability and demonstrated that this irreversible binding is not due to a compliant cellular rheology of these cells. A metal organic framework (MOF) of the type copper(II)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Cu-BTC) was electrodeposited on electroreduced graphene oxide (ERGO) placed on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the first exon of the gene huntingtin. Holins are phage-encoded hydrophobic membrane proteins that spontaneously and non-specifically accumulate and form lesions in the cytoplasmic membrane. Effects of dietary copper deficiency in rats on respiratory enzymes of isolated rat liver mitochondria have been studied. The anti-obesity effect of the serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor sibutramine has been attributed to a dual mechanism involving a reduction of food intake and an increase in energy expenditure. This dual action increases the possibilities for induction of a negative energy balance, the principal goal of an anti-obesity treatment. To elucidate the mechanism behind sibutramine-induced increase in energy expenditure, we applied indirect calorimetry combined with monitoring locomotor activity and body temperature. We confirm that sibutramine has both anorectic and thermogenic effects.

The effects of various metabolic inhibitors on cell-surface receptors for diphtheria toxin were studied. Incubation of Vero cells at 37 degrees C with fluoride, azide, salicylate, and, to a lesser degree, with deoxyglucose resulted in an apparent loss of receptors for the toxin. With some drugs the loss was rapid (half-time approximately 8-9 min) while with others considerably longer time periods were required (half-time greater than or equal to 40 min).
