Functional Reconstruction of Abdominal Wall in Prune Belly Syndrome Using Vastus Lateralis Muscle Flaps: A Prospective Observational Study.

Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by severe abdominal wall muscle deficiency, leading to significant impairment of respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal function. Despite numerous reconstructive attempts, no technique has achieved full functional restoration of the anterior abdominal wall. This paper introduces a novel dynamic reconstructive approach using bilateral pedicled musculo-fascial Vastus Lateralis (VL) flaps for functional abdominal wall reconstruction in PBS. Unlike traditional abdominoplasty-based procedures that mainly address cosmetic def

Effect of Abdominal Weight Training on Diaphragm Thickening Fraction and Respiratory Muscle Strength in Healthy People: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Introduction Abdominal weight training (AWT) is a simple technique that applies external resistance to the diaphragm during breathing by placing weights on the abdomen. Although it is an accessible method for respiratory muscle training, its physiological effects remain unclear. This quasi-experimental study in healthy young adults evaluated the immediate and four-week effects of AWT on diaphragm thickening fraction (DTF) and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP). Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 26 healthy participants allocated to either an AWT group or a control group. The

Ras-related protein 2 limits vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic switching and abdominal aortic aneurysm development.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and the attendant catastrophic event of rupture remain a leading cause of death. Germline mutation of RRAS2 cause Noonan Syndrome, yet little is known about its function in AAA pathogenesis. Integrated analysis of RNA-seq data revealed RRAS2 a potential regulator of AAA. Its mRNA and protein levels reduced in abdominal aorta of AAA patients and AAA mice. Mice with SMCs-specific knockout of Rras2 were more vulnerable to Ang II and porcine pancreatic elastase-induced AAA, while overexpression of Rras2 in SMCs inhibited AAA progression. Maternally expressed gene 3

Comparative impact of body composition from abdominal computed tomography and paraspinal muscle degeneration on subsequent vertebral fracture risk.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are a growing public health concern, particularly as a complication of osteoporosis, and significantly increase the risk of subsequent VCFs. This study aimed to elucidate the independent contributions of body composition and paraspinal muscle degeneration to subsequent VCFs. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients diagnosed with acute VCF between 2013 and 2022 who met the following criteria: undergoing abdominal computed tomography (CT) within ±7 days of diagnosis and having a clinical follow-up of ≥1 year. These patients w

The Use of a DCIA Free Flap with Internal and External Oblique Abdominal Muscle in Compound Oral Cavity Defects: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) free flap with internal abdominal oblique muscle (IAOM) is a well-known method of reconstruction used in cases of oral cavity neoplasms. Because the IAOM can be insufficient for extensive defects after removal of advanced carcinomas of the tongue, floor of the mouth, or gingiva, the additional preparation of a perforator-supported external abdominal oblique (EAOM) muscle flap can be useful. The aim of this study was to introduce the use of a DCIA flap with an IAOM and EAOM island in the reconstruction of oral cavity compound defect

The circular RNA Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated regulates oxidative stress in smooth muscle cells in expanding abdominal aortic aneurysms.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a pathological widening of the aortic wall characterized by loss of smooth muscle cells (SMCs), extracellular matrix degradation, and local inflammation. This condition is often asymptomatic until rupture occurs, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. Diagnosis is mostly accidental and the only currently available treatment option remains surgical intervention. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a novel class of regulatory non-coding RNAs that originate from backsplicing. Their highly stable loop structure, combined with a remarkable enrichment in

Lipid phosphate phosphatase 3 in smooth muscle cells regulates angiotensin II-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm formation.

Genetic variants that regulate lipid phosphate phosphatase 3 (LPP3) expression are risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. LPP3 is dynamically upregulated in the context of vascular inflammation with particularly heightened expression in smooth muscle cells (SMC), however, the impact of LPP3 on vascular pathology is not fully understood. We investigated the role of LPP3 and lysophospholipid signaling in a well-defined model of pathologic aortic injury and observed Angiotensin II (Ang II) increases expression of PLPP3 in SMCs through nuclear factor kappa B (N

CircRNA Chordc1 protects mice from abdominal aortic aneurysm by contributing to the phenotype and growth of vascular smooth muscle cells.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have important potential in modulating vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) activity, but their roles in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are unknown. We performed in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry and determined that circChordc1 (cysteine and histidine-rich domain containing 1) was markedly downregulated in aneurysm tissue compared with normal arteries. A gene gain and loss strategy was used to confirm that circChordc1 transformed VSMCs into a contracted phenotype and improved their growth, which significantly suppressed aneurysm formation and reduced the ri

A reduction in the vascular smooth muscle cell focal adhesion component syndecan-4 is associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm formation.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious vascular disease for which there is no effective drug treatment. The incidence of AAA increases significantly as a subject ages, and the molecular mechanism of AAA formation remains elusive. In the present study, we investigated the role of syndecan-4 (SDC4), an important component of focal adhesions, in AAA formation and its association with phenotypic changes in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). METHODS AND RESULTS: The protein expression levels of SDC4 were significantly decreased in human AAA tissue and those of an AAA mouse mod

Comparison of the Abdominal Wall Muscle Thickness in Female Rugby Players Versus Non-Athletic Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Rugby players engage in demanding, high loading muscular activity in the spine. Study of the abdominal wall architecture in female rugby athletes is relevant to the possible muscular asymmetry secondary to sport practice and the relationship between the abdominal wall and the pelvic floor muscles. Activation of the transversus abdominis (TrAb) generates an increase in the bladder neck muscle. Moreover, an increased interrecti distance (IRD) is related to urinary incontinence and has a higher prevalence in athletic women. The aim of the present study was to compare an

Submaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions: similar bladder-neck elevation, longer duration, less intra-abdominal pressure.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: An adequate pelvic floor muscle contraction (PFMC) elevates the bladder neck (BN) and stabilizes it during increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). A maximal PFMC may increase the IAP and thereby prevent BN elevation. The aim of this study was to assess BN elevation during submaximal and maximal PFMC and their achievable duration. METHODS: We recruited 68 women with stress urinary incontinence and 14 vaginally nulliparous continent controls who were able to perform a PFMC on vaginal palpation. Women were upright and performed a maximal PFMC as long as possible, f

The Effect of Abdominal Muscle Activation Techniques on Trunk and Lower Limb Mechanics During the Single-Leg Squat Task in Females.

CONTEXT: Females suffer 4 to 6 times more noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries than males due to neuromuscular control deficits of the hip musculature leading to increases in hip adduction angle, knee abduction angle, and knee abduction moment during dynamic tasks such as single-leg squats. Lateral trunk displacement has been further related to ACL injury risk in females, leading to the incorporation of core strength/stability exercises in ACL preventative training programs. However, the direct mechanism relating lateral trunk displacement and lower limb ACL risk factors is not

Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 contributes to abdominal aortic aneurysms via smooth muscle cell necrosis and inflammation.

RATIONALE: Depletion of medial smooth muscle cell (SMC) is a major pathological characteristic of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), although the mechanism by which these cells are eliminated remains incompletely understood. We reasoned that necroptosis, a recently described form of necrosis mediated by receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIP3), may contribute to AAA pathology through the induction of SMC death and the significant production of inflammatory cytokines. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that RIP3-mediated necroptosis is actively involved in aneurysm pathogenesis. METHODS AND
