Cause or effect? The relationship between student perception of the medical school learning environment and academic performance on USMLE Step 1.

BACKGROUND: A school's learning environment is believed to influence academic performance yet few studies have evaluated this association controlling for prior academic ability, an important factor since students who do well in school tend to rate their school's environment more highly than students who are less academically strong. AIM: To evaluate the effect of student perception of the learning environment on their performance on a standardized licensing test while controlling for prior academic ability. METHODS: We measured perception of the learning environment after the first year of m

Influence of a past history of Gambian sleeping sickness on physical growth, sexual maturity and academic performance of children in Fontem, Cameroon.

Little has been published on the long-term complications of Gambian sleeping sickness (GSS) following treatment. A case-control study to compare physical growth, sexual maturity and academic performance of children with and without a past history of GSS was therefore conducted. The study took place over a period of 6 months, in the 10 villages of the Fontem GSS focus, which is known to be very endemic for the disease. Overall, 100 young subjects (aged 6-20 years) with a past history of GSS were pair-matched for age (+/- 5 months), sex, place of residence, and socio-economic and cultural backgr

Self-Esteem as a Mediating Mechanism in the Association Between Emotional Experiences and Academic Performance in School Students: The Moderating Role of Age.

Background: Academic performance does not depend solely on cognitive abilities, but also depends on socioemotional processes. Emotional experiences may be associated with school performance; however, their effects are often inconsistent, suggesting the need to examine mediating mechanisms such as self-esteem and developmental conditions such as age. Objective: We aimed to analyze the association between positive and negative emotional experiences and academic performance in school students, assessing the mediating role of self-esteem and the moderating effect of age. Methods: A cross-sectional

Cognitive Skills and Academic Performance in Children With Minimal to Mild Conductive Hearing Loss: The Roles of Listening Effort and Subjective Fatigue.

PURPOSE: This study examined how cognitive skills (nonverbal intelligence, verbal working memory, and attention) influence academic performance in children with minimal to mild conductive hearing loss (mCHL) and whether this relationship is moderated by subjective fatigue and listening effort. We also compared these effects with age- and sex-matched children with normal hearing sensitivity (NHS). METHOD: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted on 130 children with mCHL and 130 children with NHS (aged 10-12 years). Audiological testing, cognitive assessments (Seguin form board test

Comparison of academic performance of medical students previously and non-previously graduated from other college courses in a PBL hybrid curriculum.

BACKGROUND: The admission of graduate students (GS) into medical courses is seen as a mechanism that allows students to have better academic performance during the medical course and to become more competent professionals. For these reasons, specific programs for this purpose agree that GS may have better academic performance in medical courses than nongraduate students (NGS). This study aimed to assess whether graduate-entry students (GS) outperformed admission test (AT) and transfer (Tr) students in both the pre-clinical and clinical phases of an undergraduate medical program that adopts a h

Background Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining cognitive function, emotional well-being, and academic performance. Dental students often face unique stressors, such as demanding academic schedules, clinical responsibilities, and irregular sleep patterns, which may negatively affect their sleep quality and overall health. In the Indian context, limited research has explored how sleep-related issues impact both the academic and clinical performance of dental students. This study aimed to assess sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, sleep deprivation, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL),

The impact of learning motivation on academic performance among low-income college students: the mediating roles of learning strategies and mental health.

Financial hardship can hinder university achievement, yet the mechanisms linking motivation to performance among low-income undergraduates remain underexplored. This two-wave study tracked 316 students from three public universities in eastern China over a six-month period. Measures included intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation, learning strategies, perceived stress, and grade point average (GPA). Structural equation modeling revealed that the proposed model explained over 64% of the variance in GPA. Intrinsic motivation was positively associated with GPA both directly and indirectly through
