Alpine travel. Mountain sickness, the unwelcome companion.

A personal observation and two cases from the literature are described to draw attention to the dangers of mountain sickness and to the rapid progression from the milder form, termed acute mountain sickness, to the more serious conditions of high-altitude pulmonary or cerebral oedema and their possible fatal outcome. The pathogenesis and treatment of the disorders are briefly reviewed. It is stressed that there are no substitutes for acclimatization through gradual ascent and that the best treatment is to descend to a lower altitude.

Retinal haemorrhage in Himalayan mountaineers.

The fundi of 14 climbers were monitored on ascent to 6000 metres over a 15 day period in the Nepal Himalaya. A total of 4 climbers experienced symptomless haemorrhages. These haemorrhages were not secondary to changes in haemoglobin concentration, nor did they appear correlated to the use of acetazolamide. The risk of developing retinal haemorrhage was, however, significantly greater in the better acclimatized individuals. Possible reasons for this relationship are discussed.

Orchid Micropropagation Using Temporary Immersion Systems: A Review.

Temporary immersion systems (TIS) have been used for orchid micropropagation. The main advantage of TIS use for micropropagation is that the explant is periodically immersed in nutrient media, and then, the nutrient solution is drained, which allows the explant tissue to stay in air. The current review resumes the application of TIS in orchid propagation. Fifty-three papers are discussed considering: explant, culture media, TIS bioreactor type, frequency and immersion time, and the TIS effects in acclimatization phase.

Heat intolerance as a function of percent of body surface involved with miliaria rubra.

Twenty-four heat-acclimatized male volunteers were wrapped as previously described (Am. J. Physiol. 239 (Regulatory Integrative Comp. Physiol. 8): R226-R232, 1980) but to produce miliaria rubra (heat rash) in specific regions of the body. Three experimental rash groups were involved: 1) the torso (17% total skin surface rashed, n = 6), 2) torso and arms (38%, n = 8), or 3) legs (41%, n = 6), while four subjects served as controls. All subjects were reexposed to walking in the heat on the 7th day after unwrapping, and again 14, 21, and 28 days after unwrapping. When compared to responses for th

Fulminant high altitude blindness.

Prolonged altitude exposure even with acclimatization continues to present a physiological challenge to all organ systems including the central nervous system. We describe a case of a 41-year-old Caucasian female climber who suffered severe visual loss that was due to possible optic nerve pathology occurring during a high altitude expedition in the Himalayas. This case is atypical of classic high altitude cerebral oedema and highlights yet another danger of prolonged sojourn at extreme altitudes.

Hypoxia-Induced Gut-Brain Axis Remodeling and Insomnia: Mechanisms and Microbiota Adaptive Regulation from a Translational Perspective.

High-altitude hypoxia frequently disrupts sleep-wake cycles, causing insomnia that impairs acclimatization, performance, and health. Emerging evidence implicates the gut-brain axis (GBA) in this disorder. Prolonged or severe hypoxia can disturb intestinal epithelial homeostasis through oxidative, inflammatory, and metabolic changes, increasing barrier permeability and facilitating the translocation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and other bacterial products into the circulation. Concurrent gut microbial dysbiosis reduces the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and redirects tryptophan m

Heat-Related Illnesses.

Heat-related illnesses comprise a spectrum of syndromes resulting from disruption of thermoregulation in people exposed to high environmental heat. Symptoms range from heat edema and exercise-associated muscle cramps to exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke. Athletes, outdoor laborers, and military personnel are at greatest risk. Several intrinsic and extrinsic factors increase the risk of heat-related illness, including medical conditions, environmental factors, medication use, and inadequate acclimatization. Proper recognition and treatment are effec

Role of cerebrospinal fluid [H+] in ventilatory deacclimatization from chronic hypoxia.

Once ventilatory acclimatization begins in sea level residents sojourning at high altitude, abrupt restoration of normal oxygen tensions will not restore ventilation to normal. We have investigated the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) [H(+)] in this sustained hyperventilation by measuring CSF acid-base status in seven men (lumbar) and five ponies (cisternal) in normoxia, first at sea level and then periodically over 13-24 h of "deacclimatization" after 3-5 d in hypoxia (P(B) = 440 mm Hg). After 1 h deacclimatization, hyperventilation continued at a level only slightly less than that obtained

In Vitro Multiplication of Agave (A. marmorata and A. potatorum) by Temporary Immersion in SETIS™ Bioreactor.

In Mexico, wild agaves are important for the production of alcoholic beverages known as mezcal and pulque. However, the propagation of agave seeds and pups is not enough to satisfy the national demand. Temporary immersion systems represent an agave micropropagation alternative that reduces the labor force, increases development, and improves the quality of seedlings. The use of the SETIS™ bioreactor in A. marmorata and A. potatorum improves the multiplication rate and allows rooting. Additionally, this bioreactor reduces the culture time, labor force, and reagents needed while maintaining high

Light signals generated by vegetation shade facilitate acclimation to low light in shade-avoider plants.

When growing in search for light, plants can experience continuous or occasional shading by other plants. Plant proximity causes a decrease in the ratio of R to far-red light (low R:FR) due to the preferential absorbance of R light and reflection of FR light by photosynthetic tissues of neighboring plants. This signal is often perceived before actual shading causes a reduction in photosynthetically active radiation (low PAR). Here, we investigated how several Brassicaceae species from different habitats respond to low R:FR and low PAR in terms of elongation, photosynthesis, and photoacclimatio

Chronic light reduction reduces overall resilience to additional shading stress in the seagrass Halophila ovalis.

Seagrasses have substantial capacity to survive long periods of light reduction, but how acclimation to chronic low light environments may influence their ability to cope with additional stress is poorly understood. This study examines the effect of temporal light reduction by adding two levels of shading to Halophila ovalis plants in two meadows with different light histories, one characterized by a low light (turbid) environment and the other by a relatively high light (clear) environment. Additional shading resulted in complete mortality for both shading treatments at the turbid site while

Seasonal impact on the thermal tolerance window of a keystone coastal grazer, the common periwinkle Littorina littorea.

Temperature influences the performance of marine ectotherms, and understanding species' thermal responses is key to predicting climate change impacts. This study investigated seasonal acclimatization effects on the thermal tolerance of the common periwinkle Littorina littorea. Snails were collected in winter and summer on the North Sea Island of Helgoland and exposed to gradually increasing temperatures (1.5 °C/h from the sampling temperature, 10-16 °C to 34 °C). Behavioral responses (antenna extension and movement onset) were assessed at target temperatures (10/16, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C),

Heat-Related Illnesses.

Heat-related illnesses encompass a spectrum of disorders resulting from exposure to high temperatures and the body's inability to efficiently dissipate heat. These syndromes range from mild illnesses, such as heat edema, heat rash, and heat cramps, to more concerning manifestations such as exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and exertional rhabdomyolysis. The most severe and potentially life-threatening heat-related illnesses include exercise collapse associated with sickle cell trait, severe exercise-associated hyponatremia, and heat stroke. Common risk factors of heat-related illn

Strawberry micropropagation simplifies endomicrobiome and highlights potential for in vitro biotization with beneficial rhizobacteria.

Strawberry micropropagation produces uniform, disease-free planting material. However, repeated in vitro subculturing can simplify the endophytic microbiome, reducing plant vigour and acclimatization success. This study investigated the impact of successive in vitro generations on the endomicrobiome of Fragaria × ananassa cv. San Andreas and determined if targeted biotization with beneficial rhizobacteria can enhance plant performance. Profiled endophytic bacterial and fungal communities were analysed in the mother plant and across three in vitro generations using amplicon sequencing of the 16

Cognition and Neuropsychological Changes at Altitude-A Systematic Review of Literature.

High-altitude (HA) exposure affects cognitive functions, but studies have found inconsistent results. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of HA exposure on cognitive functions in healthy subjects. A structural overview of the applied neuropsychological tests was provided with a classification of superordinate cognitive domains. A literature search was performed using PubMed up to October 2021 according to PRISMA guidelines. Eligibility criteria included a healthy human cohort exposed to altitude in the field (at minimum 2440 m [8000 ft]) or in a hypoxic environment in

Heat Adaptation in Military Personnel: Mitigating Risk, Maximizing Performance.

The study of heat adaptation in military personnel offers generalizable insights into a variety of sporting, recreational and occupational populations. Conversely, certain characteristics of military employment have few parallels in civilian life, such as the imperative to achieve mission objectives during deployed operations, the opportunity to undergo training and selection for elite units or the requirement to fulfill essential duties under prolonged thermal stress. In such settings, achieving peak individual performance can be critical to organizational success. Short-notice deployment to

Ventilatory responses to hypercapnia and hypoxia after 6 h passive hyperventilation in humans.

1. Acute exposure to hypoxia stimulates ventilation and induces hypocapnia. Long-term exposure to hypoxia generates changes in respiratory control known as ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia. The object of this study was to investigate the degree to which the hyperventilation and hypocapnia can induce the changes known as ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia, in the absence of the primary hypoxic stimulus itself. 2. Three 6 h protocols were each performed on twelve healthy volunteers: (1) passive hypocapnic hyperventilation, with end-tidal CO2 pressure (PET,CO2) held 10 Torr below the eu

Propagation of Polygonatum macranthum (Maxim.) Koidz. from immature seeds using a new sterilization procedure.

Natural seed germination is difficult to achieve in numerous plant species of wide economic importance. The germination of Polygonatum macranthum seeds takes as long as one and a half years under natural conditions. In addition, propagation by rhizome is also extremely slow in this species. Therefore, the natural propagation of P. macranthum through seeds or rhizome is not efficient. In this study, an efficient in vitro propagation system for P. macranthum from immature seeds with seed coat was developed, using a new surface sterilization protocol that utilized a low concentration of hypochlor

Skeletal muscle resting metabolism in cold-acclimated rats: effect of age, noradrenaline and hyperosmolarity.

1. A myothermic technique has been used to measure the resting metabolism of small bundles of a fast twitch muscle, extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and a slow twitch muscle, soleus (SOL), in 7-week-old rats. At 27 degrees C, mean (+/-SEM) resting heat rates were 2.33 +/- 0.41 and 2.09 +/- 0.37 mW/g in EDL and SOL, respectively (n = 16). 2. Seven-week-old rats were cold acclimatized at 4 degrees C for 1-4 weeks and the metabolic rates of the fast and slow twitch muscles were monitored and compared with 7- and 11-week-old controls. There was a 160% increase in metabolic rate from week 7 to week
